Sir Stelios and 'FastJet' Scheduled to Depart Soon from Africa

December 15, 2011 at 8:32 AM | by | Comments (0)

When we least heard from Sir Stelios there was news about a potential new low-cost carrier that would focus on more long-haul routes. We guess the potential for cheap flights between London and New York is still there, but now it sounds like his low-cost model is shifting to a different continent altogether.

The founder of easyJet is thinking that the next great success in the airline industry will take place in Africa. He’s already working to get funding in place, and there are some deals being done between his group and Rubicon Diversified Investments in hopes of creating a new low-frills, low-cost airline. The placeholder name—FastJet—is now apparently the working name of the new air venture.

AirAsia Boss Launching Another Malaysian Airline, for Some Reason

November 14, 2011 at 2:03 PM | by | Comments (0)

Demonstrating impressive complete disregard for the liklihood of a global financial meltdown, AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes is launching a premium Malaysian airline to run shuttles between Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta and Singapore.

Dubbed Caterham Jet, the regional airline will cater to business executives rich enough to pay for ultra-premium flights but not so rich that they have access to private jets. We're presuming people like that exist, but it seems like kind of a specialized demographic. Even worse, it's the exact demographic that Qantas is already targeting with their new RedQ airline.

Global economic retraction plus niche customer base plus direct competition from Qantas equals...no way this works, right? We're quite sure they had focus groups and market studies and everything, but this just doesn't sound like the kind of thing that would work.

ANA is Keen to Launch New Budget Airline, 'Peach'

Where: Japan
November 14, 2011 at 9:50 AM | by | Comment (1)

In case you were wondering where all the airline action is these days (you probably aren't, but we're going to tell you anyway)...it's in Asia. New airlines are popping up like pimples on prom night. AirAsia's got AirAsia Japan and Caterham Jet, Qantas is toying with RedQ and Singapore wants to Scoot. Oh, ANA (aka home of the first 787s) wants in one the game too, and they're launched a cute little airline called "Peach."

Peach is really happening, as they've just taken delivery of their first actual plane, a leased Airbus A320 painted in some hot pink and fuchsia livery. March 2012 is the projected go-time for Peach, which is based at Osaka's Kansai International Airport and planning to fly from KIX to domestic spots like Fukuoka and Sapporo, with international routes to follow.

REDjet Continues to Do Their Thing with Three New Nonstop Options

September 23, 2011 at 9:15 AM | by | Comments (0)

It’s been a little bit of time since we last checked in on the comings and goings of REDjet, and it looks like there’s some good news. The Caribbean’s first low-cost carrier isn’t flying to and from the lower 48 just yet—bummer—but they are working on expanding their route network between several different slices of island paradise.

REDjet is already flying between Barbados, Trinidad and Guyana, but they’re looking to add up to three new routes this November, and the new spots include Antigua and Barbuda as well as Jamaica. New nonstop flights include Barbados to Jamaica, Trinidad nonstop to Jamaica, and Guyana right over to Antigua. Again, all the fun begins towards the end of November—like the 21st and 22nd—but you can go ahead and book your tickets now.

REDjet Takes Off in the Caribbean, But Not from the USA

June 8, 2011 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

Back in the fall we were happy to learn about REDjet and their plans to bring cheap fares to one and all across the Caribbean. After all, they promised initial rates to start at just like $10 or so each way, but it looks like their business plan is already starting to hit a little bit of turbulence.

The airline is having a little trouble getting government approval to fly here and there, so as of right now, things are pretty limited. The biggest pain—at least for us—is that there are no flights to and from the United States yet, so you might need to look elsewhere if you were banking on REDjet to be your savior for a cheap weekend beach getaway.

Vision Airlines is Out of Control, with Like 100 Different Flight Options Already

May 26, 2011 at 9:58 AM | by | Comments (0)

We’ve known for a while that Vision Airlines has been attempting to take over the entire country—watch out Southwest—and it looks like this week brings even more flight options. They started out with a few flights here and there across the south—kind of like Delta—but now it seems like they’re starting to slowly expand across the country.

The big news is that they’re now all about connecting flights as well, as they’re kind of starting their very first hub in Florida. They’re concentrating on sending as many flights in and out of Destin/Ft. Walton Beach as possible, and they’ve actually already got like 100 different flight flavors. Yes—triple digits. It was kind of hard for us to believe that the first time we read it too, especially since they’ve really only been doing things like since the beginning of March. We only first heard of them during that whole Russian spy transport thing.

