All Aboard Vueling's Instagram Jet!

Where: Spain
May 21, 2012 at 6:27 PM | by | Comments (0)

Hey—remember when KLM used Facebook to cover a plane in your photos, creating a very unique livery?

Well we're happy to say that another airline has decided to let you dictate its airplane's looks, but this time it'll be using Instagram. Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling is asking their Facebook fans to upload images of Vueling destinations* to their Instagram accounts for the chance at winning 1 of 50 free roundtrip flights and a spot for their photo on the exterior of a Vueling jet in inside a printed book that travels with that special aircraft.

So THAT's How You Fly a Plane Containing the Olympic Torch

May 18, 2012 at 2:53 PM | by | Comments (0)

As we publish this, a British Airways Airbus 319 is setting down at Royal Navy Air Base Culdrose in Cornwall, bringing with it the Olympic Flame straight from Greece.

London 2012 Olympics fever is officially in effect. The torch has landed.

So how does an airline—one that bans smoking onboard—manage to fly a live flame for four hours? Like this, apparently, as British Airways posted a photo to their Instagram account of the flame being buckled into its first row seats onboard the special BA2012 flight. The Olympic flame cannot be extinguished, and yet BA is flying with a fire marshall in the next seat and an extra pilot. You know, just in case.

Alaska Airlines Will Again Reel in the Special 'Salmon-Thirty-Salmon' 737

May 18, 2012 at 10:11 AM | by | Comments (0)

A look at the plan for the new fish...

You know we’re suckers for anything to do with airplane liveries, and we also always get a kick out of travel stuff involving animals. So that’s why we couldn’t resist sharing an update regarding Alaska Airlines and their plans for the next generation of their “Salmon-Thirty-Salmon.”

The original fish-plane initially entered the hangar for the finned paint job back in 2005, but after a couple years of flying to here and there it was in need of an update. Unfortunately, it was repainted into the normal Alaska Airlines colors and the world lost this quirky airplane for the time being.

This Parrot Flies Over 500 MPH, Thank to Frontier

April 20, 2012 at 12:59 PM | by | Comments (0)

Breaking news. This is super important. You better sit down for this.

Frontier has chosen a new animal to grace their airplane tails, keeping up a long tradition of making their jets cuter than everyone else's. Please welcome Polly the Parrot to vertical stabilizer on Frontier's fleet. Polly won't be the first tropical animal to grace a Frontier fin—Flip, the Bottle-nose dolphin has that distinction—but she will be the first tropical bird.

To earn her spot on the tail, Polly beat out rivals Chloe the squirrel and Enrique the frog, after 65,000 votes were cast at Frontierairlines.com.

Check out the other animal tales here and...hey—which one would you most want to fly on? We're pretty partial to the Jack the Rabbit, just so we can say we flew the bunny plane.

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's a British Airways Plane Painted Like a Bird!

April 3, 2012 at 4:06 PM | by | Comments (0)

Airplanes painted to look like birds are nothing new—have you ever seen Nok Air's planes? Still, the newest fancy livery on the block comes from British Airways, who have stenciled a design on several of their planes in honor of the upcoming London 2012 Olympics. The design: a dove, complete with feathers on the plane wings, a stylized beak and thick tail feathers that form the iconic BA vertical stabilize swipes. Even better: it's gold.

Nine—count 'em NINE—Airbus 319s have received the golden dove treatment and are up in the skies as of today. Keep an eye out for them around Europe mostly, such as today's BA 1420 from Heathrow to Copenhagen.

The design and implemtation process for the new special livery is a complicated process that resulted from a contest. Check out the mesmerizing time-lapse video for all the sweet details:

Two Airplanes That Have Facial Hair and One That Needs It

March 30, 2012 at 10:28 AM | by | Comments (0)

At this point we're dead sure that Virgin America is attempting to solidify their budding reputation as hipster airline of choice. C'mon—their last three big route announcements were Palm Springs, Philly and Portland and now—AND NOW—they've actually gone and given one of their planes facial hair.

Granted the unshaven A320 references the beard of San Francisco Giants pitcher Brian Wilson, as this Airbus is Virgin America's tribute livery to the baseball team. Hitting the skies on April 2, the plane (named "Fly Bye Baby") heralds the opening of the airline's sponsored Club Level lounge at AT&T Park (with mood lighting, natch) and the beginning of a contest.

Planespotters! On your marks, get set, go...spot the bearded airplane, snap a photo and share it using the hashtag #FlyTheBeard to be entered to win roundtrip tickets. Virgin will pick a winner once a month until the end of baseball season. Beyond that, a single winner will score season tickets for 2013. Niiiice. Full contest rules here.

