We are about to see how much good stuff $1 billion gets you, as the airport in Orlando just scored that kind of funding to upgrade and improve its offerings within the terminals and concourses.
All the theme park traffic and other tourist attractions in the area made Orlando the 13th busiest airport in the country last year based on passenger numbers. Airport officials only imagine the place getting even busier in the future as, after the renovations are complete they expect as many as 45 million passengers to come and go through the place each year.

To start the week off we figured we’d share a little bit of a distraction the form of a new airplane paint job, and this one comes to us from the fun folks over at Southwest Airlines. We know that Southwest is a big fan of animals—from puppies to ponies—but they also have a well-documented spot in their hearts for penguins.

We’ve seen celebrity chefs, organic ingredients, and even technology—think iPads—show their influence on the airport dining scene, but now it looks like another trend is heading to the airport. Apparently the food truck craze has arrived at the airport, so the long-term parking lot is no longer just for parking.
Obviously food trucks aren’t exactly arriving inside the airport—at least not yet—but if you need to grab a bite before hitting the terminal or after touching down they’ve now got you covered. ABC News reports that the cell phone lot seems to be the new food court, as airports like Orlando International Airport have started slinging street fare right outside of security. In fact over at MCO it sounds like they’ve got at least six food trucks rotating in and out over a their commercial lot as well as their taxi staging area. Clearly the airport eats aren’t just for travelers anymore.

In the name of giving credit where credit is due, we're hereby noting that TSA is considering maybe letting travelers over the age of 75 keep on their shoes and light jackets as they pass through security. The pilot programwhich will be launched Monday in ORD, DEN, MCO, and PDXjoins other experiments designed to speed the screening of trusted fliers, pilots, and children. They're all part of TSA's effort to move away from a one-size-fits-all model, which is quite laudable and so three cheers for slightly less stupid airport security.
But come on. Have we really gotten to a place where we need staggered pilot programs to evaluate whether it's OK to let grandma wear her beach flip flops as she shuffles, ever so slowly shuffles, through a scanner? It's definitely worth trying out, but it just seems so small.

Amstel Light just not cutting it anymore? If you need a dose of the stronger brew, or another of Amsterdam's unique offerings, there's now a new way to get to the Netherlands from Florida. On June 24, Dutch airline ArkeFly launched a non-stop service between Amsterdam and Orlando. SoFla gets a piece of the action, too, with the flight continuing on to Miami International before flying non-stop back to Amsterdam.
The new routes, which will operate Mondays and Fridays, make ArkeFly the only Dutch airline to offer non-stop service to Orlando and Miami.

Tis the season for back-ups at airport check-in desks and clogs at security, but never did we think that an airline would encourage such crowding during the prime holiday travel season. But then, Air Canada is a little different, hm? A few days ago, at Vancouver International Airport, 60 dancers joined together to form an Air Canada-sponsored flashmob.
The cute little event, which appears to have gone down during a slow evening period at the airport (thank god), involved young people donning Santa hats and going all out in dancing to a live rendition of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."
Meanwhile, at Orlando International Airport, another flashmob was delighting travelers, but this time with their voice:

Everybody has a story about their first time. The anticipation, the nerves, the worry...but then the pure wonder when you finally take off. Of course we're talking about your first flightthe first time you boarded an airplane and discovered the skyways. We're looking to tell those stories in a new series simply called "My First Flight" and we're starting it off with one of our own. Want to share your first flight story? We've love to have it! Send it along to us here.
It was an AirTran flight, this I remember because my mom had asked the flight attendant if they had wing pins to give away to kids, sinceyou seeit was my first flight, after all. The FA replied that they didn't have those things on AirTran. I was probably bummed for all of a few seconds however, since shortly after that, the plane surged forward for take-off and I felt that sweet force that pushes you back into your seat. Plus I had other things to think about, like the fact that I was heading to Walt Disney World on a Florida vacation.

Believe it or not, it's already been since the beginning of June that low-cost airline Iceland Express began flying between Newark-Liberty International and Iceland's Reykjavik-Keflavik Airport. The route has done well for them and they're extending the seasonal service through the end of October, as well as throwing in a totally new routeOrlando to Reykjavikspecially for the month of October, but we're guessing it'll return for summer 2011. The Orlando flights begin October 2 and end October 26, chiefly for Icelanders to get a last bit of sun.
If you're looking to squeeze in a last taste of Europe in summer, the airline is also throwing a huge sale on flights from New York to their European mainland destinations. For $399, taxes included, you can get from NYC to Copenhagen (we found $399 for a Sept 6 departure, Sept 13 return), London-Gatwick ($399 for Sept 2 departure, Sept 6 return), and Luxembourg (Sept 1 departure, Sept 9 return). Surf around for more dates, but remember not to try later than October since the airline will leave NYC for the winter.

We've seen vending machines at airports peddling everything from Kosher food to gold bars, and yet this Rosetta Stone vending machine at Orlando International Airport completely took us by surprise last weekend.
It makes perfect sense to be selling the expensive (but comprehensive) language learning courses at an airport, but why in the terminal with the flights from Southwest and Jetblue? They aren't exactly flying to Europe or Asia or anything. That said, these are selling as when we passed back by this machine on our flight out of MCO, we noticed that a few more languages had sold out.
Would you buy a language learning course from an airport vending machine like this?Let us know in comments below!
