Deepak Chopra Does Comics? See The Battle For Good And Evil At LACMA

Where: 5905 Wilshire Blvd. [map], Los Angeles, CA, United States, 90036
October 30, 2009 at 3:34 PM | by Heidi Atwal | 0 Comments

Spider-Man, Batman, and the X-Men are just a few of the superheroes who've earned a respected place in the comic book canon. Dedicated collectors know about mainstream bionic men and woman, and maybe a few underground characters as well, but a new exhibit at Los Angeles' LACMA introduces the public to the transportive world of Indian comics.

Being generally familiar with stories from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana, our interest in modern renderings of ancient gods and goddesses, and the interpretation of said stories, is what drew us to the exhibit. Heroes and Villains: The Battle for Good in India's Comics runs through February 7th of next year, and is a compact representation of cultural comic book art and well-preserved folios from hundreds of years ago.

Doughnuts Make the Move to Fancy Restaurants

Where: 7360 Beverly Blvd [map], Los Angeles, CA, United States, 90036
July 20, 2009 at 2:52 PM | by BS | 2 Comments

It looks like the high-end doughnut trend is here to stay. Like their once-humble cupcake brethren, doughnuts have crossed the threshold from birthday party standby/early morning snack to gourmet bakery must-have. Now, they’re even showing up on the menus at fancy restaurants.

Trendy LA restaurant Grace is one of the first four-star restaurants to jump on the fancy doughnut train. The Mid-City West eatery recently added a Wednesday “Doughnut Shoppe” night, when the pastry chef whips up a few batches of fresh, seasonal doughnuts that come in innovative flavors like ginger cream cheese filled, curried sugar glazed, and buttermilk brown butter.

The doughnuts are served with a selection of ice cream (like lemon ripple or hazelnut gelato), along with a glass of spiced milk for dipping. A plate of three goes for $12, and you can also pick up a dozen to go for $18. Pricey, yes, but you’re not at Dunkin’ Donuts anymore.

Chasing 'Lost' Season 5: Some Like It Hoth

April 16, 2009 at 1:06 AM | by Todd | 1 Comment

Just where in the world is LOST? Each episode, we're looking at the real and fictional locations of LOST from a travel perspective, and plotting them on our Google map. Be sure to check out all the map points, updated weekly!

This week, the focus is all on Miles and his backstory. After a few clips showing him as a boy and then rebellious young adult, we come to find that Dr. Marvin Candle is his father. Although Miles never knew his father in his first life, he has the unique opportunity to get to know him on the island.

Miles also has a gift for seeing dead people -- and by that, we mean he's a ghost whisperer. On an errand for Horace, he and Hurley deliver the body of a Dharma person who had an unfortunate incident with electromagnetism. A metal filling in a tooth came loose and exited his body through the head. Not a nice way to go. It got us wondering what resources there are for emergency dental work abroad. Since medical tourism is all the rage, you might want to check out what Healthbase has to say about dental tourism.

Germany's Twin Art Movements

Where: 5905 Wilshire Blvd. [map], Los Angeles, CA, United States, 90036
February 24, 2009 at 1:01 PM | by EricRosen | 0 Comments

You know those studies that finds twins who have been separated at birth and looks at how being raised in different environments affects what would essentially be the same person (genetically speaking, at least)? Well now imagine doing that with an entire nation’s art movements.

That’s the idea behind the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s “The Art of Two Germanys/Cold War Cultures,” on exhibit now through April 19, 2009.

Tall Trees Tower In SoCal

Where: 189 The Grove Dr. [map], Los Angeles, CA, United States, 90036
December 12, 2008 at 2:30 PM | by kjb | 0 Comments

Everyone knows that Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree has a trademark on the holiday season, but this week we’re ferreting out spruces and firs that might be even better.

