Air Chanel: Karl Lagerfeld Constructs 'Jet' Set for the Haute Couture Runway
Less than 12 hours ago in Paris, the semiannual Chanel Haute Couture runway show took place, helmed as usual by designer Karl Lagerfeld. As photos of the looks trickle onto the web, we see that we're not the only ones watching Pan Am; Karl's collection turned out look after look inspired by flight, the glamorous 1960s, and the old way of getting dressed for travel.
But wait; there's more. Not only were the fashions jet-appropriate, but the entire show went down inside a set like the fuselage of a commercial airliner. Guests sat 3-4 abreast on either side of a central aisle, and were greeted by a trolley serving juices and champagne. The fauxplane inside Paris' Grand Palais, dubbed Air Chanel, took builders five days to construct.
Says the Telegraph UK of the end result:

Were Jennifer Lopez, Charlie Sheen and LeBron James All Flying on an Unsafe Private Plane?
A whistleblower is calling out Crystal Air Aviation for flying their VIP clients, including Jennifer Lopez and Charlie Sheen, on an unsafe jet.
The ex-pilot, George Thomsen, left the airline after discovering problems with everything from the plane's navigational device to its weather radar and fuel lines:
"My whole career of 42 years of flying has been about safety," he said. "These guys for whatever way possible to shortchange training, shortchange maintenance and jeopardize safety. They are jeopardizing safety and lives."

Google Wants to Rebuild the World's Largest Airship Hangar. There's Only One Catch.

We never have enough time or space to get to all the Google Travel news that we'd like. A few weeks ago we talked about their new airport maps, and a little before that we did an introduction to their burgeoning flight search service. Unfortunately Google Flight Search got dragged down by how the airline industry does business, and it has remained unimpressive.
On the other side of the success spectrum, though, developers and programmers expanded Google Earth to include gamesa move that involved airlines and has implications for social mediaand an MIT student playing around with Google Maps made a de facto travel itinerary checker.
But this post isn't about any of those stories. This post is about deep, abiding, biting, bitter jealousy.

GM's XP-21 Firebird: The 1954 Idea of a Hybrid Car
Sometimes, as lame as it may sound, it's worth it to "go antiquing" because then, while digging through a drawer full of vintage US state postcards, a gem like this emerges from the muck of history. It's a 1954 pamphlet extolling the virtues of GM's XP-21 Firebird car, the first gas turbine auto ever built.
The design of the car is heavily jet-influenced; in addition to the little wings, vertical stabilizer and single cockpit driver's seat, the Firebird even has flaps in the rear to aid in braking after the car would hopefully hit high speeds. Unfortunately the thing has never been driven beyond 100mph because it was just too darn unsafe to do so.

Got $60,000? Then You've Got a Private Roundtrip Flight (and More) on Virgin America

This could be yours
In the only bit of "Cyber Monday" news worth mentioning (you won't hear us say those words again today, by the way), Virgin America is working together with Gilt City to offer private flights on their Airbus A320s to anywhere they fly (in the US).
That's rightyou can have the plane to yourself or bring along 145 friends, so long as you've got $60,000 (inclusive of taxes and fees) to shell out for the round-trip experience. But that's not all! Virgin America will also throw in the naming rights to one of their planes, in-flight catering on your trip, and flight crew (duh) while Gilt City passes out an amenity to each passenger.

How We'll Remember Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs was a genius, a consummate innovator, a visionary and...a tourist who bought souvenirs. Despite the fact he's responsible for awesome travel tools like the iPhone, iPad, Macbook Airs and whatnot, our minds keep returning to a story from a year ago, when after being grounded because of his health for some time, Jobs again hit the skies in his private Gulfstream V and causes a small ruckus in Japan. Here's how that went:
Japanese magazine Spa! reported that back in July 2010, Apple CEO Steve Jobs attempted to board his private plane at Kansai International Airport in Osaka for a return to the United States after a family vacation in Kyoto. All was well until...airport security discovered ninja throwing stars in Jobs' luggage, and would not allow him to take them home...yes, even aboard his private plane.

Gold Seat Belts and Sinks? It's Got to Be Donald Trump's New Boeing 757
It's been almost five months since we last talked about Donald Trump's new private jet, and thatdear friendsis about 4 months and 29 days too long.
Back in April, The Donald took delivery of his specially outfitted Boeing 757, meanwhile putting his old 727 up for sale. His new toy is a $100 million work of art, but it's not just off the assembly line; this 757 formerly belonged to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
Enough of historylet's talk about right now. Donald's 757 seats/beds 43 passengers and boasts a 16-hour range, but duh we just want to see the master bedroom and all the gold-plated sinks in the thing. That's where the video tour comes in:

Thanks to MTV, 'Jersey Shore' Escapes the Real Jersey Shore by Private Jet
While the rest of us were scrambling for days trying to rearrange delayed flights out of New York and New Jersey, The Jersey Shore cast got a free ride out of the Teterboro Airport in New Jersey on Saturday, courtesy of MTV.
The network wanted the cast in Los Angeles for Sunday night's VMAs so badly that they chartered a private jet as area airports were canceling commercial flights thanks to Hurricane Irene. "We had to get out here for the VMAs," Vinny said after arriving in L.A. "MTV did whatever they could to get us out here. We wouldn't miss it for the world."

'Social Flights' Combines Private Jet Travel With Your Facebook Friends
At this point you probably are familiar with sites like Groupon or LivingSocial where you—and like 100 other people—can get a decent deal by purchasing something all together. Well the same idea is starting to gain a little traction in the travel market, and we’re kind of excited about the possibilities. Unfortunately, it doesn’t mean that you and all your Twitter followers can group buy a ride on a 747, but it actually might be even more awesome—at least for just you.
Social Flights taps into the private jet market, and it connects empty seats with those looking to hitch a ride. It also wants to know about your own social networks, and it can arrange something for your and your pals for as little as $400 per person. However, a lot does depend on what kind of plane you select and where you’re going, so don’t just assume you can score a transcon trip aboard a Gulfstream V for the change in your piggy bank.

Katy Perry Holds Up Her Flight for Over an Hour in Sydney
If you thought commercial airlines were bad, try flying with Katy Perry. The pop singer kept her entourage and band waiting on the tarmac in Sydney for more than an hour yesterday before she finally showed up, still in her pajamas.
The crew was heading to Brisbane via private plane where Katy played a concert for a sold out crowd at the Queensland city's Entertainment Centre, after which she tweeted, "YO BRISBANE! You were HELLA fresh tahnight! See you in a week, trick!" During a gig in Sydney earlier this week, Perry admitted she didn't like one of Australia's most beloved snacks, Vegemite spread. She even revealed that she once threw up after eating it.
Katy's 117-date world tour ends in Dublin in November. You can find date and ticket information at Ticketmaster.com.

Now That He's Got a 757, Who Wants to Buy Donald Trump's Old 727?

This is Trump's old 727. See link below for a pic of the 757
Donald Trump won't be on the set of Celebrity Apprentice or even at New York's Trump Tower today; he's off in New Hampshire meeting with the GOP regarding his pet idea to run for president on the Republican ticket. According to PBS, Trump's transportation of choice to Portsmouth was a helicopter
What he's flying is really the only topic we really care about when it comes to Trump, especially since the last month has seen him upgrade from his Boeing 727 to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's old Boeing 757. The Donald paid $100 million for the used plane, a sum which the Magellan Jets Blog calls "extremely high," but counters that it's believed Allen's 757 comes fully loaded with "all kinds of bells and whistles, ranging from a state-of-the-art entertainment system to the most advance flight avionics."
