Nothing Reminds Us More Of Austin Than 'Aerial Dance Troupe'

Austin is a town celebrated for its eccentricity, where everything seems to have an alternate flavor, and so you can probably guess that their favorite local dance troupe isn’t your run-of-the-mill ballet company.

Well if weird is what you want, this weekend’s performance from Austin’s Blue Lapis Light dance company shouldn’t disappoint. The show, Impermanence, is semi modern dance meets cirque de soleil meets parkour, and involves dancers who are hooked up to aerial harnesses, allowing them to fly through the air and leap all around the 150-foot tall J.J. Pickle Federal Building in Austin’s financial district.

The dance performance, or circus, or whatever it is, runs this Thursday to Sunday, and costs $20—but the final performance, on Sunday, is a pay-what-you-can show to let everyone have a bit of the unusual fun.

Fun Fun Fun In Austin This Weekend

Where: 403 E 15th St. [map], Austin, TX, United States, 78701
November 6, 2008 at 11:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

Austin becomes the center of the indie rock universe every spring for the South by Southwest music festival. But while that 15-year-old fest has grown pretty unaffordable for anyone who doesn't own a record label, another Austin festival is stepping up to the plate with something a little more every-rocker.

The Fun Fun Fun Fest, now in it's third year, takes place this weekend in Austin's Waterloo Park. FFFF doesn't have SXSW's 1,000-plus bands, but they do bring a pretty stellar lineup this year, with indie A-listers like The National, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Minus the Bear, and ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.

And with tickets starting at $25--including free after-parties around Austin--we might have a reason to start moving our annual Texas trip to November.

Radical NY! in Austin

Where: 823 Congress Avenue [map], Austin, TX, United States, 78701

There's a type of New Yorker that wouldn't trust anyone but another New Yorker--if that, even--to say something about their city. But maybe Austin could get a break from that--half of New York's hipsters descend upon the city once a year for SXSW anyway, so an open mind is the least that they, as invaders, could lend. The Austin Museum of Art's Radical NY! exhibit should make New Yorkers proud, rather than pissed.

Radical NY! focuses on two generations of radical New York artists ('74-'84 and '40s-'60s abstract expressionism) that shook up the city and the art world as a whole. It's got everything from de Kooning to Basquiat and beyond, but you better hurry to the AMOA Downtown, because the show wraps on January 28. Bitter NY natives might be calmed by the fact that the exhibit was actually co-organized by the Grey Art Gallery at NYU.
