What Is 'Snarge' and Why You Don't Want It On Your Flight

November 22, 2010 at 4:25 PM | by | Comments (0)

Up until today, our vocabulary remained free of the word "Snarge", but now that we know what it means, we are totally going to find ways to use it. This icky-sounding term is pretty damn icky for sure; it's what bird remains are called, but not just any bird remains; it's the leftovers of birds found in the engines of airliners that suffer bird strikes.

Even before "The Miracle on the Hudson" hit the water after bird strikes took out its engines, the danger of flocks living around New York City's airports was well documented. Now the issue is back, after the pilot of yesterday's Delta Flight 30, which blew an engine after taking off from JFK bound for Moscow, claims that a bird strike caused the failure. Notable extra fact: the flights had Leonardo DiCaprio onboard! As of now, no "snarge" has been found in the engine, but the NTSB isn't ruling out the possibility, although it's probably just that a compressor stalled and the engine malfunctioned.

OMG. 'Catch Me If You Can' is Coming to Broadway

September 20, 2010 at 3:47 PM | by | Comments (0)

Cue hyperventilation. The New York Times' Arts Beat has great news today: the book/movie Catch Me If You Can will make a Broadway debut next Spring, with an official opening date in April 2011. "Catch Me If You Can," which is now being mounted as musical, tells the true story of con artist Frank Abagnale Jr., who lived a dashing life on the run around the world in the 1960s, cashing forged checks and posing as a Pan Am pilot. The airline estimated that Frank successfully flew 1,000,000 miles to 26 countries on over 250 flights with them, never having to actually do any work along the way.

Abagnale's life story is a riveting one, and the musical only captures the most dashing part: the years during which he played pilot, sleeping with stewardesses and enjoying a cosmopolitan lifestyle completely bought by stealing. It's just too bad that the musical is due to be performed in a real Broadway theatre, rather than inside New York-JFK's old TWA Terminal 5 building, where portions of the movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio were filmed.

Preview performances will begin in March 2011, and you can be sure that we'll let you know when tickets become available.

Where: Sardinia, Italy

While Leonardo Dicaprio's latest movie, Inception, is confusing audiences across the country, his summer vacation plans are a no-brainer. Leo and his new bff, billionaire Vladimir Dorinin, are currently getting some much needed R & R on Vlad's yacht in Sardinia with their hot model girlfriends.

Leonardo and his girlfriend, Bar Refaeli, joined Vladimir and his gal pal, Naomi Campbell, on the boat a few weeks ago. The foursome has spent much of their time in the billionaire playground of Porto Cervo, where Leo and Vlad were spotted doing yoga with a personal trainer yesterday.

Ellen Page Annoys Leo DiCaprio with Her Love for Halifax

Where: Halifax, NS, Canada
July 16, 2010 at 12:35 PM | by | Comments (0)

Last night, Ellen Page dropped some knowledge about her hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia on Jay Leno. During her Tonight Show appearance, Ellen told Jay that she talks about Halifax so much it annoys her friends and co-stars, like Leonardo DiCaprio.

She also shared three fun facts about Halifax with the audience: 1) They have the "most bars per-capita in all of North America," 2) "It's a fun place, you guys," and 3) Halifax has "the second largest harbor in the world behind Sydney, Australia."

Leonardo DiCaprio Is Making Out And Dodging Explosions In Paris

Where: Paris, France
August 19, 2009 at 10:24 AM | by | Comments (0)

Protecting Ellen Page from flying debris and making out with Marion Cotillard is all in a week’s work for Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo, Ellen and Marion are all in Paris this week filming the contemporary Sci-Fi thriller Inception, which is being directed by The Dark Knight’s Christopher Nolan. Very little is known about the film except that it takes place in "the architecture of the mind," whatever that means.

What we do know for sure is that Leo and Ellen filmed at Cafe Debussy and near the Pont de Bir-Hakeim on the Seine yesterday. This isn't the first time on the big screen for the bridge; it was also featured in National Treasure 2, Munich and Last Tango in Paris.

Leo invited a few family members along on the Paris trip, including his mother who seemed to be doting on her famous son. We wouldn’t be surprised if Leo put his family up at the ultra lux Four Seasons George V while they're visiting him in Paris. Right now, the hotel is offering a special Bed and Breakfast Package that includes a full American breakfast daily for up to two adults at the hotel’s La Galerie, Le Cinq restaurant or through In-Room Dining for $1170.00 a night. For that kind of money, you too could probably also be making out with Marion Cotillard.

