Be careful what you do to Mel in her dreams because she just might attack you at a Tae Kwon Do session.

While Bret and Jemaine acted like angels in Mel's first dream on Flight of the Conchords, they weren't as well behaved in her subsequent dreams. So when Murray brought Mel along to the Tae Kwon Do class to add a female element to his friendship exercises with Bret, Jemaine and his friend Dick Jim, she ended up exacting revenge for whatever B and J did in her dreams.

Even More Places in Brooklyn for BBQ

Where: 49 Lincoln Rd [map], Brooklyn, NY, United States, 11215
January 28, 2009 at 12:45 PM | by BS | 0 Comments

Seriously, what's up with NYC BBQ? If these things descend on New York any quicker they're going to put Gray's Papaya and Ray's Pizza out of business.

The latest is Billy Sunday's, which opened last week in the just-starting-to-gentrify neighborhood of Prospect-Lefferts Garden, Brooklyn. An early stake-out reports the place is pretty legit, with heaping sandwiches of hickory-smoked beef and pork, topped with the requisite sauerkraut and traditional Kansas City molasses or, getting a little crazier, hot blueberry chili. The sides are well in order too—Memphis baked beans, dirty rice, fried mac 'n cheese and the like.

The down-home cuisine is matched with a predictably chilled out Brooklyn vibe, although the commenterati are already aflutter about one decidedly Manhattan import--$7 beer, possibly a first for this side of Prospect Park.

Exercise Your Mind And Body At The Brooklyn Lyceum

Where: 227 4th Ave. [map], Brooklyn, NY, United States, 11215
October 31, 2008 at 1:05 PM | by egw | 0 Comments

Break the bounds of Broadway with our coverage of the Brooklyn arts scene.

You've been going out all week, and you need a break. We can sense it. There's just as much to do at the Brooklyn Lyceum as at our other picks, but it's definitely more of a community venue, without the pressure of putting on eight pairs of leggings and the perfect T-shirt.

A former public bathhouse, the Brooklyn Lyceum now hosts movie screenings, dance concerts, exercise classes--basically anything that can take advantage of its wide open space. Like the borough it's in, it shows the incredible diversity of the people who use it... without sending out a press release.

This weekend: Get all spooked with Halloween movies and "Poe-riffic" stories tonight at 7:30; watch "The Marriage Of Figaro" for some genteel laughs Saturday night and chill out with a Sunday night jazz concert.

New on the Scene: Park Slope's Lookout Hill Smokehouse

Where: 230 Fifth Ave. [map], Brooklyn, NY, United States, 11215
June 6, 2008 at 10:35 AM | by Hunter Walker | 2 Comments

Brooklyn has a lot of great barbecue options, and sadly, Lookout Hill Smokehouse is not one of them. Lookout Hill opened about two weeks ago, in a location that's been bad luck for a string of restaurants including another barbecue spot, previous tenant Biscuit BBQ.

Lookout Hill seemingly got off to a great start, with an ambitious all-wood design and a new smoker brought in from Tennessee. But we can't see how they expect to succeed where Biscuit failed: The food simply isn't up to snuff.

Destination: Union Hall

Where: 702 Union St. [map], Brooklyn, NY, United States, 11215

If you find yourself in Park Slope, Brooklyn and are looking for a good beer and a game of indoor bocce, head to Union Hall. With over 5,000 square feet of bar, restaurant, and live music space, this place somehow still manages to feel intimate. It must be the book-laden shelves, cozy library-like furniture, and creepy oil portraits on the walls. Head to the rear to sign up for a friendly indoor bocce game, or step outside to the garden for drinks al fresco.

There's a different band every night of the week, and the downstairs bar area muffles the noise nicely. We liked the spacious, slate unisex bathrooms (barely a line!) and unlimited beers on tap. And the menu didn't hurt either - pot stickers, housemade flatbread with bourbon carmelized onions. We also hear brunch is equally as delicious. A bonus: after the live bands go, there's a tempting 80s DJ downstairs and just enough room to let loose. The only thing that bugged us was trying to get a cab home.
