A Retro Diner Brunch in Philly? Better Make It a Double

Where: 138 Market Street [map], Philadelphia, PA, United States, 19106

Sometimes, we just want a good stiff drink with our omelet--oh wait, that's all the time. In the arena of alcohol and egg whites, there is one revamped classic corner dinner which does not disappoint: The Continental on Market Street in the Olde City. Back when we somehow managed to spend a weekend in Philadelphia for under $100, The Continental drew us in with its homespun good looks, kitschy olive-on-a-toothpick lamps, and retro airline lounge theme.

Shopping the Non-Toxic Side of Philadelphia

The mantra "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" has never been more apt than when it comes to Philadelphia's Big Green Earth Store, an eco-boutique out to save the world one ounce of natural laundry detergent at a time.

Set between other independent shops on Market Street in Philly's Old City, Big Green Earth aims to draw in the curious passersby and convert them to the religion of eco-friendly cleaning supplies and household goods. Entering the store, one passes by life-size figures of Spiderman and Batman (perhaps an example of reuse from an comics shop) and is immediately confronted with recycling bins. Don't know where to take those old cell phones and chargers? Big Green Earth has a bin for them and for a few other curious things too.

Chifa

Where: 707 Chestnut St. [map], Philadelphia, PA, United States, 19106
December 29, 2008 at 11:30 AM | by | Comments (2)

Jose Garces is Philadelphia's closest thing to a chef-lebrity, so when he makes an announcement, the foodies in town listen. Garces, the local Latin restaurant demigod behind Tinto, Amada and Distrito, has announced his highly anticipated next venture, Chifa, set to open early next year.

The innovative new spot celebrates the fusion-y cuisine that grew out of the Chinese immigrant community in Peru. Trend alert! Garces' unique take on Sino-Peruvian food features dishes like slow-poached chicken steeped in a spicy sauce with walnuts and queso fresco and roast duck buns over foie gras mousse.

The lavish restaurant, featuring a central ceviche bar set on top of a Chinese apothecary cabinet, is set in the old 707 Restaurant space on Chestnut Street, just a block from Independence National Historical Park.

Presidential Travel: Be the Candidate

Where: 525 Arch St. [map], Philadelphia, PA, United States, 19106

If there was any doubt that politics and pop culture have become thoroughly intertwined, this election season has surely put it to rest. (Let's not forget that Paris Hilton has released an energy policy!)

And of course, what we see on TV determines who we want to be. So just as "ER" inspired legions of medical students and "Alias" led to a spike in CIA applications, this year's 24/7 campaign environment is sure to create a whole new generation of would-be politicians and talking heads.

And now that being a political candidate is about the coolest thing a kid could hope to grow up to be, the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia has jumped on the bandwagon with the new Headed to the White House exhibit. In the interactive exhibit, you get to design campaign logos, deliver soaring speeches, craft your strategy and make your way through a general election campaign. So if you think there hasn't already been enough campaign coverage, head to Philly and add to the din!

Philly Music Venue: The Khyber

Where: 56 S. 2nd St. [map], Philadelphia, PA, United States, 19106
August 18, 2008 at 11:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

Set in the heart of Old City, The Khyber is one of Philly's longest-standing live music venues, and somehow has escaped morphing into a tourist trap, unlike most of its neighbors.

The laid-back dive bar is your best chance to catch a Philly band that will be famous a year from now, while many already-well-known local bands often return for the nostalgia factor. Upcoming shows range from local dance-rockers Fat City Reprise to indie rock vets Mock Orange and disco-punkers Electric Six.

For non-musical pursuits, the upstairs bar is open every night, with drinking specials that include $1 PBR until 11 pm and an open bar on Sundays for 10 bucks.
