What a Weekend! Updates on Qantas, Air France and the Freak Thundersnowstorm

Wow. This last weekend was not commercial aviation's finest hour whatsoever. In fact, one could say it was a farce! Three events contributed to the stranding of thousands of travelers and the cancellations of flights originating from places as wide-ranging as Australia and Hartford, CT.

Today, air traffic should be running more smoothly, and here's the latest updates on each situation:

· The Qantas shutdown: Confrontations between the Australian airline and its labor unions reached such a level that Qantas CEO Alan Joyce shut down all Qantas mainline flight operations on Saturday, shutting out employees. Passengers boarding onto Qantas planes at the time were told to return to the terminal, and other airlines (mainly V Australia, Singapore Airlines, Etihad and Air New Zealand) mobilized to run extra planes, special routes and limited pricing to essentially rescue the stranded.

What's a traveler to do when they've got more than enough days in a foreign city? Day trip! If you've been following us on Twitter and Foursquare, then you're already tuned in to the fact that we've been chillaxing in the still chilly temps of Switzerland—Zürich, to be more exact.

We're probably the last people to be able to turn down a great airline deal, so yea; here were are in Switzerland on the first day of Spring and looking for adventure. What to do? We contemplated hopping over to the medieval town of Feldkirch, Austria and then going from there to get a fancy passport stamp in Liechtenstein. But we'd already done that before, even if it was a whole passport ago. Maybe we'd try to hit a Swiss ski town...Zermatt? St. Moritz? Davos? Spending Monday afternoon in front of a fireplace at a lodge with caffè corretto in hand sounded awesome. But...

In Defense of the Window Seat

Trust us for a sec; we totally get why you'd want to have an aisle seat on an international flight (easy to get up and stretch, elbow room, etc), but we're personally huge fans of the window seat. Maybe it's because the world looks so cool—like a real-life Google Earth—from above, or maybe it's because we just like being able to lean against the window and drool an something that isn't a strangers shoulder. Still, there's much to be said for the window seat.

For example, this amazing view, taken while landing at Milan-Malpensa Airport. Indeed those are the Alps in the distance, although they don't seem too distant when you're flying just a bit above them, with a perfect view directly down into ski villages, hopping with the rich at this time of the year.

We don't have to tell you this, but Chicago is at a complete standstill right now thanks to the 20+ inches of snow dumped on the city last night. An honorable mention goes to the scary high winds, which have managed to make those 20 inches seem like mini-mountains in some areas, and chill potential pedestrians enough as to send them running back inside. The Windy City is, today, the Windy-and-Hopelessly-Snowed-In City.

Just in case you were wondering, Chicago-O'Hare Airport is closed and Chicago-Midway is operating on a very limited basis. If you have a flight out of or into any US airport, please check your flight status; FlightStats is a good site for doing so. Unfortunately, the 6,429 total flight cancellations thus far today are having system-wide effects, so even if you're just hopping from Florida to a Caribbean island, your plane may not have made it down to pick you up.

Three of 2011's Best Winter Festivals, Plus the World's Largest Ice Skating Rink

Sure it’s pretty chilly outside and the snow keeps falling from the sky, but that doesn’t mean that you need to totally dismiss winter as the worst season. There are plenty of positives to the snow and cold, so here’s three festivals that want to show you how great things can be:

· Saint Paul Winter Carnival:
If there’s one state that’s known for its winter weather it’s Minnesota, so it’s no surprise that one half of the Twin Cities is a great place to celebrate the season. The Saint Paul Winter Carnival kicks off this weekend and runs through February 6. Dubbed "the coolest celebration on earth," the festival features activities only found in the dead of winter, and they know what they’re doing as this thing has been running for over 100 years.

The ice carving competition happens this weekend from January 27 through 30, and there will be public ice skating opportunities each and every day of the festival at Landmark Center. For those that would rather carve things out of snow, there’s even separate snow sculpting events. Other features include an autonomous snowplow competition where college kids build snowplowing, ice-busting robots that run through a designated course. Of course no festival could be complete without a parade, so be sure to bundle up before hitting the parade route.

Heard the news? A few ago, the news pointed out that 49 out of the 50 states now have snow on the ground. But instead of getting all indignant and eye-rolling at Florida (the only snowflake survivor), take advantage of January’s National Learn a Snow Sport Month and get out there.

A Little Baggie May Save Your Smartphone from Death By Snow

We dropped our iPhone into a pool by accident recently. It sucked, to say the least. However, with some quick thinking and a $3 bag of rice bought from the corner store no more than 5 minutes later, we managed to save it. Then, while walking and tweeting as the wet and heavy snow came down in New York City last night, we wondered how much more precipitation our phone could take. Today, we think we'll have to stop living on the edge and just do the nerdy thing and buy a protective covering during these heavy weather months, and CleverWraps look like the winner.

Essentially they're just sealable plastic baggies tailored to three different sizes, the better to fit a variety of phone types (from iPhones to Droids to old-school Razrs and other flips). But if you're out walking and texting in the snow and you drop your phone in slush or pocket it into even semi-soggy clothing, this little plastic film could be the difference between shelling out hundreds more on a new phone or keeping with your current one.

Survive 2011's First Airport Snowpocalypse with These Jaunted Guides

Prepare for delays if, over the next few days, you're traveling...well, anywhere. Atlanta is of course functionally offline, with AirTran canceling ATL flights for the first time since 9/11 and even UPS halting traffic into the airport.

The rest of the South is doing only slightly better, with Alabama airports in huge trouble and Chattanooga flights getting scrubbed through tomorrow. States of emergency are in effect across the South, and there are snow flurries hitting airports as far west as Dallas/Fort Worth.

Rebook Your Cancelled Atlanta Flights with Twitter or Delta's Updated iPhone App

Winter weather strikes again! At least this time, it's not New York or Boston that are suffering flight cancellations up the wazoo; it's Atlanta...and a couple other southern US cities. Last night, several inches of snow and a ton of sleet rained down on the area, leaving roads (and airport runways) treacherous for the time being. The crappy weather continues today, and as a result, both Delta and AirTran have cancelled all flights from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport today.

Expect most other airlines' ATL flights to be cancelled or severely delayed as well; Delta and AirTran are important though because they use ATL as a hub and thus have more passengers sleeping on the floor or in airport motels tonight in the hopes that the weather will calm, the runways will be plowed and salted, and their flights will fly tomorrow.

If you are affected by the 1,500+ flight cancellations, then remember that rebooking over the phone may be the hardest way. Here's your other options on Delta:

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but New Year's celebrations can be so delightful! And since you've got a place to go—Times Square—let's go, let's go, let's go! Okay now ignore that attempt at rewriting the song "Let It Snow" and pay attention, because we're about to give you the lowdown on crossing New Year's in Times Square off your bucket list.
