When Will American Airlines Have Their Own Boeing 787 Dreamliners?

Of course it won't have the old stripes...

It's official: a Boeing 787 Dreamliner pilot training simulator is in the house at American Airlines HQ in Dallas, and you know what that means? The actual airplane can't be too far behind!

American is due to receive 42 total Dreamliners (12 787-8s and 30 787-9s) and the first delivery should happen in the fourth quarter of 2014. All we want for Christmas is the option to fly an American Airlines 787, truly.

These planes were first projected to arrive in 2012, but you know how the Dreamliner program met with delays? At least it's two years late, but not too late.

What 2014 Means for the Oneworld Airline Alliance

The opening of a new year brings new opportunity to the world's three largest airline alliances. Some movement, along with a few new entrants in the major alliances will not only strengthen networks, but open up new destinations for using those hard-earned miles. Today, we have a look at what's happening with the Oneworld alliance for 2014.

Of course the largest news is the merger between American Airlines and US Airways which will see US Airways leaving Star Alliance for Oneworld on March 31. The alliance will gain a new airline only until the merger is complete, at which point US Airways will wholly sucked into American Airlines.

'Howdy, Y'all' from the World's Longest Nonstop Flight

Did y’all cowpokes know there’s a newly crowned “World’s Longest Nonstop Flight?” With the retirement of Singapore Airlines flight 21/22, an unnaturally long 18hr 50min nonstop flight between Singapore and Newark, comes the new champion of distance: Qantas Airlines 7's 15h 25min nonstop from Sydney, Australia to Dallas, Texas.

It doesn’t take a math genius to realize that the flying time difference between the newcomer and the old-timer is a dramatic 3hr 25min. You could watch “Titanic” from start to finish in that exact time (the movie is literally 3 hr 25 min long). However, we certainly don’t want to make light of a 15-hour flight.

Let us not forget that while Singapore’s flights were longer, they were also running a completely business class cabin with no economy option. For Qantas, a few hundred passengers on the new longest flight will be spending their 15+ hours sitting upright in economy, chewing Xanax to make the pain go away. Just kidding—Economy in one of Qantas’ 747-400ERs really isn’t all that bad (though we’d still suggest spending a little extra for Premium Economy like we did).

Six hours is an incredibly long time to be sitting on a domestic flight. To a frequent flyer, that stretch from New York to LA or SF means lost hours of work and sleep. To an infrequent traveler, it's an interminable wait only made bearable by the promise of eventually getting off the thing.

Why does transcontinental travel suck so hard? The problem: old airplanes, with old seats and old technology. The solution: new airplanes, with new seats and new technology. Please welcome American Airlines' fresh and fighting Airbus A321s to the skies.

For travelers who've experienced American's current transcontinental service onboard the achy-breaky old 767-200s, the new A321s will be a revelation. No doubt; we fully expect passengers to board these aircraft and think "hallelujah, this is going to be a great flight," no matter the class.

What the Department of Justice Settlement Means for the Merger of American and US Airways

Now that we've explained how best to reach northern Chile's Atacama Desert and even how to pack, it's high time to venture out and explore the dramatic landscape.

All of these sights we hit as part of excursions from our hotel, the Alto Atacama, just outside the town of San Pedro de Atacama. Driving to them independently is possible, and we even witnessed some intrepid travelers in reinforced vans setting up camp in their cars at particularly scenic overlooks, but many of the area's hotels specialize in expert-led tours of which you should absolutely take advantage. Getting lost out there may be fun for two minutes, but this is one instance where it's best to keep to the beaten paths.

Flights from New York to London are almost as frequent as a bus service; there's nearly one every hour. The majority fly between New York's JFK Airport and London-Heathrow, but switching it up and choosing the British Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner departure from Newark's Liberty International Airport means picking the plane with most pizzazz.

With 35 seats in Club World (business), 25 in World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and 154 in World Traveller (economy), the 787 is no jumbo jet. Instead, we'd say it's more of a boutique experience, a specialty service of sorts which brings all the fun new stuff of the Dreamliner to the transatlantic routes typically served by the same ol' same ol'.

We've just crossed it off our own, and all week we'll be sharing our top tips to making this dream destination a reality vacation.

Listen for the whirr as the landing gear of the LAN Airlines A320 descends. In a few minutes more, you'll be on the ground that now, at a few thousand feet, looks like a stretch of rusty orange nothingness. From that nothingness appears a runway, and a few bumps later you've entered the oldest desert on Earth.

Although the Atacama's arid expanse seems peaceful, it's actually only a thin veil disguising the truth of the region—that its volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, salt lakes, towering sand dunes and whipping winds mean the very ground underneath your feet is extremely alive and active. It's often said that the terrain resembles the surface of Mars more than anything you'd expect to find here on Earth and, in fact, NASA maintains testing sites here.

As you can imagine, reaching such an extreme place requires some equally extreme travel, but it can be done. Pack moisturizer and come along...
