Around Business Class of a Qatar Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 5 Steps

Air New Zealand may have just taken delivery of the latest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, but the original 787-8 still has us excited when we find ourselves on one.

Qatar Airways has 9 Dreamliners operating a number of routes out of its brand-spanking new (and humongous) Hamad International Airport in Doha, and an additional 51 on order from Boeing. We recently did a business class return between Stockholm and Doha, which gave us enough time to explore its swanky interiors.

Don’t Let the Disaster Fool You; Malaysia Airlines Does A Lot of Things Right

Obviously, the press for Malaysia Airlines hasn’t been the best of late given the on-going search for the unsolved mystery that is Flight 370. Making our way to Borneo this week, we flew the airline from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur (4 hours) and then on to Kuching (1.5 hours). Despite the unpleasant images that come with the mention of its name, we actually really enjoyed our experience flying Malaysia Air. In terms of its everyday flying policies and procedures, it does a lot of things right.

Inside the Brand New Qantas Lounge at Hong Kong International Airport

Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok airport is not a bad place to spend a few hours pre-departure. In fact, it’s high on our list of favorite airports around, especially if you’re flying in a premium cabin on Cathay Pacific or another oneworld airline for the excellent airline lounge options. We just took you inside a private Cabana in the flagship “The Wing” First Class lounge and the latest Cathay addition “The Bridge,” and are finishing up with the even newer Qantas lounge, which arrived in April.

Located on level 7, but at the opposite end of Cathay Pacific’s The Wing Lounge, the new Qantas Hong Kong Lounge brings the previous underground Business Class Lounge up to where its separate First Class Lounge used to be, redesigning the whole space in the process. It's huge for a dedicated airline lounge at an airport where there already are a range of oneworld alliance lounge options, and it seats up to 300 passengers at a time.

Inside a First Class Cabana at Cathay Pacific's 'The Wing' Hong Kong Airport Lounge

Hong Kong gets a lot of love from us for many reasons, not least among which is its awesome airport, Chek Lap Kok. No matter how you pass through HKG, you’re likely to have a pleasant experience, but this being the home of Cathay Pacific, flying in a premium cabin or having the right status with oneworld alliance means you’re in for a real treat.

The airline lounges here are among the best in existence, and they're regularly updated with the newest lounge niceties. When we flew out of Hong Kong earlier this month, we made sure to build in enough time to explore them all. Naturally we first aimed straight for the top, with the private cabanas in the redesigned Cathay Pacific “The Wing” First Class lounge.

Inside Cathay Pacific's New 'The Bridge' Lounge at Hong Kong International Airport

Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok airport is not a bad place to spend a few hours pre-departure. In fact, it’s high on our list of favorite airports around, especially if you’re flying in a premium cabin on Cathay Pacific or another oneworld airline for the excellent airline lounge options. We just took you inside a private Cabana in the flagship “The Wing” First Class lounge and are continuing with the latest Cathay addition: “The Bridge”.

With “The Wing,” “The Pier,” and “The Cabin,” you’d think Cathay wouldn’t need another airline lounge, but they went ahead and did it anyway, opening “The Bridge” late last year. The lounge is located at the far end of the terminal, just after gates 35 and 36, "bridging" the base of the Y that the building splits into at this point.

The Bridge is a combined business & first class lounge, and depending on your departure gate it might be a bit of a longer walk / detour, but we’d likely seek out The Bridge regardless of proximity to our gate the next time we’re in Hong Kong – read on to find out why.

Flight Review: Air Berlin Looking Much Better with New A330s

When we reviewed a flight from JFK to Berlin via Air Berlin a few summers ago, we thought they still had some work to do after joining the One World Alliance. The planes were a bit outdated at the time, but the carrier has since added new A330s and lie-flat business class seats to its fleet for long-haul routes.

