Touring California in 1964: Ending Up at the 'Showplace of the Nation'
Thanks to the decreasing quality and increasing frustration of air travel, plus shows like ABC's Pan Am, 2011 has been a year for much interest in the heyday of "glamorous" travelaka the dawn of the Jet Age.
We've already spent some time investigating a 1960s in-flight menu from United, ticket prices on American and even the airline back in 1959, but now we're going to focus on TWA for a moment.
In the 1960s, if you wanted to take a 12-day tour of California including flights from either Chicago or NYC, the cost was only $279 or $339, respectively. That's crazy to think of now, but although prices have changed, the travel style really hasn't all that much. This week, we'll be peeking inside a brochure for this trip, to see exactly what you could get for that cash in 1964:

Headphones On: Miami's South Beach Now Has Its Own Audio Tour

Models steal children, tell story about 'uncle Gianni'.
It's easy to think that everyone knows the stories that make South Beach the glitzy, sleazy, underdressed spectacle it is, but luckily a brand new company, Discovery Miami Beach, has come along to educate the uninitiated with a new self-guided audio tourone that 'showcases 29 of the most important places in South Beach’s past and present.'
Of course, this includes a stop outside the Versace Mansion--now known as The Villa By Barton G. You can't go inside unless you want to have a very fancy meal or rest your head on a $1,000-a-night pillow, but you can take a peek at the photos our sister site HotelChatter snapped beyond the gate last fall.
As for the story about how Gianni was slain right there on the steps along Ocean Drive--how's that for education, kids?!

Avoid Standing Next to Sweaty Strangers on the Tube with a London Bike Tour
A cyclist heading up Regent's Canal on a sunny day in London
Underground, bus, and ridiculously pricey black cabs are the three most common modes of transport for visitors to London, but they're certainly not always the most pleasant. If you've ever stood cheek-to-cheek next to a sweaty stranger on the tube, taken a night bus full of drunken teens back to your hotel, or shelled out upward of £30.00 for a taxi ride across town, surely you understand.
But, what you'll also notice on London's streets are a bevy of cyclists, mainly locals, taking advantage of the city's many bike-friendly pathways and routes. Tourists hoping to do the same can rent a Boris bike and make their way around Hyde Park or Regent's Canal, feeling the burn in the process.

London Restaurant Festival Rails Against the City's Middling Culinary Rep
The London Restaurant Festival's Gourmet Odyssey bus won't be stopping at any soggy fish 'n' chip joints
We vacillate between taking obvious, stereotype-driven jabs at London's cuisine—for good reason, oftentimes—and bringing you pleasantly surprised reports from the city's gastronomic field. The rise of chefs such as Heston Blumenthal and Marcus Wareing and the opening of respectable restaurants in recent years notwithstanding, London still suffers from a middling culinary reputation. Yet, the city's gastronomes soldier on, endeavoring to ensure that soggy fish 'n' chips don't define its fare.

Grab Your Trainers: Walk 20 Miles to See London's Best Architecture by Night
With the pending completion of The Shard London Bridge, London's architectural landscape continues to transcend its Tudor and Victorian roots. From The Gherkin to London City Hall, many an impressive modern landmark is sprinkled throughout the city, with more surely to arise leading up to and in the wake of next year's Olympic ceremonies.
If Westminster Abbey and Big Ben are your only frame of architectural reference for The Square Mile, then taking advantage of events associated with OpenHouse London will prove eye opening in more ways than one. Taking place this weekend, September 17th and 18th, the two day event offers visitors the opportunity to tour "major regeneration projects, landscape projects, government buildings…and more," all for free.

San Francisco Tries on a Levi's Tour; Twitter HQ May Be Next
Forget boat tours, architecture tours or neighborhood tours. It looks like the new tour to take is one of company headquarters. San Francisco Travel Association has turned Levi's HQ into a tourist attraction with tours, contests and other promotions around the jeans-maker, and Twitter may be next, according to SFist.
Perusing creative, entrepreneurial workspaces seems to be a new tourist trend. New York has delved into the HQ tour racket with Walkabout NYC. It's a DIY tour of technology startups; Walkabout sets the date and times that companies like Foursquare, Thrillist, Meetup and Gawker Media will open their doors. The next free tour is June 10.

New York May Loose all its Tourist Helicopters, if Brooklyn Gets Its Way

Army helicopters follow President Obama's copter off the Wall Street helipad
There once was a timenot too long ago at allwhen booking a tourist helicopter trip over New York harbor and around the Statue of Liberty was part of the usual Big Apple must-dos. Everything really changed, however, when an Italian tourist family was killed in summer 2009 after their helicopter collided with a small private plane over the Hudson River. Following this tragedy, more air traffic rules over water went into place and the 30th Street Heliport was closed to tourist traffic, although this latter development was mostly due to neighborhood noise complaints.
It's noise complaints that could continue to kill tourist helicopter flights over the city, as Brooklyn residents target the Wall Street heliportthe last Manhattan heliport offering quickie sightseeing flights. Thus far there's been rallies and petitions, but the choppers continue.

Virgin Galactic's Spaceport America Opens to Public for Three-Hour Tours
Planning to hit happy hour tonight after work? We have something for toast to: the opening of Spaceport America, which represents yet another step closer to making space tourism a possibility. The Spaceport, located in the Mojave Desert in New MexicoAlbuquerque is 150 miles to the southonly just completed its runway in October and is already open for public tours.
This comes at the most opportune time; just as the sun is going down on the NASA space program and the space shuttles retired, Virgin Galactic's new wave spaceships enter the spotlight.
The AP has the news first, of course, that Virgin Galactic's facilities will host the first tour this Friday, a tour aimed at "giving guests an up close look at the spaceflight facilities before operations begin," which is later this year if all continues to go according to plan.
