Tweet of the Week: World Cup Worldwide Anarchy

June 22, 2010 at 4:57 PM | by | Comments (0)

We love Tuesdays. Why, you ask? Because the day brings many travel tips and quips as "Travel Tuesday" on Twitter, and we're going to share our favorite with you. Got an avid travel twitterer we should follow? Let us know.

It's official; the world—and by extension, the Twitterverse—has got World Cup 2010 fever. 9:30am EST matches be damned, we've got to watch the games and root from tens of thousands of miles away for our favorite teams, but today brought the first huge losses of the tournament.

Mexico lost 0-1 to Uruguay, Greece was kicked to the dirt with 0-2 to Argentina and France gave it up with 1-2 against South Africa. Now that we're coming down to the final two weeks and Europe isn't exactly the soccer powerhouse it used to be, thanks to the energy of South America and host country South Africa, die-hard fans are getting antsy.

@spencerspellman, of NileGuide and UpTake, nicely sums up the sentiments:

I can only imagine that if any more of the Big Euro teams bow out early, there's going to be worldwide anarchy...#worldcup

Without a doubt, the hottest pairs to have this season are Havaianas' limited-edition range of World Cup-themed sandals, representing 17 teams—USA, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Argentina, Spain, The Netherlands, Australia, England, Paraguay, France, Japan, Italy, Portugal, Nigeria and Cameroon—and bearing their colors so that you can show support for your team from your soles up.

We first fell in love with Havaianas four years ago, and these nationalistic ones especially, during the last World Cup. Of course the blue-and-white Italia ones were sold out even before the team won, but we happily slipped into a pair of Deutschlands and we'll do it again with a fresh pair this year.
