Awhile back, we called out Denver International Airport for charging for Internet access. True, a bunch of business road dogs love the place--and we're beginning to like it, too--but we could never truly love a place that charges for 'net day passes.
Luckily, when we dropped in recently, we found a free WiFi hotspot. Truth be told, we went up to the Presidents Club in Concourse A to pull a Wendy Perrin. That's when we picked up a signal for a network called "MesaVerde." A quick walk downstairs revealed this to be the hotspot of a restaurant in the concourse of the same name. So there's the trick to DIA: pay for AT&T WiFi or sit outside Mesa Verde soaking up the bandwidth for free.

Denver International Airport--the pointy-topped United hub outside the city--has won the 2006 Best in Business Award for Best Airport in North America. Sure the airport's public art program is cool, spicing up a drab interior. And we'll give credit to the architects who didn't do the standard "the roof looks sort of like an airplane wing" thing. But we're a little confounded as to how the business travelers who voted to grant the awards chose DIA when it doesn't even have free WiFi.
Nossir, Denver International has farmed out the job of Internet access to AT&T Wi-Fi, which has the whole building wired with their proprietary network. This sucks for people that don't fly out of Denver frequently, and here's why. If you don't have AT&T service at home, it costs $20 a month to sign up for a one-year contract to use AT&T's hotspots. (Yes, they have access points in a few other airports, so if you fly back and forth weekly, be our guest.) There's also the option to buy prepaid "unlimited" day passes at the price of $25 for three connections--better hope that signal doesn't drop!
