Avoid Holiday Travel And Score Deals Like The Bahamas For Under $250

Where: Bahamas
November 20, 2009 at 3:19 PM | by Jennifer Kester | 0 Comments

Before you settle in for a long winter's nap, it's time for a warm-weather getaway. Travelzoo's offering a dirt-cheap package to the Bahamas where you'll get airfare and five nights at a hotel for $229.

You'll stay at Our Lucaya Reef Village in Grand Bahama Island. The hotel has a Vegas-style casino where you can blow the money you would have spent on full-price airfare and hotel, as well as two golf courses and four pools. But the most important amenity is that this resort sits right on the beach.

The deal's good for travel through December 19 and from January 3 to 31. We recommend that you avoid visiting during November, as it's still hurricane season in the Bahamas. Travelzoo warns that it'll take forever if you book this over the phone. A lot of people are taking advantage of this package and are jamming up the lines. So go the easy route by booking it online using promo code 500GBI and make sure you do it before November 25.

Fly To Ireland And Chill In Your Own Private Villa For 6 Days For $499

Where: Ireland
October 30, 2009 at 2:54 PM | by Jennifer Kester | 0 Comments

Get ready to chug some Guinness: Travelzoo's offering an Ireland package for $499 that includes round-trip airfare, six nights' accommodations on the grounds of a castle and a car rental for you to go exploring the western parts of the Emerald Isle.

The flight takes you to Shannon, in County Clare. Then you'll head to Limerick, where you and three of your buds (the package is based on four travelers) can crash in a three-bedroom private villa on the grounds of Adare Manor, a historic Irish castle that was just named one of the top three resorts in Europe by the 2009 Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards. You'll also get a full-sized car to shuttle you around the nearby sites, such as Galway, Killarney, the Cliffs of Moher and the Blarney Castle. But brush up on driving stick, or learn how to do it, since these rides won't be automatic.

Escape Cold Temps On Spain's Costa del Sol For 5 Nights At $499

October 16, 2009 at 3:11 PM | by Jennifer Kester | 1 Comment

When January comes around with its hella freezing weather, you'll be dreaming of sunny beaches; shoot, we're doing that now. To prevent seasonal affective disorder, you'll need a dose of Costa del Sol, or "Coast of the Sun." According to Travelzoo, the beachfront locale has more than 300 days of sunshine each year. The company's offering a package to the Spanish coastal region along the Mediterranean for $499, which includes a five-night vacay with airfare, but you have to book by Oct. 28.

The deal includes round-trip airfare from NYC to Malaga, Spain. You'll also spend five nights at either Sol Principe or Cervantes, both of which are four-star hotels. If you opt for Cervantes, you'll get free breakfast daily. And if you're the type to tire from frolicking on the beach all day—crazy talk, we know—you can add day tours to Cordoba, Granada or Tangier to the package for an additional $71 to $91.

Summer May Be Over, But Off-Season Deals Are Just Beginning

September 8, 2009 at 5:24 PM | by Heidi Atwal | 2 Comments

Let's collectively take a moment to mourn the end of summer, a season rich with getaways and celebrations like last weekend's definitive season-ender, Labor Day. While the masses file back to reality, we're not convinced that summer's close has to put a violent halt to our travel plans. If anything, the end of summer marks the beginning of off-season deals, which we gladly welcome to pocket some extra cash.

Keeping tabs on Travelzoo's Twitter feed is a smart way to stay wise to travel discounts which pop up from time to time, whether you're planning an overseas trip or are firmly in staycation mode. We found a couple that are worth noting, including a host of ticket discounts for everything from Mets games to two-for-one tickets to see Hairspray, if you happen to be in London.

Head To Rio's Copa, Copacabana Over Labor Day For $599

August 26, 2009 at 8:59 AM | by Jennifer Kester | 1 Comment

This is how we want to spend our Labor Day weekend: kicking it in Rio de Janeiro and staying only two blocks away from the famous Copacabana Beach. And only $599 for a four-day trip with airfare, hotel and breakfast included? We'll be there with yellow feathers in our hair and a dress cut down to there.

Vacation-planning/tour-guide company Gate 1 teamed with Travelzoo to run the holiday special, which includes round-trip airfare from New York City to Rio (other departure cities are available, but you have to check with Gate 1). The airline that will swoop you off to Rio depends on availability; we tried booking the package several times and both American Airlines and Delta popped up as our carriers. With taxes and fees (and a "package airfare" charge of $362.44), the final price is $1,068.14.

To take advantage of the deal, you have to start your extended Labor Day vacay on Sept. 3, though you can opt to leave Sept. 10, 17, 24 for an extra $50.

Everyone Wants You To Go Australia But Are You Really Gonna Go?

Where: Australia
April 9, 2009 at 5:01 PM | by juliana | 8 Comments

Move over South America! Australia is fast becoming the new hot destination. Or at least, it seems that way according to the Down Under Airfare War that keeps on raging.

Travelzoo has just let us know that the United Airlines and Delta have both matched V Australia's recent round-trip sale to Oz from Los Angeles starting at $649. The site recommends booking through their very own Fly.com (of course) but availability was found for departure dates Nov. 1 - Dec. 16 and returning between Nov. 3 - Dec. 21. Remember, that's Winter still Spring Down Under. Yet if you want to go before then V Australia has a flight from LA for only $530. And to think two years ago, we paid nearly $2,000 for our ticket on the not-as-cool Qantas. Ugh.