Last week, we flew the airline from Chicago to Berlin, riding in economy class one way and business class the other. It was good to see that most of the problems previously reported in economy have been solved thanks to a spruced-up interior cabin with individual entertainment systems. Unlike last time, there was plenty of content (movies, TV, music) to keep our attention, free headphones, and several free alcoholic beverages before and during dinner service.

The Newest Fancypants Airline Lounge Amenity Will See You in HEL

When we think of awesome airport lounge experiences, our mind typically turns to big, bad international carriers like Lufthansa or Cathay Pacific. However, there's no reason to overlook the smaller major carriers from other regions, such as Finnair, especially now that the airline is installing a full-fledged sauna right into the hustle and bustle of the terminal.

Finnair just released details on their new premium lounge at their home in Helsinki, schedule to open its doors on July 1, which is perfect timing to delight the summer tourist rush to Scandinavia.

When Will American Airlines Have Their Own Boeing 787 Dreamliners?

Of course it won't have the old stripes...

It's official: a Boeing 787 Dreamliner pilot training simulator is in the house at American Airlines HQ in Dallas, and you know what that means? The actual airplane can't be too far behind!

American is due to receive 42 total Dreamliners (12 787-8s and 30 787-9s) and the first delivery should happen in the fourth quarter of 2014. All we want for Christmas is the option to fly an American Airlines 787, truly.

These planes were first projected to arrive in 2012, but you know how the Dreamliner program met with delays? At least it's two years late, but not too late.

What 2014 Means for the Oneworld Airline Alliance

The opening of a new year brings new opportunity to the world's three largest airline alliances. Some movement, along with a few new entrants in the major alliances will not only strengthen networks, but open up new destinations for using those hard-earned miles. Today, we have a look at what's happening with the Oneworld alliance for 2014.

Of course the largest news is the merger between American Airlines and US Airways which will see US Airways leaving Star Alliance for Oneworld on March 31. The alliance will gain a new airline only until the merger is complete, at which point US Airways will wholly sucked into American Airlines.

Why Today is Such a Big Deal for the American Airlines and US Airways Merger

'Howdy, Y'all' from the World's Longest Nonstop Flight

Did y’all cowpokes know there’s a newly crowned “World’s Longest Nonstop Flight?” With the retirement of Singapore Airlines flight 21/22, an unnaturally long 18hr 50min nonstop flight between Singapore and Newark, comes the new champion of distance: Qantas Airlines 7's 15h 25min nonstop from Sydney, Australia to Dallas, Texas.

It doesn’t take a math genius to realize that the flying time difference between the newcomer and the old-timer is a dramatic 3hr 25min. You could watch “Titanic” from start to finish in that exact time (the movie is literally 3 hr 25 min long). However, we certainly don’t want to make light of a 15-hour flight.

Let us not forget that while Singapore’s flights were longer, they were also running a completely business class cabin with no economy option. For Qantas, a few hundred passengers on the new longest flight will be spending their 15+ hours sitting upright in economy, chewing Xanax to make the pain go away. Just kidding—Economy in one of Qantas’ 747-400ERs really isn’t all that bad (though we’d still suggest spending a little extra for Premium Economy like we did).

Why American Airlines' New Airbus A321 is Almost Too Cool: 21 Original Photos

Six hours is an incredibly long time to be sitting on a domestic flight. To a frequent flyer, that stretch from New York to LA or SF means lost hours of work and sleep. To an infrequent traveler, it's an interminable wait only made bearable by the promise of eventually getting off the thing.

Why does transcontinental travel suck so hard? The problem: old airplanes, with old seats and old technology. The solution: new airplanes, with new seats and new technology. Please welcome American Airlines' fresh and fighting Airbus A321s to the skies.

For travelers who've experienced American's current transcontinental service onboard the achy-breaky old 767-200s, the new A321s will be a revelation. No doubt; we fully expect passengers to board these aircraft and think "hallelujah, this is going to be a great flight," no matter the class.
