Inside RL Restaurant in Chicago

For the "ladies who lunch," the first stop on a trip to Chicago is a meal at RL Restaurant, the bistro from American fashion designer Ralph Lauren. As it abuts his eponymous store, the Restaurant is a destination in itself, where diners may immerse themselves in the latest designs over a mimosa and salad. Since this concept has fared so well, Ralph is bringing it overseas to Paris as Ralph's, upscale dining which will be attached to his new flagship store on the Boulevard Saint Germain.

Not only will it be the first such fashion cafe from Ralph in Europe, but it will be a sight to see. Racked National reports: "Built in a 1600s hotel particulier, the interiors have been restored with rough limestone, French white-oak paneling, and Versailles-style parquet floors."

Bouillon’s Not Just For Soup in Paris

Where: 3 rue Racine, Paris, France, 75006

Eating at this historical landmark just around the corner from the Place de l’Odeon in Paris’s St. Germain des Pres district is like taking a step back in time to the early 1900’s, with the service and menu to match.

The Bouillon Racine has been around since 1906, housed in a gorgeous Belle Epoque building with delicate iron latticework, Art Nouveau lighting fixtures, intricate woodwork, beveled mirrors, glass “paintings,” and an absinthe-green bar.

There used to be such “bouillons” all over Paris, but now only a few remain, including Racine. The restaurant owes its current glory to a renovation completed in 1996, which is also when it qualified to become a historical landmark.

Drinking Sangria Underground in Paris

Where: 10, rue de l'Odéon, Paris, France, 75006

To start with, we were a bit confused in Paris last week. Wandering around the touristy bits (St Germain, the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre), we didn’t see too many young French folk.

We thought maybe the sky-high prices (€8 for a beer seemed to be the standard) had them all hibernating at home. Until we got off the metro at Odeon, in the Latin Quarter, and realised that most of the under-30s population of Paris seemed to be congregating there, either queuing round the block to get into the cinema (no, it wasn’t an Odeon), sitting outside at the brasseries, or clustering round the door of Bar 10 for a ciggie break, which is where we were headed.

Paris Drinking: Chez Cool Bar

Where: 11 rue des Canettes, Paris, France, 75006

We think cave dwelling is tres cool, particularly when it involves excessive amounts of vin rouge and loyal Parisians dancing on tables to old French and Hebrew songs. You'll find it at Chez George, one of Paris' oldest wine bars in the relatively tourist-free Mabillon section.

Legend has it that "the house of George" was once a hiding place for Jews during the Nazi occupation. Be it an old barman's tale or accurate fact, we loved the cavern's dimly lit narrow passageways and smoky underground crannies. We also liked that the doorman thought twice before letting us Americans in, a sure sign that we were entering a "locals only" zone.
