Delta Gives Free In-Flight WiFi For The Holidays To Trick You Into Shopping eBay

November 6, 2009 at 4:45 PM | by Omri | 0 Comments

If Google made a smart business decision by facilitating free holiday in-flight wifi on Virgin America—more Internet users means more revenue for Google—then the deal eBay just sealed with Delta is positively inspired. Starting Nov. 24 and lasting through a week, the auction site/retail outlet/digital store will be providing passengers with a free promotional code so they can get online via Gogo.

The only catch is that the first thing those passengers will see as they soar online through the crowded skies is the eBay frontpage. The better to do their holiday shopping, you see:

Off Rodeo Drive: Our Top Picks For Shopping Larchmont Boulevard

Where: Larchmont Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90004
November 4, 2009 at 1:36 PM | by Heidi Atwal | 0 Comments

Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is one of the world's most trafficked shopping streets, with the allure of Chanel, Dior, Vuitton, and other luxury retailers attracting shoppers with padded wallets or those just wanting a taste of over-the-top glamour. The first time you do Rodeo, it's all good fun, but the novelty quickly wears off after you realize a few things: a) there are way too many picture-happy tourists milling around, b) its clientele and shopkeepers sometimes live up to the snobbery seen in Pretty Woman, and c) dropping $3,000 on the latest "It" bag may not be feasible.

But you've come to Los Angeles to shop, and shop you will with our guide to what's off Rodeo Drive. There is no shortage of consumer fodder in the city, from West Third Street to Silverlake, and we'll introduce you to what these different neighborhoods have to offer, starting with a nondescript street just east of West Hollywood: Larchmont Boulevard.

Neighborhoods You Need To Know And Go: Chicago's Lincoln Square

October 29, 2009 at 12:04 PM | by Jennifer Kester | 0 Comments

When tourists come to Chicago, oftentimes they don't venture beyond downtown. Because this common, but easily remediable mistake, they miss out on of Chicago's best assets: its diverse neighborhoods. Lincoln Square is one such 'hood.

Once the city's German enclave, the North Side nabe now is known for the hip shops and cool cafes, restaurants and bars that line Lincoln Avenue. Plus, it's the best place to hear folk music in the city and belly up to the bar for a foamy brew. Be sure to let us know in the comments if you love Lincoln Square as much as us, and if you have any favorite spots we should know about. But for now, let's get to the meat of it with our top picks for what to do now in Lincoln Square:

Sweeten Up Your Layover In Chicago-O'Hare At Vosges Chocolate Shop

Where: O'Hare International Airport [map], Chicago, IL, United States
October 16, 2009 at 1:44 PM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport might be known as one of the country's most congested airports, but thanks to the arrival of a new shop in Terminal 1 (B Concourse), ORD is also on the map for something else: designer chocolate.

The terminal has a Vosges Haut-Chocolat (pronounced "voge") shop, and although it was installed before Christmas last year. it's better late than never to pass on any chocolate news, especially with another round of holiday travel looming. Vosges, a Chicago-based company started by a world traveling woman inspired by the flavors of the world, now has two shops in NYC and one in Vegas in addition to the Windy City, and the treats continue to evolve.

Bacon and chocolate, after the jump.

Glasgow Updates Airport Shopping With Snazzy 'Planeshop' Concept

Where: Glasgow Airport, Glasgow, United Kingdom
October 13, 2009 at 2:33 PM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

Everybody loves a good pop-up shop, but the possibility of limited-edition goods gets even more tempting when we're talking about travel products. Very soon, as the shop is due to open yet this year, "Planeshop" will debut inside of Glasgow Airport as a rotating retail concept. The shop will be permanent, but the brands for sale inside of it will alternate every so often to constantly keep the airport concessions fresh and interesting.

We love love love stuff like this because it helps to make an airport a destination in itself, giving you something to look forward and possibly counteracting the frustration experienced during the rigamarole of air travel. In addition to the limited edition items, Planeshop will provide travelers with Planemix, "a downloadable selection of global digital music tracks that rotates each month," and Foodflight, "a selection of tapas and sangria for takeout or in-store dining."

In-Flight WiFi Meets SkyMall With New 'SkyTown Center' Service

October 13, 2009 at 11:13 AM | by kjb | 0 Comments

It was only a matter of time before in-flight WiFi was used for evil. Well, not exactly, but we aren’t totally thrilled that we might be subjected to some hardcore in-flight advertising while we are trying to get some work done. There’s a new service called SkyTown Center and it’s sort of like an online version of the SkyMall catalog. Sure it will bring free WiFi to many passengers, but it will also bring loads of advertisements and access to websites only related to buying stuff.