All the Latest News on LV Air and Their 'Celebrity Hologram'-Filled Vegas Flights

April 13, 2011 at 9:47 AM | by | Comments (4)

Las Vegas may soon welcome flights that begin treating passengers like high rollers even before reaching Sin City. Maybe. Possibly. Hopefully, if the goals of start-up airline LV Air come true. We've been following their baby steps to becoming a real airline, and another chapter begins in the LV Air book this week as they announce their desire to do more than just fly direct between New York and Vegas; they want to add over 15 more destinations to their route map before they even have airplanes.

The whole LV Air concept is a crazy idea, but it's a crazy idea that just might work. And as with anything over-the-top in LV, the airline will either be spectacularly awesome, or a spectacular failure. Let's look at exactly what they want to bring to you on their flight:

REDjet, the Caribbean’s First Low Cost Carrier, Plans Flights for $9.99

November 9, 2010 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

When we’re sitting in paradise, we’re usually pretty content focusing on the sand between our toes and the warm sunshine, but apparently there are plenty of other folks that are always thinking about what destination is next. Those are the kind of people that REDjet is looking to target with their new service, as they’re hoping to be the Caribbean’s first low cost carrier.

The airline hasn’t started things up just yet, but they have hired a bunch of employees—hopefully some of them are pilots—and they’re thinking about getting operations up and running at the beginning of December. The planes will be MD-80s formerly flown by American Airlines.

You May Fly on 'My WINGS' During Your Next Trip to Germany

July 13, 2010 at 9:21 AM | by | Comment (1)

If you’ve booked your transatlantic flight to Europe already and are still thinking about which low cost carrier to use to get around, we’ve got another one to add to the mix. Joining the crowded field is My WINGS—they seem to enjoy capitalization. The airline will be based in Germany at Friedrichshafen Airport. They’ll be fighting it out for market share with other cheap carriers like Germanwings and Iceland Express; however, My WINGS won’t be going to any similar destinations so they should get a good headstart.

Rome, London, and Alicante are just a few of the destinations that they plan to visit when things start up next month. As of now the airline is looking to fill up the tanks and stuff the cabin full of passengers beginning August 11. We’re eager to see what their livery looks like plastered against the MD-87 aircraft that they plan to use.

Private Jets with Painted Flames and Zebra Interiors: It's Vince Neil Aviation

March 24, 2010 at 2:05 PM | by | Comments (2)

What do you if you're a rockstar and you find yourself buying so many hours on private jets that it's about time you buy your own, but the things are so darned expensive? Well, if you're Vince Neil, frontman of band Mötley Crüe, then you go ahead and buy a few planes and turn them into a private aviation business.

Yes, that's right; Vince Neil now owns Vince Neil Aviation, which has a Hawker 700, a Lear 35 and a Gulfstream available for rental out of Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport. Aside from the "VN" logo near the door of the planes, Vince told Robin Leach that they've got all a rocker could want:

The planes are now all finished, they are all tricked out exactly how you think a rocker’s tour plane would be, complete with painted flames on the fuselage and the zebra-striped interior furnishings!

A picture of Vince Neil toasting the plane, after the jump!

What Is Going On With FEEL Air and Their Promise of $300 Flights to Scandinavia?

January 27, 2010 at 12:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

Shouldn't we all be preparing to fly from New York to Oslo or Stockholm on the cheap by now? After all, that's what start-up Scandinavian low-cost airline FEEL Air promised back in October when they first announced their creation.

The first flights, touted as costing less than $300 round-trip per person, taxes included, were predicted for the first quarter of 2010. If FEEL Air is still on schedule, they'd be selling those cheap-o tickets now, right? Well, they aren't. And all news of them has died down to nothing but a few sporadic Swedish murmurs, which now predict that FEEL Air has pushed back its launch to summer because of a delay in receiving its Norwegian AOC (Air Operator's Certificate).

The UK's Newest Airline Has the Preppiest Name Ever: 'Varsity Express'

January 25, 2010 at 10:30 AM | by | Comment (1)

The economy is growing and cash is flowing, so it’s the perfect time to start a new airline. Well not really, but a rough financial picture isn’t limiting the hopes and dreams of Varsity Express. It’s a new regional airline in the United Kingdom, and it’s hoping that people are eager to be whisked between Oxford and Edinburgh, beginning in March.

Varsity Express will be using British Aerospace Jetstream 31 aircraft, and the planes will be shuttling customers back and forth during the week, as there are no weekend flights just yet. To get things started they’re offering up £49 one-way tickets—about $80—including taxes and charges through March 12. Once in the air you’ll be enjoying complimentary refreshments and a snack to eat. They even promise flight changes without a fee and no extra checked luggage costs—we’ll see how long that really lasts.
