Now that it's the dead of winter it's also high time to head out on getaways to tropical locales, but often travelers don't realize there are plenty of ways to help out the community while soaking in the sun.
For example, in the Turks & Caicos there is an overwhelming population of pups, known as Potcakes, who need homes. One organization, Potcake Place, is helping to place these dogs with loving families visiting from the U.S.

If Chilean Patagonia is on Your Bucket List, Help Reforest It
Chilean Patagonia, one of the country's Chile's most coveted bucket list destinations, has been greatly impacted by fires and human activity over the past 100 years and more than 7 million acres have already been destroyed.

How to Visit Canada's Famous 'IKEA Monkey'
In case you didn't visit the internet last week, a tiny monkey in a tiny shearling coat showed up in the parking lot of a Toronto area IKEA. As it turns out, the monkey, a Rhesus Macaque, is named "Darwin" and lives as the pet of a real estate lawyer. Or did, since Darwin broke out of his cage and his owner's car and was eventually captured by Toronto Animal Services. That's only where his story begins.
Thanks to tweets and Instagrams from IKEA shoppers who spotted the monkey, the animal attained web stardom in record time. He was not returned to his owner (who was fined for owning an illegal animal), but sent directly to "monkey rehab" at Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary.

If you can't get enough of San Diego Zoo's newly-named, 15-week-old giant panda cub Xiao Liwu, there is a voluntourism program that helps panda lovers like you make a real difference in these animals lives.
Pandas are cute, but they're also endangered as their Chinese habitats shrink and they are hunted by poachers. IFRE Volunteers Abroad, which has worked to make voluntourism more affordable and accessible for everyone, has partnered with the Ya’an Panda Conservation Center near the city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province, China to allow volunteers to assist with their panda conservation efforts.