Thankfully entertainment will also be built into the online shopping service so that passengers will be able to watch some TV, play some games, and read about where they are going. All this will be free, and probably filled with ads, but navigating away to check your email will cost you a little bit. Anything to keep people entertained—and hopefully quiet—in the cabin is a good idea.

Sundance Channel Welcomes New Travel TV Show: 'Man Shops Globe'

September 30, 2009 at 8:59 AM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

The Sundance Channel is getting a new travel show...sorta! We're imagining it as like if Anthony Bourdain was a shopper and not an eater, since the series titled "Man Shops Globe" follows the buyer-at-large, Keith Johnson, for international chain Anthropologie around the world as he sources unique and vintage finds for the stores. The eight-part series premiers on October 7 at 10pm.

For any girl or reluctant guy who has spent time in an Anthropologie store, you'll understand how this pairing of TV show and retail buyer matches; an Anthropologie is like a global finery rummage sale, with some pretty $300 frocks peppered around and $250 cutesy cardigans to match. The stores love to show off large-scale furniture as well, like antique four-poster beds swiped from estate sales in the south of France, or patchwork armchairs specially assembled in South Africa. All (non-clothing) products usually boast some such nomadic history, and it's Keith's job to secure these items from bazaars all over.

Where he's headed, after the jump.

New Perfume Line Promises To Make You Smell Like Cancun

Where: Cancun, Mexico
September 14, 2009 at 8:58 AM | by Omri | 0 Comments

Smells like Carlos & Charlies? Cancun-based cosmetics retailer Ultrafemme is putting out a new line of high-end "Cancun perfumes," designed explicitly to make the workaday woman smell like a girl living it up in Cancun. There's an argument to be made that this is a curious branding decision, given that Cancun was put on this earth to make Key West look classy. Nevertheless, they've got five distinct scents that they're selling in stores throughout the Mexican Caribbean and Los Cabos.

If you can't get down to Cancun, but still want that fresh overcrowded resort tourist trap scent, they've set up a retailer so you can purchase the scents online. All fragrances come in specially-shaped 1.7oz bottles, and each of the five is its own unique treasure.

The Top Five Counterfeit Shopping Districts In The World

September 9, 2009 at 2:18 PM | by JetSetCD | 1 Comment

While tourists who are free with their credit cards are a dream for cities, any metropolis with a thriving upscale shopping district will also have a black market equivalent doing just as well, if not better. Both buying and selling counterfeit goods is illegal in many countries, with recent court cases (Louis Vuitton vs. Canal Street merchants) backing up trademarks and revealing how the sale of counterfeit goods funds other illegal operations, like the New Jersey money laundering scandal of late.

We'll even admit to purchasing a fake for $15 in Rome's Piazza Navona, right out in the open, back in 2004. We haven't worn it yet, and we probably never will, seeing as how both brands and police have spent the last couple years reshuffling their legal and street teams in order to crack down on the vendors and buyers. And we want to keep you safe. If you're in a dangerous mood, then you might want to shop in these places, but after the jump, we've listed the World's Top Five Counterfeit Districts from which you should stay away.

Buy Life Lessons As Souvenirs From A Store In London

Where: 70 Marchmont Street, London, United Kingdom, WC1N 1AB
September 2, 2009 at 5:04 PM | by Heidi Atwal | 0 Comments

If the London storefront known as The School of Life is "an apothecary for the mind," then what they prescribe are cures for boredom, sluggish creativity, and an overall feeling of being "stuck." Tough times these may be, and call us equally tough for saying so, but we've grown tired of hearing the same tired moan and groan of pessimism.

Travel is about exploration, not least of all self-exploration, so we were excited to hear about this small shop offering big ideas—a place to break the touristy routine of museum visits and double-decker buses and get a little more out of our next London experience.

Jaunted's Guide To Shopping Like A Local In Four World-Class Cities

August 27, 2009 at 9:24 AM | by Heidi Atwal | 0 Comments

Globetrotters who consider shopping a touristy gimmick are probably thinking more about Duty-Free boutiques at the airport, or landmark-shaped tchotchkes that fanny pack-wearing travelers just love to hoard. Then there's a clique of plastic-toting trippers who carve out quality time for retail indulgence. These hard-core consumers come back with heavier suitcases and cool keepsakes from their time away. That means no "I Went to [Blank], and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt" shirts.

Jaunted's favorite shopping 'hoods are those that the locals frequent as much as savvy out-of-towners—places that have everything from the chicest clothes by local designers to uncommon home wares. We're less interested in the obscene glitz of Rodeo Drive than we are with destinations that have something unique to offer, like our suggestions below.

Jaunted's Favorite Local Shopping, Around the World, after the jump.
