Five Ways To Top Off Your Frequent Flyer Miles Without Leaving The Ground

November 5, 2009 at 9:44 AM | by kjb | 0 Comments

We all have some frequent flyer miles hanging around in various accounts, but it seems like there’s never enough to finally book that award ticket to paradise. Well we’re here to help: we’ve compiled five of the best ways to top off your mileage account and gain some extra miles without even leaving the ground. Everyone wants to be able to make it rain with excess miles, and with a little work and creativity, you’ll be doing just that.

· Get Something To Eat:
Most airlines have programs where linking a credit card to a dining program awards you with airline miles when you hit up your favorite restaurant. Obviously it’s not every restaurant out there, so your favorite Applebee’s might be out of the picture. However, if you find a couple favorite spots you frequent anyway, it will be worth the minimal effort to get the bonus. AAdvantage Dining will give you five miles for every dollar you spend, and you’ll even get 1,500 bonus miles for signing up and spending $25. If you prefer Delta-flavored miles check out SkyMiles Dining. It’s the same deal: five miles per dollar spent and certain establishments will reward you with double miles.

Found a Cheap Ticket? Now All You Need is a Hotel Room

November 3, 2009 at 5:19 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Omni Hotel San Diego.

Last week was a bit of an airline fare war bonanza with Virgin America, Southwest and even American Airlines launching some steeply discounted airfares. But getting your ticket is only 1/2 of your vacation planning, unless you plan on shacking up with some friends and family.

If you aren't, then you're probably going to need a hotel room. This is where Omni Hotels comes in. The hotel chain has just announced a limited offer of 40 percent off hotels in destination that were recently featured last week in the fare wars.

That means that Omni Hotels in Austin, Chicago, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Diego, New Orleans, San Antonio, Houston and Tucson are all discounted (some up to 40 percent) for stays between Dec. 2 and February 10, 2010.

The Fine Print: You must book before November 5. Yup it's a quick 72-hour sale. It's also subject to availability and the one black-out date is December 31st.

Fly To Ireland And Chill In Your Own Private Villa For 6 Days For $499

Where: Ireland
October 30, 2009 at 2:54 PM | by Jennifer Kester | 0 Comments

Get ready to chug some Guinness: Travelzoo's offering an Ireland package for $499 that includes round-trip airfare, six nights' accommodations on the grounds of a castle and a car rental for you to go exploring the western parts of the Emerald Isle.

The flight takes you to Shannon, in County Clare. Then you'll head to Limerick, where you and three of your buds (the package is based on four travelers) can crash in a three-bedroom private villa on the grounds of Adare Manor, a historic Irish castle that was just named one of the top three resorts in Europe by the 2009 Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards. You'll also get a full-sized car to shuttle you around the nearby sites, such as Galway, Killarney, the Cliffs of Moher and the Blarney Castle. But brush up on driving stick, or learn how to do it, since these rides won't be automatic.

Hate Paying A Lot (Or At All) For Rental Cars? This Contest Is For You

October 26, 2009 at 11:04 AM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

Alright, so we might be winging our way to St. Lucia right now Jetblue, but we swear they didn't tell us to tell you about this contest; that's just what we do—pass on news about free travel stuff to you. And you might want to consider entering the airline's new "Jet & Drive Giveaway," if you like the idea of possibly winning free travel.

The contest, which just barely began and runs through January 31, 2010, is the fruit of a partnership between Jetblue and Hertz, and Marriott and Starwood to a lesser extent. The deal is: you enter your info on their contest page and the page keeps a running tally on how many have entered. Each day, Jetblue will give away a $100 Hertz certificate, but if the day's tally manages to pass 2,500 or even 5,000, then they'll tack on giveaways of a $2500 Hertz certificate and a $500 Jetblue gift card, respectively. But the prizes just get sweeter from there...

It's Friday; Go Ahead And Daydream About 5 Nights In Hawaii For $499

October 23, 2009 at 9:14 AM | by Jennifer Kester | 0 Comments

Whenever we're stressed and have to go to our happy place, we picture the beaches of Hawaii. But now, probably thanks to how hard the recession has hit tourism to the islands, everyone has a chance to actually go there, thanks to Travelzoo's $499-for-five-Hawaiian-nights package.

The deal includes round-trip airfare to Honolulu, where you'll be greeted with a lovely-smelling lei and thus the right to brag that you got "lei'd" in Hawaii, like tourists do for days after their arrival. Your accommodations will be at the Castle Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki. And if you want to upgrade to an ocean-view pad, the hotel gives you the option for $25 and up per person.

Get Comfy En Route Down Under With Qantas' Biz Class Sale

Where: Australia
October 21, 2009 at 9:23 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

Australia seems like a long way from just about everywhere, right? (Maybe not from New Zealand!). So if you want to get there in a bit of comfort, it would be great to splash out on a business class seat. Aussie airline Qantas wants to make this financially easier for us for a while, with a 40% off sale on business class seats from Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York down to Sydney or Brisbane.