Low prices aside, we have to wonder who is really going to Australia these days? Do you plan on going soon? Or is it too far of a trek despite the budget fares? Will you just rent Australia instead?

Let us know how you really feel about visiting the wonderful world of Oz in comments below.

2009 Travelzoo Awards Give Top Honors to American Airlines

A photo from the 2008 Tzoos

Have you ever had a fantasy where several skimpily-clad flight attendants try to get you drunk on cocktails named "Zoo-tinis" and then hand you a giant letter "Z" as a reward for being awesome? If you were lucky enough to be British Airways or Royal Caribbean Cruises on Wednesday night, then it wouldn't have been a fantasy at all.

At the Travelzoo Awards 2009 at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, the "Top 20" email travel alerts newsletter reached into its bag of deal providers and picked the best of the best to bestow with a "Tzoo" award.

Looking at the list of winners, we can't help but wonder "WTF" for some, and utter a "hip-hip-hooray" for others. We've listed the most interesting of the awards for you below, and we're sure you'll recognize some of the major deal players who grace more than just Travelzoo with their low, low prices (we're talking about you, Megabus and Qantas).

Fly.Com's New Calendar Option Lets You Search for Cheaper Tickets

April 2, 2009 at 3:46 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

When Fly.com first appeared on the travel booking site scene, we were hoping that the flight aggregator would be somewhat different than the others. While we liked the book directly with the airlines option and the listing of the in-flight amenities, we weren't totally wowed by Fly.com.

But now we learn, thanks to Tom at Hudson Crossing Traveler, that Fly.com has introduced a new feature which lets you compare prices for different days in different months.

We plugged in a trip to Newark from Los Angeles for May 28 and a fare of $259 round-trip on American Airlines showed up. In the top tab of the results page, the last tab listed is "Calendar" and a helpful balloon tells you that "$246" is the best price. It turns out that fare is available in July. Not so helpful. However, Fly.com did pull up the cheapest date in May. And we could see that flying on a Friday or a Sunday is more expensive (obvs) at $279.

Interestingly, when we put in the same route and dates on Kayak.com (which already uses a calendar of fares) a Continental flight for $279 was the cheapest option. $20 is not that big of a difference but hey, that's a checked baggage fee these days.

Ryanair's Pay-to-Pee Policy Might Not Be as Reviled as We Thought

March 10, 2009 at 11:51 AM | by juliana | 1 Comment

We thought that when Ryanair introduced the possibility of using pay-for-toilets on its airplanes, everyone would say it was an outrageous fee to force on passengers. However, thanks to a study done by Travelzoo, we've learned the sad news that 41 percent of Americans would be ok with giving up their restroom privileges if it meant saving more money on a flight. Yes, people would forfeit going to the bathroom for a cheaper flight. Is nothing sacred in-air anymore?

So Far, Fly.com Is Not So Fly (Dot Com)

February 5, 2009 at 3:29 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

The internet is all abuzz today about the launch of Fly.com. Ok, maybe it was just us travel geeks since Travelzoo paid something like $1.75 million just for the domain name alone. (PS. Previous owner of Fly.com: Gimme a call, we'll do drinks!)

Of course, we had to give Fly.com a try. We plugged in a very popular route, LAX to EWR, for a trip we are taking at the end of May and decided to see what came back.

Since we are staying a bit longer than the weekend we could be flex with our dates. Leaving on Saturday, May 30 and returning Monday, June 8 we found a deal for $398 on United. Eh. American had flights for $419. Also, eh.

We did like how you could compare Priceline and Hotwire in different windows, yet those browser windows jumped about 50 percent in size when they opened. Kind of annoying. But once you find a fare that you like, the site sends you over to that airline's site and not just to the homepage, but to the actual "Book this flight" page. That's actually very comforting.

HOWTO: Find Those Last-Minute Labor Day Deals

August 27, 2007 at 2:30 PM | by ced138 | 1 Comment

Too busy soaking up rays and eating hot dogs to make Labor Day travel plans? Fortunately, discount travel site Travelzoo has just released its list of the 20 cheapest flights, stays, shows and packages throughout these United States for the big, long holiday weekend.

While the neighbors spend the holiday commemorating America's working-class heritage with lawn chair parades and backyard BBQs, Travelzoo readers can jet to Vegas on a $135 round-trip ticket to stay at the Stratosphere in Vegas for $35 a night before cashing in their $61 tickets to see Tony n' Tina's wedding.

Of course, interactive musicals in the capital of kitsch aren't for everyone. Travelzoo also posts deals this weekend on B&B packages in Nantucket and beach front hotel stays in Kauai--for one last chance to rock those white linen pants. Now that's the way to welcome fall.

Giant Travelzoo Deal Projection Wall Takes Vegas

April 9, 2007 at 3:21 PM | by markj | 0 Comments

The Travel industry is sorely lacking when it comes to trade shows. Last week the Travel Industry Association put on TravelCom at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.  While this show has a long way to go before people start calling this the CES, or AVN Expo of Travel, it is nice to see the industry planting the seeds amongst the Vegas monster shows.

However, there was one travel display that wowed both conference attendees and tourists. Travelzoo took over a Mandalay projection wall, usually reserved for Shark Reef promos, and projected larger than life slot machines that displayed live travel deals from the Travelzoo website. Many tourists stopped by to check out the display, taking plenty of photos and getting visibly disgusted if a deal popped up that beat whatever package deal they had recently booked.
