Airlines Actually Increase Checked Bag Limits, Thanks to the 'Piece System'

May 14, 2012 at 9:32 AM | by | Comments (2)

With all of the drama and outrage about certain airlines decreasing baggage limits, charging for extra baggage, and even (over)charging for carry-on baggage, here is a story that make you feel excited to fly. Yes, Virginia, there is happiness in flying.

Believe it or not, there are airlines that don't nickle and dime their passengers by charging to check a bag in the belly of the plane. And there are even airlines that have chosen to get even more liberal with how much they allow you to stuff in one suitcase. Or even up to three suitcases. We can't be more excited for these new rules.

Peeking into Wings Bar, the Zurich Pub That Thinks It's a Swiss Airplane

Where: Limmatquai 54, Zurich, Switzerland
July 12, 2011 at 4:40 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's a Swiss bar that looks like a plane! Or is it...a Swiss plane that looks like a bar? Oh c'mon you know it's the former, and you can step right into it yourself for a drink when you're next in Zurich, Switzerland. It's surprisingly easy to find, too; located on the main street along the River Limmat, Limmatquai, Wings Bar is a perfect spot for attracting regular folks and not just avgeeks.

Inside, the decor is proper Swiss Air red and white, which makes sense seeing as how the owners are former Swiss crew, who opened the place back in 2001 after Swiss Air went bankrupt and sold off some goodies at auction. You'll find those goodies tucked around the place; there's real airline seats here and there, fronted by cocktail tables for enjoying a drink from their rather large menu.

The Hottest New Airline Routes For 2010, Plus 36 From easyJet

December 14, 2009 at 9:39 AM | by | Comments (0)

While we're busy speculating on what destinations are next up for Virgin America, here's the need-to-know new routes coming your way:

· easyJet is expanding for summer 2010 on an astonishing 36 new routes. After all, they've got pale Britons to get to the sunny spots! The complete, drool-worthy list is here, but a few highlights are: Basel – Thessaloniki, Rome Fiumicino – Dubrovnik, Ibiza – Venice, Paris Orly – Mykonos and Doncaster – Prague.

· Iceland Express is an LCC we've had our eyes on now for some time, and starting in summer 2010, they'll be flying our way—a few miles away to be more specific, since Newark to Reykjavik is totally happening. Rest assured that we'll be all over this like syrup on some pecan pancakes.

But wait! There's four more...

We Have Never Wanted Anything More Than Swiss Air First Class

February 20, 2009 at 3:50 PM | by | Comments (0)

Just as we were gushing over the digs in the First Class cabins on Cathay Pacific, Swiss Air was readying for the launch of their own redesigned lookers. Luckily for daydreaming economy-fliers everywhere, Wallpaper snuck a peek at the new first class suites, which are being hailed for their clean lines and consideration of space for a full-size adult. Forget those dinky seat-back TV screens with Swiss, as they've introduced 23" flatscreens and enough space to actually stretch out and attempt to enjoy whatever third-rate movies are on offer.

Sleeping Soundly on Swiss

June 2, 2008 at 9:15 AM | by | Comments (0)

We love to daydream about the ultimate airline seat--the one that actually enables us to sleep well. Swiss Air has just announced a new version of a fully-flat seat for business class that looks like it might do the trick.

By 2011, all of Swiss Air's long haul flights will have these six-foot-plus long "beds" installed, with a pretty clever design that saves space by having a passenger's feet fitting into a cut-out of the seat in front.

They're also replacing conventional foam with an air cushion filling that you can easily adjust to be either firm or soft. We'd be happy to have that at home, too!

For green fans, the new seats have one more bonus--each one is 9 pounds lighter so the planes will be cheaper to fly, saving 2,000 tons of CO2 emissions a year. Comfortable seats that save the planet? We always knew those Swiss could do more than just make great chocolate.