Business class is certainly a nicer way to travel on those long, long-haul flights, although the funny thing is that Qantas claims to have invented business class back in 1979; if you prefer to believe Wikipedia, it was actually British Caledonian in 1978.

Six Nights In Prague Over Thanksgiving For $669? See Ya, America!

October 20, 2009 at 9:34 AM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

Are you a last-minute planner when it comes to big holiday travel times like Thanksgiving in Christmas? Yes, we are too, especially because everything looks so darn expensive and plain booked up. This year, it's either another Thanksgiving of ordering Chinese takeout or booking it out of the country for some autumn appeal overseas...like in Prague.

Remember that it's not Thanksgiving over in the Czech Republic, so that means no dinner reservations or pressure to eat cranberry sauce. Virgin Vacations seems to have the best deal we've seen for this, with a 6-night hotel, airfare, and daily breakfast starting at $669 per person. Sure they have other deals for Thanksgiving to Barcelona, London, Paris and Rome, but the Prague trip sounds like the most fall foliage and old school charm for the lowest price.

Virgin America To Offer Free WiFi Over Two Months For Holiday Travel

October 19, 2009 at 12:10 PM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

Hurrah! Big news that could be game-changing for holiday travel plans, if you aren't already put off by the extra fees being levied on holiday flights by some airlines. Just announced today, Virgin America is making their in-flight WiFi—which they have on all of their airplanes and routes—free during the holidays.

Actually the deal extends a bit beyond the holidays to somewhat reward passengers for even choosing VA at all during this season: "From Nov. 10, 2009-Jan. 15, 2010, guests on all Virgin America flights will be able to check email, gift shop online, stay in touch with family and friends via social media, or just go wherever the web takes them – all for free." Virgin's WiFi provider is Gogo, who usually charges between $5.95-$12.95 for access during a flight. Whether this added tech bonus plus the lack of extra "holiday fees" on Virgin America tickets persuades the leagues of winter flyers to change to Virgin from their usual Christmas carrier remains to be seen. Still—free in-flight WiFi all around!

Air Asia's Big Sale Makes Us Want To Book Some $17 Flights

October 19, 2009 at 9:13 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

One of our favorite low cost carriers, Air Asia, is not just cool because it keeps adding more routes—like Kuala Lumpur to Paris on the cheap and the Indian destinations like Thiruvananthapuram just to name a couple of last week's highlights—but it's also giving us ideas for our 2010 travel plans by holding a big airfare sale at the moment.

For bookings made between now and Sunday, you can get bargain tickets for travel between January 11 and April 30, 2010 for a bunch of Asian routes. The cheapest flights get as low as 19 Ringgit ($5.50) but they're mostly internal Malaysian flights; to get from Kuala Lumpur to further afield, there are deals like KL to pretty much anywhere in Indonesia or Thailand for 59 Ringgit ($17) and KL to Australian destinations for 199 Ringgit ($58). Get booking fast or we might snap up all the seats first.

Escape Cold Temps On Spain's Costa del Sol For 5 Nights At $499

October 16, 2009 at 3:11 PM | by Jennifer Kester | 1 Comment

When January comes around with its hella freezing weather, you'll be dreaming of sunny beaches; shoot, we're doing that now. To prevent seasonal affective disorder, you'll need a dose of Costa del Sol, or "Coast of the Sun." According to Travelzoo, the beachfront locale has more than 300 days of sunshine each year. The company's offering a package to the Spanish coastal region along the Mediterranean for $499, which includes a five-night vacay with airfare, but you have to book by Oct. 28.

The deal includes round-trip airfare from NYC to Malaga, Spain. You'll also spend five nights at either Sol Principe or Cervantes, both of which are four-star hotels. If you opt for Cervantes, you'll get free breakfast daily. And if you're the type to tire from frolicking on the beach all day—crazy talk, we know—you can add day tours to Cordoba, Granada or Tangier to the package for an additional $71 to $91.

Ryanair Throws Huge Hissy Fit In Response To BBC Expose

October 15, 2009 at 2:08 PM | by Omri | 0 Comments

Ryanair is in a very public, very heated, very crazy delicious feud with the BBC. The low cost carrier has taken exception to a BBC Panorama expose unpacking the airline's complex nickle and dime strategy for extracting airline fees. In response, Ryanair's the-customer-is-always-wrong CEO Michael O'Leary has blasted the program and unveiled a 1.1 million seat giveaway.

We were surprised Ryanair reacted so negatively to a discussion of their opaque fees. Usually they're so much more confident. Just a few weeks ago they were blustering about how their customers were free to explore other options if they had problems with the airline.

This is a company that's made a business model of brazenly abusing passengers, the implicit justification being that any alienated customers could always be replaced by other bargain seekers. "You'll take our abuse because you value your wallet more than your self-esteem" is practically the company's sneering motto.