We’ve traveled to major cities around this globe this week in search of the biggest and best Christmas trees, but we return to the US for a triumvirate of tall trees. Where better to celebrate the holiday season than the land of excess--Los Angeles. Of course, shopping is a major draw in SoCal, so it’s no surprise that the area’s malls have a little competition going on.

Fall TV 2008: Where Is This Year's Peach Pit?

Where: 6333 W. 3rd St. [map], Los Angeles, CA, United States, 90036
August 26, 2008 at 3:00 PM | by egw | 0 Comments

Jaunted is planning our fall travel with some help from the networks. Check out our Fall TV 2008 Map to go where your new favorite characters go.

Purists are already scoffing at the CW's decision to revive the '90s teen hit "Beverly Hills 90210"--after all, was ever a sublimer line written than "Donna Martin graduates"? But this version promises more sex, fancier houses and coy updates to West Beverly High School.

As central to this "90210" as the previous one is the Peach Pit, that perfect hangout spot we all craved in high school. The Los Angeles-area Kokomo Cafe has already been singled out as the location of this edition's Peach Pit, and if you hit it up on September 2 you can order a special 90210 menu item--a dish that, given the CW's track record, may hang around longer than the actual series itself.

Table Crashing: Hollywood Power Players at Angelini Osteria

Where: 7313 Beverly Blvd [map], Los Angeles, ca, United States, 90036
April 21, 2008 at 5:04 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Confession: We first heard about Angelini Osteria on Giada's Weekend Getaways on the Food Network about a year ago. Then it popped up again on our radar when it hit the Best 75 Restaurants in Los Angeles list at number 17.

So we decided to make an early reservation at 6:30 pm on a Friday night. The restaurant is on a unassuming block of Beverly Boulevard just east of Fairfax Avenue and close to The Grove shopping center.

We got a table towards the back but it turned out to be the second best table in the house. Why's that? Because it was next to the best table in the house and guess who showed up for a 7 pm reservation? Big-time movie producer Brian Grazer and Paramount honcho Sumner Redstone. They were dining with two ladies and didn't do much of interest. Except Grazer carries around a Volcom backpack. Weird.

But on to the menu.

The Way We Wore

Where: 334 S. La Brea Ave [map], Los Angeles, ca, United States, 90036
July 17, 2006 at 11:11 AM | by Katherine | 0 Comments

The Way We Wore is the kind of place that, once you discover it, you can't believe you ever lived without it.  Such is the power of its vintage collection, an endless display of sartorial bounty that's orgasm-inducing for a fashionista (Men: Think free playoff tickets).  Mandy Moore, who's always on some best-dressed list or another, calls this boutiqe her favorite store in L.A., and it's certainly one of the most friendly.

There aren't many other places in town that sell $5,000 Fendi pieces and have a smiling, helpful sales staff.  Not all items are that expensive, though--there's plenty in the $100 range.  Best of all, the tags all list the decade from whence the dresses came, making it easier for the historically challenged to find a dress for a '50s-themed cocktail party.

Farmer's Daughter Hotel is Priced Rightly

Where: 115 South Fairfax Avenue [map], Los Angeles, ca, United States, 90036
July 12, 2006 at 10:15 AM | by Katherine | 0 Comments

Some people are under the mistaken impression that just because the Farmer's Daughter Hotel in L.A. is inexpensive, it's totally unsexy.  While it's true that pretty much all Price Is Right guests stay at this motel, a recent remodel has made it a new celebrity hot spot.  The special "No-Tell" room, tucked away in the back, is stocked with a full bar, among other things, and has been the site of a few so far discreet celeb parties: One guest spotted Tori Spelling skulking around the lobby.

The new restaurant, TART, is also quickly becoming one of L.A.'s most popular breakfast and lunch spots.  And it's not just the eye candy that's attractive, as the menu is getting good reviews for its Americana dishes like steak sandwiches, mac and cheese, and blueberry pie. We'd say "C'mon down!", but, well, that would be a little tacky.
