Instagram Your Virgin America Experience for 30% Off Flights

September 19, 2012 at 10:15 AM | by | Comment (1)

If you're planning to fly today, keep an eye out for some extra special passengers walking through the airport. Particularly, towards any mood-lit gates for Virgin America. If this describes your travel plans, have your smartphone ready, since there's a little prize involved.

Virgin is launching a new promotion and the fun all starts today with, as expected, a bucket load of Virgin-ness. The promotion is highlighting the airline's passenger "Experience" and will begin to use actual photos snapped onboard any flight. If you get some cool shots mid-flight today, upload them to Instagram and push it to Twitter using the hashtag #MyVXExperience and your photos will be live-streamed to the NASDAQ board in Times Square.

For those with fingers who can snap, upload and tag photos fastest (and you don't have to be on a Virgin America flight to do so), a 30% discount code for a Virgin flight will hit your Twitter DMs. Not too shabby! Just be fast, since this is only open to the first 1,000 photos.

The Best Travel Video You Will See Today

August 23, 2012 at 1:53 PM | by | Comments (0)

Hopefully by this point in the week you've already seen the viral music video "Gangnam Style," so we safely declare the above cuteness the best video you'll see today.

It of course comes from Virgin America, who've been using Boo—the "cutest dog in the world"—to promote their pet friendliness. Back in June, Boo and Buddy (plus their owner) flew VX and the experience has been documented on VX's twitter and instagram. Finally it comes to YouTube with this best-of overview of Boo's First Class travel.

And, yes, his boarding pass does say "WORLD CUTEST DOG/BOO."

At the SF Giants' 'Virgin America Day': Free Flights and a Fastest First Pitch

August 13, 2012 at 10:32 AM | by | Comments (0)

This weekend, Virgin America decided to celebrate turning five years old just as I'm sure most of us celebrated our fifth birthdays: by parking a giant float outside of a baseball stadium, giving away lots of free swag, and blasting dance music. I mean, at least that's how I remember my fifth birthday party.

As we recently found out on Virgin's inaugural flight from San Francisco to Portland, the airline does know how to throw a party. We arrived to San Francisco's AT&T Park just as the "Virgin America Day" festivities were beginning. The DJ was playing the hits, lots of Virgin America employees were hanging out showing off their new Banana Republic uniforms, and Giants fans were climbing over each other to catch a free t-shirt.

Happy Fifth Anniversary, Virgin America

August 8, 2012 at 5:02 PM | by | Comments (0)

Chillax for a sec, mkay? We want to take a moment to alert you to the fact that not only is today the launch of Virgin America's new uniforms; it's also "Virgin America Day" in San Francisco and the entire airline's Fifth Anniversary celebrating the start of flights!

And guess what? We were actually there on that very first flight, August 8, 2007. It was the infancy of our live coverage, though we'd been cheering VX on from the start of the "Let VA Fly" campaign to the Department of Transportation. And, just as the airline has grown in awesomeness, so have we. Today we want to congratulate them by getting all sentimental and looking back on our own favorite photo moments:

Today's the Day: Virgin America Crew Don Their New Banana Republic Duds

August 8, 2012 at 11:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

We love it when airlines get new uniforms. Like, love love it and we're not even flight crew, so we can only imagine the elation at Virgin America as their employees don the new Banana Republic-designed uniforms.

Today is the very first day for the fresh outfits, which incorporate such flash as silk scarves, red trenches and red stripes on pilots' epaulets. If you're flying soon on Virgin America, now you know exactly what to say to quickly get on their good side—compliment them on the new uniforms!

If you're not flying Virgin America soon, there's still a way to watch as the crew gets comfortable with styling the slicker duds; VX crew is encouraged to submit "selfies" (self-shot photos) to Pinterest and Instagram of themselves sporting the new gear.

Everything You Need to Know to Grab Virgin America Elevate Gold

July 26, 2012 at 3:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

Well this is sure the week to announce loyalty programs changes, huh? First we had the announcement of JetBlue's TrueBlue Mosaic level, and now Virgin America is going to reward their more frequent flyers with two—count 'em—two levels above regular Elevate Red, and with accompanying complimentary perks.

Please welcome Virgin America's Elevate Silver and Elevate Gold to the frequent flyer status dance party. The program officially kicks off August 8, so don't go logging in to check your status quite yet.

Becoming Virgin America Elevate Silver

· First off, you've got to be a member of the Elevate program in general. Join here for free and you'll begin at level Red.
· Fly somewhere, and do it a lot. To go from Red to Silver, you must earn 20,000 status points in a calendar year. Elevate points are based on how much money you spend on flights, not on miles flown, and it's 5 points per $1 spent.
· You'll need to spend $4,000 in one year flying Virgin America. Assume you spend $500 on each roundtrip, coast-to-coast flight, that's doable in 8 roundtrips.

Virgin America's Awesome Fifth Anniversary Present to Itself: NEW UNIFORMS!

July 12, 2012 at 8:54 AM | by | Comments (2)

Fact: when airline crew walk through an airport in uniform, they turn heads.

Fact: when Virgin airline crew walk through almost anywhere in uniform, they turn heads.

Now, as modern as the slim white blouse/black skirt look is on Virgin America, they're under pressure to keep that freshness alive as they celebrate their 5th Anniversary this year. And, let's be honest, they were a bit plain. Poor male in-flight crew were all black, head to toe! That's why, come August 8, Virgin America flight crew will hit the (tarmac) runway in all new uniforms designed on the (fashion) runway with Banana Republic. Not to mention that they'll also offer special edition collab products for sale to passengers as well.

Everyone from guest services to pilots will be re-suited in looks that break away from "the sea of navy blue that we have in the airline industry." Spoiler alert: RED TRENCHCOATS.

Designer crew togs are definitely a first for Banana Republic. Though they admit to having been approached to design airline uniforms in the past, this is the only time they've felt it ideal as a "marriage of the brands." Or, Banana's Creative Director Simon Kneen puts it, "Virgin America came along and we couldn't say no."

Why Yes, This Donut is Shaped Like an Airplane

June 8, 2012 at 3:41 PM | by | Comments (0)

"Put a bird on it!" That may be the most famous quote from the popular IFC series "Portlandia," but it's also Virgin America's goal—to put one of their birds on a Portland route. Today, that bird flies SFO-PDX for the first time and we're on board.

Let's start out by saying that Virgin America knows how to throw a launch party. They do it often enough that it's now a finely crafted work of party art. For this week's first landing in Portland, the theme was "local": local libations, local entertainment and local celebrities.

Just steps after disembarking the A320 named "Mt. Hoodie," the planeload of first flyers was greeted with a glass of champagne (not cheap stuff, either) and a red carpet, where "Portlandia" mayor Kyle MacLachlan gave a speech in character. It was hilarious and he made sure to let us know that even though his preferred method of travel is bicycle, he was still excited about Virgin America's entry into the city.

Virgin America's CEO Dishes During Their Inaugural Flight to PDX

June 6, 2012 at 7:37 PM | by | Comments (2)

"Put a bird on it!" That may be the most famous quote from the popular IFC series "Portlandia," but it's also Virgin America's goal—to put one of their birds on a Portland route. Today, that bird flies SFO-PDX for the first time and we're on board.

To say that Virgin America took advantage of every second of the short, hour-and-a-half inaugural flight from SFO to PDX would be a gross understatement. The second the doors closed, all the way until we disembarked in Portland, the activities for passengers kept on coming. Meanwhile, we dutifully filled you in from the air.

To kick off, the flight began by screening an episode of "Portlandia" that heavily featured the flight's two big guests: "Portlandia" mayor, actor Kyle MacLachlan and real Portland mayor/"Portlandia" mayor's assistant, Sam Adams. The episode got everyone on the flight pumped up and ready to party (as if they weren't already), as well as primed for a quick game of "Portlandia" trivia, which we knew all the answers to (duh).

Shortly after takeoff, Virgin's hand-picked crew began beverage service and, before we knew it, we were sitting with Virgin America CEO David Cush. Time for some serious questions.

Hello from 32,000 Feet, Onboard Virgin America's First Flight to Portland, Oregon

June 5, 2012 at 6:07 PM | by | Comment (1)

"Put a bird on it!" That may be the most famous quote from the popular IFC series "Portlandia," but it's also Virgin America's goal—to put one of their birds on a Portland route. Today, that bird flies SFO-PDX for the first time and we're on board.

LIVE from 32,000' above Northern California:

We are officially airborne and on our way to Portland! The pre-departure festivities at San Francisco's snazzy Terminal 2 were complete with cookies and celebratory remarks by Virgin America CEO David Cush and "Portlandia" mayor's assistant/real Portland mayor, Sam Adams. Kyle MacLachlan, who plays the mayor in "Portlandia," is here as well, so really we just need to have shell art kits in the seatback pockets and all will be ideal.

June 5, 2012 at 5:10 PM | by | Comment (1)

We warned you it was coming—a movie filmed entirely on airplanes while they're flying, and now's the time to see a whole lot more than just some still teaser images.

Virgin Produced has finally released a full preview of "Departure Date," a short film (half hour-ish) to be fully unveiled during the upcoming LA Film Festival, on June 11th. Following this, you'll be able to catch the full feature onboard Virgin Atlantic, Virgin America and Virgin Australia flights. That means it's not hitting the theaters, your TV or the internet...for now.

Allegiant Air, JetBlue and Southwest Bring This Week's New Routes

May 18, 2012 at 9:21 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Allegiant Air:
It hasn’t been too long since we last heard about Allegiant Air and their plans for Hawaii, but they’re already looking for more. The ultra low-cost carrier is going all in with their service to and from the Aloha State, and they just announced like five new tropical nonstop options. Bellingham, Washington; Eugene, Oregon; Santa Maria, California; and Stockton, California are all getting nonstop flights right over to Honolulu.

However, that’s not the end of their new route news, as they’re also flying right into Maui from Bellingham, Washington. All the new routes start just in time for the holiday season—like between November 14 and 18—and the initial fares can be had for as low as $159 each way.

· Frontier:
We used to get really excited over Frontier Airlines and their new route news, but now that we know that there’s no chance to score a free chocolate chip cookie, it’s just not the same. Regardless of how we feel deep inside, we’ll fulfill our due diligence by letting you know that the animal-tailed airline will be heading nonstop between Denver International Airport and Great Falls International Airport—that’s in Montana in case you didn’t know. The new flights started doing their thing earlier this week, and now they’ll continue to do so four times per week throughout the summer months. It’s Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and all the flying will be done via the carrier’s WiFi-enabled Embraer 190s.
