Did You Know? Boston-Logan Airport Has Its Own Newspaper

September 22, 2011 at 1:15 PM | by | Comments (0)

UPDATE: We guess print is dead, as Massport informs us that the paper is no longer available (and we only just picked up a copy in May).

"Print is dead," hmm? We completely agree in some respects, but walking through several international airports, you'd never know it from piles of complimentary newspapers specially written, edited and printed for the passengers briefly transiting through said airports.

Thanks to an extra long recent layover at Boston-Logan, we discovered BOS' Logan Times, a thin rag that discusses such topics as airport security complaints, area tourism and airport amenities. It's not for the average traveler, but #avgeeks will rejoice at the sight of it.

Gross. 'Travel + Leisure' Delves Into America's Filthiest Cities

June 20, 2011 at 11:41 AM | by | Comments (0)

One of the biggest travel turn-offs is a filthy city. Having to walk through stanky, trash-strewn streets really puts a damper on the whole sightseeing experience. Travel + Leisure compiled a list of America's dirtiest cities, and a number of popular party places topped the charts, with New Orleans grabbing the No. 1 award for grossness.

It's not a big surprise that the Big Easy is a Big Hot Mess; tourists flood places like Bourbon Street for Mardi Gras and leave loads of garbage, beads, alcohol and other undesirable leftovers all over the place. The mag put Philly in the No. 2 sloppy slot, and apparently it narrowly missed winning the dirty champion title.

Singapore Airlines' Newest Advance: Browsing Magazines on Your Seatback TV

May 10, 2011 at 11:47 AM | by | Comments (0)

Giant TV screens in Singapore's biz class

Let's make a list of all the cool stuff happening in in-flight entertainment right now, shall we? There's in-flight WiFi (of course), satellite TV, seat-to-seat messaging, touchscreen menu ordering, and even the upcoming possibility to stream content directly to your personal devices. What's next? If you ask Singapore Airlines, the answer to that is evolving and adding content to these developments.

The newest advance from Singapore—an airline that's consistently at the forefront of commercial aviation innovation—is the e-magazine, a world's first for what it does. According to CnnGo, Singapore will introduce new channels to their seatback TVs, channels which will allow you to flip through "a selection of 20 international titles including The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek, Wall Street Journal Magazine, Prestige and Elle." Pages will display in high-res for realistic browsing, without the need to physically flip paper pages and carry bulky magazines onboard.

Don't Check the Seatback; These Airline In-Flight Magazines are on Your iPad

March 24, 2011 at 10:01 AM | by | Comments (0)

Pay attention, because you may never hear us admit this again: in-flight magazines aren't all that bad. Actually, some are quite good! We've been known to actually take them home and read the articles or—gasp—rip out pages and magnet them to our fridge for future reference. If you're a closet fan of in-flight magazines like we are, then this is your time, friend; more and more airlines are moving their print rags to be in more than just your seat-back pocket, but in your iPad too (and iPad 2).

Here's the airlines and their iTunes-downloadable iPad magazines:

United/Continental Hemispheres: This is the newest player on the scene, as the merger airline only launched their iPad version earlier this month. March is the first issue, featuring the Mexican Riviera and Peru's culinary scene. Happily it makes great use of iPad's interactive features, allowing for 360-degree image views, videos and direct links to buy advertised products (of course advertised creatively). Hemisphere is free to download direct from iTunes HERE.

The Best Thing on 'The Daily,' the new iPad Newspaper, May Be the Travel Ads

February 3, 2011 at 4:02 PM | by | Comments (0)

Have you read The Daily yet? Jeez—it seems like everyone has already, and yet it's only been out for one day. The Daily is the first virtual newspaper produced specifically for the iPad. No, it's not free; the venture is bankrolled by News Corp and subscriptions cost $0.99 per week, or $39.99 for a year. Considering the fact that, if you have an iPad, you can pretty much get all your news for free from the internet, many are wondering if The Daily will succeed. For upscale travel brands, however, it's a possible goldmine.

The first airline (and indeed, first big travel brand) to hop onboard The Daily is Virgin Atlantic, who helped the launch make a big splash with their interactive ad, taking the reader into the world of their Upper Class flying experience. Their glossy ads move and unveil many layers; you can't quite tickle the hot girl luxuriating in the Upper Class London-Heathrow Clubhouse, but that doesn't stop you from wanting to. The potential is great; who wouldn't want to take a little ad tour of an Emirates First Class cabin? Or maybe play a little mini FlightControl-inspired game where you can land ANA planes at Tokyo-Haneda? Our mind reels.

The Top 20 Rudest Cities in America are...

January 21, 2011 at 9:22 AM | by | Comment (1)

Okay, so if you didn't hear (because who reads print magazines these days, amirite?), Los Angeles was ranked by Travel + Leisure as being the rudest city in America. No, not New York—Los Angeles. Let's hear it for traffic on the 405!

