Paying Pennies to Fly Many Miles on Singapore's Scoot: A Review

For what feels like forever, we've been talking about Singapore's newest long-haul, low-cost carrier, Scoot. Finally, just last week the day came for our flight reservations and we got our butts in the seats to experience the so-called "Scootitude."

The basics: Offering a no-frills service model that brings passengers from international cities to the Southeast Asian metropolis of Singapore, Scoot is the low cost little bro of Singapore Airlines. We flew from the Gold Coast, Australia (OOL) on up to SIN and back, snagging tickets for basic economy at $88 AUD. For an 8-hour flight from Australia to Singapore, that is basically $11 per hour. Our return flight was in ScootBiz for $388 AUD.

First Impressions on a First Flight on Scoot, Singapore's Newest Airline

Well, we finally made it! We just flew Singapore's newest low-cost airline, Scoot. Truth be told, when we booked the $88 AUD flights from Australia's Gold Coast to Singapore, we were a bit skeptical. That skepticism however quickly disappeared once we walked aboard. Warm smiles, a comfortable cabin and professional demeanor among the flight crew all set our worries at ease.

Trust that we'll have a full review once we head back on the return flight, but here are our initial observations:

What to Buy Before and During Your Low-Priced Scoot Flight

When Singapore's newest little budget carrier, Scoot, announced their inaugural fares of $88 AUD each way for flights to and from Australia, naturally, we jumped at the chance to snag a deal. We went through the booking motions and even purchased a FlyBag special where we received about 15kg of checked bag allowance and the ability to choose our seat to Singapore.

As we are traveling soon, it's time to confirm all details. Upon our visit to the Scoot website, we see a new addition has been added to options—Manage Your Booking.

The Airport Where Planes Actually Go Back in Time Before Takeoff

In one of the most famous areas in Australia there sits a special little airport with a special little secret. Well, it's not so much a secret as it is a unique feature. We're talking about the Gold Coast Airport located just to the south of Surfers Paradise.

Gold Coast Airport, or OOL for you #avgeeks, is a normal medium-sized international airport that serves a good majority of major Australian cities and a list of short- to medium-haul international destinations. It's also a hub for Jetstar.

Japan Air Travel: More Flights, Different Flights

Big things are happening in the realm of Japanese air travel. Bloomberg reported just this morning that Tokyo's Haneda airport--which dropped most of its international air traffic after Narita opened in 1978--will have twice as many flights as originally planned after a fourth runway opens in 2010.

As many as 30,000 slots per year will serve Asian cities like Seoul and Hong Kong, while another 30,000 will be allotted primarily for red-eye flights to Europe and other world destinations. Even better? The government is planning a high-speed rail link between Narita and Haneda, also to be completed by 2010, making Tokyo a powerhouse international hub.

Meanwhile, Australian LCC Jetstar is switching up its long-haul flight to and from Osaka: Brisbane is out and the Gold Coast (OOL) is in. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Queensland's largest city just isn't doing it for Japanese tourists:

Strong trade industry support in Japan and Australia led to the change, Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway said.

"The reason we've done this is very straightforward--it's market driven," he said. "Over 75% of the Japanese customers who fly on this route, their end destination is the Gold Coast."
