Britain's Newest Tourism Campaign Plants Anna Wintour and Victoria Beckham on the NYC Subway

Some people—contemporary economists, most historians, journalists on every inhabited continent, academic and professional political scientists, not a few government officials, etc—have taken to suggesting that Britain is facing inexorable decline. Having once ruled the high seas and controlled an empire upon which the sun never set, the Brits have seemingly shifted their focus from having a navy to obsessing over "Jersey Shore" knockoffs.

Quite the opposite, says the tourism board officials at VisitBritain. Not only is 2012 going to be the best year ever, but the United Kingdom itself is simply great! To show you just how great the United Kingdom is, and also to "deliver long-term economic benefits from the unprecedented level of interest generated by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games," they've launched a tourism campaign called GREAT.

To perfectly complement that kind of subtle branding, they've just locked up Victoria Beckham to cut commercials for them.

'American Idol' Star David Archuleta Rings in BritWeek 2010

Last night we attended the kick-off of BritWeek 2010 in Beverly Hills, an annual celebration of the accomplishments of Brits in the entertainment industry. Of course, the biggest thing on everyone's mind was the volcanic ash, and there were quite a few ashy jokes being passed around. But eventually folks carried on with the festivities, which included a special singing appearance by David Archuleta, who did a beautiful rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine" as well as an acapella version of "Prayer for the Children," both of which we managed to record snippets.*

One of the major sponsors of BritWeek is Virgin Atlantic and thus Sir Richard Branson was trotted out on stage for a Frost/Nixon style interview, done with actor Michael Sheen who plays David Frost in the movie (he is also appearing this season on "30 Rock"). Frost...er, Sheen interviewed Branson on a wide range of topics from his start as an entrepreneur, to his thoughts on capitalism and even on plans for Virgin Galactic.

But the event wasn't entirely about patting chaps and mates on the back for their work in California...

Beckham Goes Caped Crusader For Transatlantic Flight

Last week, we had a perfect demonstration of how not to look and how not to handle your passport when Twilight star Kristen Stewart traveled through LAX looking a mess and barely holding onto her passport. But trust good old former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham to trample through London-Heathrow in a black cape-y thing and giant shades and put in-flight fashion back on track.

No, we're not necessarily endorsing going pantsless with only a cape to keep you warm, but if you're flying first class from London back to the States as super world traveler Beckham is, you're welcome to look a little over-the-top. And that is why Victoria also gets a pass for toting a blue bag with a black outfit—at least she's also got her passport under wraps.

Posh Spice Takes Fashion Tips From Her Chauffeur

While we're now accustomed to watching Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice strut through airports in decidedly un-airplane friendly gear, we usually just chalk it up to celebrity image. More often than not, this means that Posh flouts comfort and walks through security or the baggage claim in 5-inch stilletos with a tailored suit or structured shoulders so big that we're thankful she has a seat in first class.

In her recent airport "photo shoot" at London's LHR, she's sporting her usual uniform of stilettos and skin tight jeans as well as a white Hermes Kelly bag that could easily fit two Olsens inside (or in this case, two Posh Spices). We can look beyond this, save for the questionable choice to also rock a chauffeur's hat.

Is this a new airport fashion statement or did she just snag this off her driver so she wouldn't be recognized? We're thinking it's the former unless the cabin pressure really did a job on her 'do.

Traveling The Globe Instead Of Getting Globes

Miss the big party? Why not? While Hollywood got all glammed up for the Golden Globes, some stars opted to stay away--but not stay home.

The choice was easy for Victoria Beckham, who schlepped her brood of boys to the Colosseum in Rome to have them pose with some gladiators. And surprisingly, "The Hills"' Audrina Partridge, herself not a nominee either, chose Cabo--but she didn't end up getting married on a whim there.

Mischa Barton continued her attempt to be more like us by posting bikini pictures of herself in the Indian beach getaway Goa. But Steve Martin probably didn't want those photos of himself bodysurfing in St. Barts to get out. Ditto with Rihanna, who covered her face to hide a rumored cold sore while out shopping in Dublin, Ireland on tour.

Ironically, it was the Super World Travelers who set their course for La-La Land--nominees Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie took home no prizes except each other. And Pitt's mustache.

Big winners Sunday night at the Globes were "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," which nabbed prizes for best drama and best musical or comedy. Kate Winslet snagged two acting awards for her lead role in "Revolutionary Road" and supporting role in "The Reader"; Mickey Rourke, Sally Hawkins and the late Heath Ledger were also honored. But everyone at the water cooler will be talking about how "The Wrestler" director Darren Aronofsky flipped off the cameras faster than NBC was able to blur it during Rourke's speech. Oh no! The children!