Turkish Airlines Shows Off Its Latest Livery in 3D Time Lapse

Where: Turkey
March 29, 2012 at 11:22 AM | by | Comments (0)

We don’t know when Turkish Airlines hired the new marketing crew, but, ever since they snagged Kobe to sell seats on their planes, it seems like they're always on the offensive. This week they’re busy readying a new livery, and of course that means a 3D time-lapse video of all the excitement.

Unfortunately we don’t have a pair of 3D glasses hanging around Jaunted HQ, so we’re kind of just trying to imagine how much better the video would be if it were popping out of our laptop screen. Even without the added fun, it’s still pretty darn interesting to see the airline transform one of their planes.

Three Airplanes That Do Good for Charity

March 20, 2012 at 9:09 AM | by | Comments (0)

Airlines find many reasons to put fancy paint jobs on their airplanes. There's retro throwbacks, cartoon characters, sports teams and more, but we've spotted a few fun other ones lately—airplanes that pay tribute to charities:

Delta's Habitat for Humanity Boeing 767:
Slick blue swipes all around the plane and an unfamiliar logo on the tail? From a distance, it's hard to figure out what airline and airplane this is exactly, but a quick reach back into all that useless knowledge in the pockets of your mind, and you'll see it's actually a Habitat for Humanity logo. Delta supports the cause by arranging for their employees to build houses, but also by funding the organization via the airline's onboard recycling program. More details here.

Watch Out, EVA Air; Japan Airlines Has a 'Hello Kitty' Plane Too

Where: Japan
January 16, 2012 at 10:09 AM | by | Comments (0)

The carriers over in Japan just can’t get enough of wacky airplane liveries and specialty paint jobs, and that’s fine with us because we can’t stop talking about them. Japan Airlines is the latest to reveal a fresh look, and it’s a brand new tribute to the Hello Kitty empire.

It’s not just all fun either, as this latest color scheme (for this plane only) is hanging around to bring recognition and awareness about cervical cancer. Japan Airlines, TOKYO FM, and Sanrio are all joining forces as part of the "Hellosmile Project." The plan is to support prevention programs with the plane—it’s a Boeing 777 with the registration number JA8941—as it flies in and around Japan and the globe for the next year or so.

Air New Zealand Paints Their Itty-Bittiest Plane All Black

January 10, 2012 at 1:16 PM | by | Comment (1)

YES—another all-black plane has taken to the skies. For the third time, Air New Zealand is honoring the country's rugby team—the All Blacks—with an aircraft painted in the team colors, which would be all black (plus a little white and gray to form the fern of the team logo).

The first AirNZ plane to get the treatment was a Airbus A320, then they upgraded to repainting a Boeing 777. This time, however, AirNZ has chosen the smallest of their fleet—a Beech 1900D, newly completed.

Keep a look out for the tiny black plane (and two more upcoming) buzzing its propellers on AirNZ's shorter domestic routes, such as between Blenheim and Christchurch.

So Cool: ANA Threw a Special Plane Party at Tokyo-Haneda

January 4, 2012 at 4:40 PM | by | Comment (1)

Okay, this is just plain amazing.

On Christmas Eve, Japanese airline ANA managed to get all of their airplanes sporting special livery into Tokyo-Haneda Airport at the same time, parked at gates one after the other. The planning and background teamwork behind making an event like this happen in staggering; we only wish ANA had devoted more than a small Facebook photoset to the day.

Stars of the tarmac on December 24 were the Pokémon 747s, the 787 Dreamliners, the retro livery, Star Alliance livery and even more.

Just imagine if Southwest Airlines tried something like this. There'd be an Orca whale landing, followed by the state of Florida, followed by Bar Refaeli in a bikini (wait, is that plane still flying?).

Anyway, awesome job, ANA. Same time, same place next year?

Check Out ANA's Spiffy New Dreamliner Livery

Where: Japan
January 2, 2012 at 11:15 AM | by | Comments (0)

The first livery for the 787s. Not the new stuff.

Japan's All Nippon Airways has been quick to create some fancy new liveries and paint jobs for their fleet of brandy new Boeing 787 Dreamliners. However, the painters and workers in the hangars are still hard at work, as it looks like they’ll be using yet another special paint scheme for their latest deliveries.

As ANA gets some more and more new planes they’ll mix up the liveries just a little bit. The fresh batch of Dreamliners—these are the ones that will likely be the first to hit the nifty fifty—will still have “787” scrolled across the side, but the colors will be more aligned with the traditional ANA designs. This will also be the more permanent look, so expect this color scheme to be around for quite some time.

Here it is:
