How You Can Help Helsinki Airport...via Pinterest

So Helsinki Airport is going to open a library or, rather, a "book swap." Typically we wouldn't hear about this until the book swap officially opens to the public, but the advance warning comes courtesy of Helsinki AIrport's surprise obsession with social sharing network Pinterest.

HERE is Helsinki Airport's book swap board, where they are "pinning" actual decisions for their book swap, as well soliciting comments and additional inspiration to polish out the program. From whom? From you, if you're on Pinterest and at all intrigued by the idea of helping shape a space where travelers can come for their literary fix. Want to review the floor plan? It's there. Their possible QR-coded book plates? It's there. Lots of other library porn? Oh yeah—it's there.

Foursquare Drops Eight New International City Badges, from Rio to Doha

First row: Bangkok, Mexico City, Doha, Santiago. Second row: Jakarta, Rio, Minneapolis, St. Paul.

Yet more international city badges have just dropped, in time for your summer travels! Location-based social network Foursquare is deep into the city badge awarding, and the last week has seen eight new ones, for your checking-in pleasure.

These newest city badges go to Mexico City, Minneapolis and St. Paul in North America; Rio and Santiago in South America; Bangkok and Jakarta in Asia; and Doha in the Middle East.

How to get the badges: First, follow 4sqCities, and just to be safe, it wouldn't hurt to also follow the individual city lists: Rio (list); Bangkok (list); Jakarta (list); Doha (list); Mexico City (list); Santiago (list); Minneapolis (list); and St. Paul (list). Then travel to the cities and clickety-click to check-in to the places on the recommended lists. Five places earns the badge.

The Most Popular Airports for Memorial Day, According to Foursquare

Are you psyched for Memorial Day yet? It's Monday, May 28, in case you hadn't yet penciled it into your iCal, and with the nice weather the US has had so far, it's going to be a doozy for traveling.

We know Foursquare is already beyond excited. The location-based social networking app is bracing for all the airport, airplane, turnpike, backyard BBQ and lobster shack check-ins that are sure to come from the long holiday weekend, and they've just shared with us the most popular airport (and other travel centers) from past Memorial Days, including the most checked-into city pairs!

Get Inside Cathay Pacific's New SFO Lounge, No Matter Your Airline, with a Little 'Klout'

What's your Klout score? Wait—don't groan at the question, because finally Klout—the social media influence measurement index or whatever—is useful for something other than sounding super douchey when talking about your "online presence."

You see, Klout just launched an iPhone app. It's free to download and you can do so here, straight from the iTunes store. With this app, you can gain access to Cathay Pacific's new SFO First & Business Class lounge, no matter what airline you're flying or class you're traveling.. The only catch? You've got to have at least a Klout score of 40, and you've got to be traveling from the "A" boarding gates at SFO (list of airlines below).

Not only is this a freaking brilliant idea, but it's going to spoil whoever opts to check it out, since the SFO lounge (Cathay's only lounge in the entire United States), has computer workstations, three shower suites, a noodle bar (featuring the famous Dan dan mien), a booze bar, modern seating areas and free WiFi.

CityJet's 'European Challenge' is a Barcode Scavenger Hunt for Free Flights

CityJet is known for their quick flights in and around Europe, as well as their ability to fly to and from some of the region’s more convenient airports—like London City Airport. Apparently the secret about the convenience of CityJet just hasn’t quite reached the masses yet, as the airline is looking to do a little promotion through a travel contest.

Of course social media is involved, so you’re going to need a fully charged smartphone to get in on the chance to win. It’s kind of like a real life scavenger hunt—but with electronic prizes—as the carrier has hidden a whole bunch of Quick Response codes at airports across their network. You’ve seen these fancy barcodes before, as you usually give them a scan to learn more information about something or even score a discount or a coupon. However, this time it’s more about finding, collecting, and registering them for a chance to win.

The Facebook Cover Photos of 17 Airlines

Now that everyone has been forced into adopting the new Facebook timeline layout, the addition of a "cover photo" has had brands rethinking their image presentation. This seems to be pretty difficult for airlines, as many just left the cover photo decision up to a poll.

What's emerged are a couple types of airline Facebook cover shot: plane from a dramatic angle, alluring flight attendants, and the airline's name as large as possible. Air Asia X Wants to Fly You and 301 of Your Friends to Malaysia, for Free

The Kuala Lumpur-based airline is sending out a call for their latest contest, Friendsy, for one person to win a flight from Sydney, Australia to the Malaysian capital. Sounds like a normal contest, but not so fast. Here is the twist: you can elect up to 302 Facebook friends to fly with you.

Only Facebook fans of the airline can enter to win the dream trip. Once you put together the ultimate travel group, you and your buddies will fly in your very own Airbus A330. Don't worry if you cannot find that amount of people with whom you are willing to travel; the empty seats will not be sold to the public.

Let's Talk About Tripadvisor's 'Friend of a Friend' Thing for a Sec

Not only have some travel companies ignored our advice and rushed to develop Facbeook applications even though their business models have nothing to do with social media, but now there are entire sub-industries devoted that nonsense. We have no idea how that happened, or why people are building startups on the assumption that you're going to share your travel details with the friends of your friends, but apparently the era of "social travel" has arrived. For at least the next few months.

"There is a trust forged in that tribal mentality that traditional travel companies or guides can't tap into," says one startup entrepreneur in New York City, who suggests that people will go where their online friends tell them to. That's an interesting point inasmuch as, first, we don't exactly know what it means ("tribal mentality"?) and, second, it's almost certainly untrue.

Amsterdam's So Hot Right Now: New Foursquare Badge and Floriade 2012

Pay attention for a second. There are two things you need today. Like, right now. And they're both about the Netherlands.

First, today marks the beginning of the Floriade, a massive festival of—you guessed it—flowers. The Holland Floriade only comes around every 10 years, so this World Horticultural Festival hasn't happened since 2002. It's not in Amsterdam actually, but near the German border in the Dutch town of Venlo. There you'll find themed mini-worlds (like the real World Expo), 100+ gardens, acrobatic shows, green architecture and technology exhibits, plus Europe's biggest indoor flower show.

There's no need to rush, so long as you hit the Floriade before it closes on October 7. The high summer will of course be the busiest time, but we'd imagine that September could be ideal. Here's the official site.

Today we celebrate our 100th Instagram photo with the above shot of a Delta 747 parked at one of our favorite terminals in the world: McNamara at Detroit-Metro. It's been an awesome three months, sharing our more personal travel photos with you; these are the things you won't see here on the site, and often as they happen.
