SF's Outside Lands Festival Proves The '90s Are Alive And Well

Travel we know, but time travel? The lineup of this weekend's Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival looks like it could have been lifted from the grunge rock and jam band days of yesteryear. If you're nostalgic for the early '90s, buffalo plaid prints and all, then the festival is your musical dream come true—and you don't even have to rev up your DeLorean.
From August 28-30, Outside Lands returns to San Francisco's Golden Gate Park for the second year running, following 2008's Radiohead-headlined extravaganza. This year is ruled by some of Generation X's sonic heroes—namely Pearl Jam (Friday) and Dave Matthews Band (Saturday)—but there are also plenty of other of-the-moment artists on the bill that we're excited about: The National, TV on the Radio, The Duke Spirit, and Jack White's newest super-band, The Dead Weather.

Where to Try Hip Wine Vintages in San Francisco

Of course you would expect San Francisco to be a wine lover's city, thanks to its proximity to Napa and Sonoma. But the question is, "Where is the best place to drink wine in the city?" We say there’s nowhere better than the hole-in-the-wall wine bar, Hotel Biron.
Hotel Biron (not an actual hotel) clings to the edge of Hayes Valley, an alley-like Rose Street, with only a brightly illuminated orange “B” sign to guide you, like an errant metro station beacon. Inside the narrow space, the walls are adorned with the works of local artists, and the few minuscule tables are always packed with a mixed crowd of oenophiles.

Checking In At Jamie's Place
The Top Chef judges have been awfully harsh this season, and we know they love the drama, but they seem genuinely disappointed in their chef-testants this year. (Aside--does anyone else hate new judge Toby Young? Not feeling it at all.)
Anyway, the one person they seem to be giving a lot of face time too is Jamie Lauren, the 30-year-old executive chef at San Francisco's Absinthe Brasserie and Bar. They've been making a big deal about her all along, and even when she screws up, it's kinda obvious they're not gonna kick her off. She won her first elimination challenge last night, and we're betting she's got a decent shot at winning it all. But what about her restaurant?

San Francisco Music Venues: Double Dutch
Double Dutch stands out in the mostly divey Mission with a stylish, polished old skool hip hop vibe. We love the rows upon stacked rows of ghetto blasters from the 80s hanging on the wall and an illuminated clear acrylic case of rare and unique sneakers.
The full bar offers everything from top shelf to bottom of the barrel which is appropriate given every Tuesday night is "Hoodies and Heels" night. That's what we call hauntingly awesome.
Nightly djs keep the intimate back room moving with a steady roll of hip hop and electronic beats. One thing that we've always appreciated about this place is the laid back atmosphere. It's hip hop without being thug in any way, more big thick glasses and brightly colored sneakers than big chains and Kevlar vests.
