You'll Wish You Were On This Black List

November 24, 2008 at 4:52 PM | 0 Comments

The Black List exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum has nothing to do with HUAC, but there is some Hollywood in it. Photography fans will love this series of portraits of famous African Americans like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Colin Powell and Chris Rock.

Photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and movie critic and commentator Elvis Mitchell collaborated on a Sundance-shown HBO documentary called "The Black List: Volume One" about the African-American experience in America, consisting of interviews with the latter shot by the former. Greenfield-Sanders also took the photographs which make up the exhibit (through March 29, 2009), which debuted in Houston and plans to move beyond Brooklyn next spring.

Got HBO? Watch the documentary "The Black List" before or after you make the trek to the Brooklyn Museum. Don't forget, the museum is free the first Saturday of every month from 5 to 11 pm.

New NYC Restaurant: James

July 9, 2008 at 9:30 AM | 1 Comment

Once upon a time--like three years ago--New York's trendy restaurant scene stopped at the East River. Today, it extends well into Brooklyn, with some of the city's most upscale eateries in Cobble Hill, Park Slope and Fort Greene.

The foodie conquest of Brooklyn continues to spread even further into the borough, with the latest high-end restaurant row popping up this year in Prospect Heights. The newest entry is James Restaurant, a homey dining room set in a 100-year-old brownstone on St. Marks and Carlton Aves.

The menu is "old-world European influenced," with the expected Brooklyn organic/locavore touches in dishes like crispy sweetbreads with rhubarb honey glaze and dandelion greens, grass-fed beef burger with Cotswold cheese and organic Pennsylvania greens with sherry and black pepper dressing.
