Three Unusual and Unique Alternatives to the New Year's Eve Ball Drop
Everyone knows about that crystal ball drop in Times Square to celebrate the New Year, but there’s even better stuff falling from the sky around the country. If New York City is out of range this year, there might just be something a little more unique to welcome in 2012 close to home. Here’s three options and celebrations that might just be a little more interesting:
· Oversized Orange in Miami, Florida:
Sunny Florida may be a great place to welcome 2012, especially if you’re looking for some balmy temperatures. In the city’s downtown—away from the South Beach scene—a big neon orange rises to the top of the Intercontinental Hotel as the clock approaches midnight. The party goes down at Bayfront Park on Biscayne Bay beginning at 8pm, and there’s even a Disco Dance Party—their terminology not ours—to keep you going. Admission and entertainment is free for all, but we’d bring along some cash for a snack or a drink.

Everything is free and all the action takes place at the town square. There’s no booze here, but Cody Simpson and Allstar Weekend—of Disney Channel fame—will be performing around 10pm and 11pm, respectively. As the clock turns to 2011 a giant Hershey’s Kiss will rise into the night sky followed by plenty of fireworks. We’re not positive, but we’re thinking that there’s plenty of opportunities to score some free candy too.

Where To Elope For January 01, 2010: Las Vegas, Baby!
If you want to ring in the New Year with a ring on your left finger, make like Ed Helms' Stu on The Hangover and head to Vegas. Here's your guide on how to elope in Sin City, but if you're looking to pull out a tooth, you're on your own.

Packages be as high as $23,090, to ensure you won't be cheated from that overpriced wedding feel.

Aspen Defuses New Year's Bomb Threat
God save our aging, semi-retired celebs! After four homemade "gasoline bombs" disguised as holiday gifts were found in Aspen, police there say they found the body of the would-be bomber, a convicted con man who apparently shot himself before his New Year's plot could unfold.
The explosives were found at two banks and in a nearby alley along with notes demanding $60,000, leading police to seal off a 16-block section of downtown, shuttering restaurants and bars gearing up for a huge night. Celebrations in the celeb-stuffed ski village ground to a halt, and the professionally planned fireworks show was also canceled.
Locals say the suspect, James Blanning Jr., was upset that he hadn't cashed in on the town's transformation from mining outpost to celebrity ski haven, though we'd classify his apparent expertise in grandstanding and dramatic plots as straight out of Aspen resident Don Johnson's playbook.
