How KLM is Turning Used Cooking Oil Into Flights Between Amsterdam and New York

"It really isn't smelly!"

That's the assertion given by KLM to press and passengers on Friday, as the first-ever series of biofuel-powered intercontinental flights was inaugurated.

All is normal inside the aircraft, and indeed passengers may have no idea they are flying on a history-making jet, unless they see the proud "we fly on biofuels" statement painted on the side. Outside, two fueling trucks pump the plane's tanks full of a mix of regular kerosene and biofuel manufactured from used cooking oil. According to the AP, the process to make this magic fuel goes a little something like this: "the waste oil from frying up crawfish, cracklins and other Cajun specialties is refined at a Louisiana plant, then trucked to JFK." Sounds simple, huh?

Hey, who's up for another week of shouting about whether the sequester is going to prevent TSA agents from doing their jobs? We wrote about the political back-and-forth last week and explained why the debate is surreal bordering on inexplicable. But if you're a travel junkie or a political junkie or just really hate yourself, here are links saying it's going to be a disaster (one, two) and here are links saying you don't have to worry (one, two). Consider yourself briefed.

Not to get all emo, but we remember a time when writing about TSA was fun. The word "stupid" came up a lot (a lot). Now it's all about economic disaster and crying, disabled 3 year olds. What happened to the days when airport security stories were just brief little reminders that people are totally insane, is what we've been asking ourselves.

JetBlue's Terminal 5 at JFK is Getting a Lounge! With Showers! And Free Booze!

Hot breakfast sandwiches. Free WiFi. A power outlet for each comfy chair. A slick bar stocking all the good stuff for complimentary cocktails. Cheese plates. Private restrooms with showers. Macbooks.

Hello, this is airport heaven.

Though it kinda sounds like we've been describing an ultra-premium airline lounge for elite flyers at some exotic international airport, all this is in fact coming to a new lounge within Terminal 5 at New York-JFK, aka the home of JetBlue. It's to be called Airspace, and travelers will find it come May 2013 after security, near Gate 24.

Better Wine, Better Coffee, Better Service Coming to Delta's TransCon Flights

If you’re thinking of taking a transcontinental flight this summer you might want to check out Delta’s fares before selecting your carrier. We know they already have some stuff to make the ride a little bit better, like pretty much guaranteed WiFi, and there’s even a little more room—if you’re willing to pay for it—thanks to their Economy Comfort seating options. Now they’re kicking things up a notch, by boosting their offerings on some of their longest domestic flights down in the lower 48.

Flights between New York-JFK and spots like Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco are all getting the service upgrades. A lot of the stuff is for those flyersin the BusinessElite cabin, but there’s still enough good stuff leftover for those stuck in the back. Up front there’s going to be sparkling wine to get the party started, and the flight attendants will be passing out copies of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today.

Rumor Has It LA's Pizzeria Mozza Will Be Landing at JFK Airport

Celebrity favorite Pizzeria Mozza is one of the go-to spots for pizza and Italian fare over in Los Angeles. Famous foodies like Nancy Silverton, Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich are behind the venture, and the place already has outposts as near as Newport Beach and as far as Singapore. Thankfully they’re looking to expand once again, and this time they’re going across the country.

If you guessed that they’d be moving into a spot in New York City you’re correct; however, it won't be the easy choice of Manhattan. Pizzeria Mozza will instead set up shop in Queens, over at JFK Airport.

Watch Supermodel Coco Rocha Dance Through Security at TWA's Terminal 5

Okay, travelers. Put on your dancing shoes because supermodel Coco Rocha has just introduced a little dance we're going to call the Airside Slide. Earlier today, Coco announced the airing of the video accompanying her work on the Spring/Summer 2013 campaign for french luxury fashion house Longchamp, and it's in this video that she and another model (Liisa Winkler) boogie down under the roof of the old Eero Saarinen-designed TWA Terminal at JFK Airport.

The premise is simple: Coco's running to catch a flight. She passes through security but keeps beeping. The TSA agent steps out to frisk her, at which point the music starts Coco spontaneously dancing, joined in the moves by Liisa.

JFK Airport Was a Little Empty Yesterday

If you were planning on flying to London yesterday, you're probably scrambling to figure out how to make that happen today as the Nor'easter storm blizzard struck New York City and closed the area airports for nearly 24 hours.

We were one of the lucky ones—one of those flights not marked with an angry orange "cancelled" on the departure board. And now here we sit in the 72-degree beauty of Hong Kong after Cathay Pacific flight 831 not only left JFK on time, but even managed to soar for 16 hours without turbulence.

The airports of the East Coast are returning to normal as airplanes return and salt trucks and plows work overtime, so here's hoping no one has to see a board with flight statuses like this again anytime soon.

Smell That Airport Air: Rooftop Sky Decks Coming to Delta Sky Clubs at JFK and ATL

Picture this: you've just ordered a cocktail and, while a bartender shakes it up, you catch a glimpse of a tail of a Delta 747 gliding by on its way to the runway to take off for Tokyo. The sun is shining on your face as you sip your drink and watch another Delta jet gracefully lift its wings. It's almost time for your turn.

Such a relaxing scene is the stuff of frequent traveler dreams, or was, since Delta is making this a reality with the introduction of open-air Sky Decks at two of their Sky Club locations. Under construction as we type, the first-ever outdoor terraces in the Delta system will be found at New York-JFK and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson as soon as four months from now.

Onboard Concorde: What It Was Like to Fly Mach 2 Over the Atlantic Ocean

This week marks the 37th Anniversary of the maiden commercial flight of the Concorde. To properly celebrate, let's relieve history a bit by traveling along with photographer/videographer Joe Corrigan as he remembers his Concorde flights, roundtrip JFK-LHR in July 2003 on the British Airways supersonic birds G-BOAC and G-BOAF.

I don't know quite what it was about Concorde, but ever since I first saw her as a kid, I was mesmerised. That shape, those lines—there was something about her that drew me in. I was 14 the first time I saw her with my own eyes, as my my uncle had discovered Concorde would fly into Sydney, my home town, on a round-the-world charter. Together we headed to the airport to see her land.

That aircraft, F-BVFC, zoomed in and landed with full reverse and later took off with full afterburner as I watched from afar. I was hooked. The experience was not only visual and aural, but earth-shaking. Everything in the vicinity shuddered under the engine power; you could feel Concorde slice through the air and this in itself made it all the more visceral. It became a dream of mine to fly on her, one I never thought likely to come true.

Girl Power: The Photo of Female Pilots That Nearly Caused an Airport Controversy

When was the last time you flew in a plane piloted by a woman? What about two women, both pilot and co-pilot? It's possible to not even know since passengers rarely see their flight crews much anymore, but they are up there. Trust us.

Starting this week, travelers on Lufthansa will get to see the very rare occurrence of two women in the cockpit...before even stepping onboard a plane. Famous Berlin-based photographer Kiki Kausch has installed her triptych, titled "A380 Female Cockpit," at the JFK Business Class lounge.

The three images capture two normal Lufthansa pilots, Fleur and Karin, at work in their office, which just happens to be the cockpit of one of the airline's A380 superjumbos en route from Frankfurt to Singapore (LH 778). The photos were actually taken as the plane cruised high above Afghanistan, the ethereal light of sunrise over the Hindukush illuminating the women.