Stars Aren't Like Us. (Because They're Still On The Beach.)

January 5, 2009 at 8:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

Around the world, the last New Year's Eve overpartiers are finally crawling into work--but not your favorite celebrities. We figure anyone on a beach this week is just rubbing it in, so let's examine the culprits:

"Heroes" costars Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia walked along a beach in Bora Bora toward their private villa. Also in the Pacific, Kate Moss took her boyfriend Jamie Hince to Surin Beach on Phuket, where she once got married (in a non-binding ceremony) to ex Pete Doherty. Might history repeat itself?

Meanwhile, among those dipping their toes into the Atlantic were Amy Winehouse, who seemed not to leave her house in 2008 at all until this trip to St. Lucia. Jude Law stepped off the London set of "Sherlock Holmes" long enough to take his kids to Copacabana Beach in Rio. And the celebrity-ridden beaches of Cabo provided Leonardo DiCaprio and Bar Refaeli with a beach holiday and Jennifer Aniston a potential respite from the rumors about her very Mayer Christmas. Must be nice! We're going to go put another sweater on.

Mexico Travel: Leo's Last Hurrah

Where: Cancun, Mexico
October 14, 2008 at 2:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

Leonardo DiCaprio and model girlfriend Bar Refaeli hunt for the suntan lotion on a beach in Cancun, Mexico over the weekend. Sadly, Leo appears to have packed that weird chin-beard he wears in his latest movie, Ridley Scott's "Body of Lies."

Back in December, trend-trackers predicted that travel to Central and South America would continue to rise in '08, and certainly many celebs have chosen to vacay in our neighbor to the south.

But given the economic climate, are people looking forward to any vacations in 2009? Forget "climate change" travel and learning-focused trips (two more trends predicted for this year); what's going to be the new hot trip? Taking one at all?

Leo's Next Role: Parisian Tourist

Where: Paris, France
October 22, 2007 at 8:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

Taking pictures, sampling the local cuisine -- even a star as bright as Leonardo DiCaprio can enjoy the simple pleasures of being a stranger in a strange land. In this case, it's Paris, where he and actor friend Lukas Haas spent a day visiting the Sacré-Coeur Basilica in the neighborhood of Montmartre and chowing down on crepes from a street stand.

Built between 1875 and 1914, the basilica has appeared in movies like the original "Sabrina" and, of course, the Montmartre valentine "Amélie." It's certainly a great place for pictures: Situated at the highest point in Paris, you can see most of the city from the church.

Leo Loves The Screamers in California

Looks like we're not the only ones who enjoy a little roller coaster action. That's Leonardo DiCaprio and his girlfriend, model Bar Rafaeli, on the Xcelerator at Knott's Berry Farm in California.

The star couple may be pleased to know the Xcelerator hasn't made our list of the world's scariest coasters, although it does take lucky riders from 0 to 82 in 2.3 seconds when it launches. Leo could probably afford his own -- the coaster, which opened in 2002, cost Knott's "just" $13 million.

Leonardo DiCaprio Takes a Respectable Vacation in Hawaii

August 11, 2006 at 12:12 PM | by | Comments (0)

Remember the days of the Pussy Patrol?  When Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and their lesser-known accomplices terrorized the ladies of the world with their decadent, no-limit ways?  Those days are long gone, as the boys' most recent vacation shows.  They went to Hawaii and hung out on the beach...along with various girlfriends, fiancees, and buns in the ovens.  The increased estrogen only means fancier digs.  Here are two of the Big Island's best hotels, conveniently located directly next to each other in Kona-Kailua.

Kona Village Resort - This all-inclusive resort is one of the oldest hotels in Hawaii, and it charms the pants off everyone who goes there (accordingly, it's a very popular honeymoon spot).  The guest rooms are all freestanding bungalows scattered about the property, making it ideal for privacy.  The beach  is excellent for snorkeling, with a reef that's home to turtles, octupii, all kinds of fish, and somewhat terrifyingly, moray eels.

Four Seasons Hualalai - This is the much more refined of the two hotels.  Well, mostly.  It's the hotel Whitney Houston stayed at seven years ago when she tried to smuggle pot back onto the mainland.  Drug addicts notwithstanding, the hotel has a very elegant feel, and provides little details like water bottles for car trips and cakes on birthdays.  The beach isn't as good at this hotel, so they've provided the "King's Pond," an enclosed salt water pool with the full array of marine life.  It's pretty cool, and perfect for more sedate snorkelers.
