Ditching Craigslist To Find Digs

January 5, 2009 at 9:00 AM | by BS | 0 Comments

If all the inauguration rental rip offs have you second-guessing your plans to attend Obama's big day, you may want to check out Inauguration Homes, a new website peddling, yep, rentals during inaugural week.

The site allows you to list rentals or browse listings for free, and the proprietors claim to independently verify the legitimacy of each listing, which are limited to houses within DC proper. The site mostly avoids the over-the-top listings found on Craigslist, but that's not to say you'll find the steal of the century here. Let's call the finds "reasonably overpriced."

At $500 a night, this Cleveland Park studio beats most of the deals on CL, and there are a bunch of similarly priced places in decent nabes, while the crazy-expensive listings at least look like pretty outrageous places, such as this five-bedroom Kalorama townhouse, asking $8,750 a night.

Hipster Inaugural Ball

Where: 1101 Kenyon NW [map], Washington, DC, United States, 20010
December 30, 2008 at 11:30 AM | by BS | 5 Comments

Most non-political types traveling to DC for the great Obamafest will probably have their fill of the town's stuffiness in about five minutes, so we're betting many will be looking for the quickest route away from downtown once the swearing-in ceremony is over.

For a decidedly downscale inauguration night, check out the Common Man's Inaugural Ball at Wonderland Ballroom, a former residential home in Columbia Heights now operating as the district's hippest dance party and 20-something hangout. Required attire is "funky eclectic formal," the open bar lasts 'til 4 am, and FUNK DC will be on the turntables.

Unfortunately, hip as it is, Wonderland isn't immune from inaugural price-gouging. The entry fee is a cheeky $69--but it includes a limited edition t-shirt and poster.

Brunching With Biden

Where: 1600 Rhode Island Avenue, NW [map], Washington, DC, United States, 20010
December 18, 2008 at 10:30 AM | by BS | 0 Comments

Washington is getting so swept up in this inauguration mania that restaurants throughout the District are offering all kinds of special menus with cheeky political-minded offerings inspired by... Joe Biden?

Well, at least one eatery is. Nage Restaurant, which has one branch on the Delaware shore and another in the Marriott hotel on Embassy Road in DC, is getting hyped for their native son and VP-elect with "Biden Brunches" the first three Sundays in January.

The menu will be full of First State classics--yes, they exist--like Southern Delaware style chicken in a blanket and Northern Delaware scrapple. There will even be a Biden impersonator on hand, just for the ambiance. No doubt he'll be arriving by train.

Where: 3301 14th St. NW [map], Washington, DC, United States, 20010
May 21, 2008 at 1:00 PM | by BS | 0 Comments

Always a corporate-lovin' town, Washington, DC's java options skew the chain route, with more Starbucks and Cosi outposts than corrupt politicians and lobbyists. But local Mayorga Coffee has crept up on the big guys, building a mini-chain of nine area locations, from the grab-and-go counters at BWI, Dulles and Reagan National Airports, to a massive lounge and performance space in Silver Spring.

The company's newest offering, Mayorga Lounge and Coffee, is in suddenly happening Columbia Heights, recently insta-gentrified with a flurry of new establishments both cool (uber-hipster bar Wonderland Ballroom and vegan bakery Sticky Fingers) and corporate (Target, Ruby Tuesday and, yes, Starbucks).