Heathrow's Brimming With Beckhams

When the Beckham clan touched down at Heathrow on Wednesday, it was a veritable head-covering hoedown, with Victoria rocking a fashion-forward Trilby and David sporting a high-perched pork pie.

Middle son Romeo James got in on the action, too, with his hoodie pulled up in true English fashion.

While there's no explaining the part of Victoria's outfit below the neck, the rest of the fam looked well dressed to deal with both the London cold and the frigid interior of an airplane. Layers are key, people, 'cause heaven knows you won't be getting a free blanket to cozy up with--not that you'd want to cozy up under a scratchy, recycled throw anyway.

Vegas Rumors Travel: Do Desperate Housewives Play Dominoes?

Slot machines and baccarat are so over: Eva Longoria is reportedly partnering with Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham for a night spot in Vegas that introduces the soon-to-be latest craze in betting games: Dominoes!

Longoria opened her own Hollywood restaurant "Beso" last year, where it not only failed to die but has thrived. But it was in looking for venues to launch Beso II in Vegas, she was introduced to the Beckhams, themselves looking for a toehold in the scene.

Apparently, the dominoes were Posh's idea, so celebrities can cry and run away from the tables when they lose just like at age 5. Will they also offer Connect Four?

Airport Photo Shoot: Makes 'Em Easier to Spot

A common luggage trick is to attach a brightly colored belt or tag to your generic checked bag. But did you know the trick also works on kids? No way are Cruz and Romeo Beckham going to be able to evade mom Victoria while they're both sporting those yellow polos. Well, the bodyguard behind them probably helps too...

Beckham told a reporter she turned down a role in the "Sex and the City" movie because it was being filmed during rehearsals for her Spice Girls world tour. Now that the tour is over, Posh is focusing on her dvb fashion line as well as sporting the designs of "Project Runway" winner Christian Siriano all over creation. Sources close to the family say Cruz and Romeo find fashion "yucky."

Music Travel: This Year's Spice Dropout

Well, that went well. Victoria Beckham has announced she is leaving the Spice Girls on the heels of the group's very successful world tour. Posh told a British tabloid she was the impetus to split up the Spice Girls the first time, and now she's anxious to get back to her other career as a fashion designer.

Those in the know (our sister, the Spice Girls super-fan) say Posh never had the strongest voice, so why would she want to stay in the band? She probably just doesn't want to leave David Beckham to be tempting eye candy for the ladies of LA. He's like a British Brad Pitt. But what Posh creations would you wear, if any?

Who wants to go shopping? Victoria Beckham, Claudia Schiffer and Dita Von Teese peep the looks presented by designer Roland Mouret at Paris' Fall 2008 Fashion Week. Mouret has dressed Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz and Angelina Jolie for runway shows in the past.

American fashionistas, don't fret--New York's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week starts February 1st! The tents will take over Bryant Park like they always do, so be ready to stake out some real estate on Avenue of the Americas if you're looking for your own celeb sighting.

Spice Girls' Biggest Fans Stand Out at L.A. Show

We've known it was coming since June, and the moment has arrived: The Spice Girls are back on tour! And the reviews are... well, actually, we don't care about the reviews. We'd rather just bask in the glory of Posh, Baby, Scary, Sporty and Ginger out on the road again.

At one of their recent L.A. shows, though, two audience members almost attracted more attention than the show on stage: David Beckham, who was there watching his wife, and Tom Cruise, who's Beckham's new best LA friend. According to a concertgoer, when Beckham got up to use the bathroom, he and his entourage commandeered the entire bathroom. Or should we say, he pulled a Gyllenspoon? How rude!

If you go to the concert in any city, do send us your review.

Posh Spice Just Finished "The Da Vinci Code"

Non-spoiler alert: At the end of The Da Vinci Code, detective Robert Langdon meets the Mona Lisa who has been transformed into a fembot with very large shoulder pads. Just kidding! That's Victoria Beckham posing for a fashion shoot outside the Louvre in Paris this week, just like one of those statues who move for coins.

We hear she's doing the shoot for Gilles Bensimon, the fashion photographer, Elle creative director, and sometimes America's Next Top Model judge — we remember only because Tyra butchers the pronunciation of his name every time.

If you're more into viewing non-plastic works of art, check out the Louvre's fall exhibit inside. It's called Masterpieces of Islamic Art and the critics are raving.