The feature comes as part of T+L's annual "Favorite Cities Survey," which asks readers to rank 35 cities on 54 features, "including affordable hotels, great restaurants, romance potential, and the overall personality of the locals." Los Angeles even managed to pass Las Vegas with its stoney-faced bouncers, Dallas with its hardcore conservatives and Boston with its die-hard sports fans. Rest assured, however, that New York still claims pride of place at #2, although we beg to disagree that it even should go that high on the list. If only everyone would just walk faster...

Travel and Leisure Releases a Free Digital Edition for iPad, and It's Actually Pretty Awesome

November 2, 2010 at 12:55 PM | by | Comments (0)

Who's got an iPad on their Christmas list? We'd say that about half the Jaunted team has caved and sprung for one already, but the rest of us are still kicking it old school with actual books and select print publications. Unfortunately, travel magazines have been crossed off our lists for some time, purely because they've gotten so thin these days and there's so much regurgitation (how many years has "The world's best hot springs" or "Top Ten Islands" been done?).

As glossy and pretty as they appear on the shelves, we just can't throw another $6 mag into our recycling pile. Nonetheless, the idea of digital travel magazines is turning the tides; we'd read 'em!

One of the first travel magazines to go iPad is Travel + Leisure, who just today released a digital issue, focusing on Holiday Travel in particular. This one is totally free, though they plan to continue with digital issues in 2011, with each priced at $3.99, which is 20% cheaper than the print mag.

Found: The Creepiest SkyMall Product Ever

July 21, 2010 at 8:27 AM | by | Comments (0)

We were stuck on the runway for a long time in PHX last week because, no joke, "the wind keeps changing." Out of boredom we ended up flipping through a SkyMall. We shouldn't have, we know, but we did. Herein is a brief walk through our thought process, which culminates in one of those what has been seen cannot be unseen moments, when we turned the page to find the "Cherish" Lifelike Baby Doll, aka the creepiest SkyMall product ever.

Keep in mind that SkyMall essentially makes it pitch to you to buy this product while you're on an airplane and perhaps feeling lonely.

'Bon Appétit' Magazine Cooks Up Epicurean Excursions

December 8, 2009 at 8:49 AM | by | Comment (1)

This boat will bring you to Tuscany and the South of France for some chow.

Foodies might want to start storing away their dough. Signature Travel Network and Bon Appétit are pairing to offer luxe culinary trips for 2010.

Although details of the food-centric series are still being hashed out, all of the trips will be culinary immersion experiences. You'll learn about a destination through your stomach by taking hands-on cooking classes, attending tastings, touring the private galley with ship's chefs and chowing down at wine-and-food-pairing dinners. But of course, you'll also learn about the destination by actually visiting the place.

The Adventure Comes to an End as National Geographic Folds Outdoorsy Spinoff

December 5, 2009 at 3:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

National Geographic Adventure magazine has published its last issue, bowing to competitive pressures that have shuttered dozens of magazines in 2009. According to news reports, they tried to sell the title, but wouldn't part with the National Geographic part of the name, and nobody wanted to buy a magazine simply called Adventure.

What Is Going On At Budget Travel Magazine?

November 16, 2009 at 5:34 PM | by | Comments (0)

After the recent chopping of magazines like Gourmet, it's safe to say that print media is beyond shaking in their boots; they're already cleaning out desks. The latest magazine closure scare came at Budget Travel, formerly under Arthur Frommer's wing but now controlled by the Washington Post Co.

On Friday, rumors began that the magazine would announce its closure on Monday (today). NY Mag reached Editor-In-Chief Nina Willdorf for comments only to receive a cryptic "heading out town"-type response.

Instead of closing today, it was only reported that "it's business as usual," but execs did hold a meeting to discuss the future of the magazine. Although it looks like no one lost their jobs today, employees in ad sales were told to hold on the February issues. Will the scythe of death fall on Budget Travel in January 2010, or—even worse—around the holidays? Rest assured that we'll continue to follow this story.

Virgin America, Singapore Airlines Take Tops In Condé Nast Traveler Awards

October 16, 2009 at 9:50 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last night in New York (the unfriendliest city in the nation, according to results), Condé Nast Traveler held the awards reception for their 2009 Readers Choice Awards, hosted by Stanley Tucci and Mary Louise Parker and seeing big wigs like Richard Branson and David Cush (of Virgin America) in attendance.

This year, 25,000 of CN Traveler's readers voted for their favorites in such categories as best cruise line, best Asian city, and even top car rental agencies. While with some winners, we wonder how they even got on the ballot (Capri is one of the best European islands? Maybe 20 years ago), we absolutely saw no competition for some of the winners (Singapore Airlines took tops in international airlines again}.

While reading the winners after the jump, keep in mind that Traveler's demographic skews a bit older and affluent, so seeing the Hotel du Palais in Biarritz take Top European Resort even though it feels like no one's been there in eighty years is not so surprising, as is the fact that the Four Seasons positively cleaned up in some hotel categories.
