The Best Domestic Airline Of 2010 Is...

December 31, 2010 at 1:12 PM | by | Comment (1)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2010 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics, encompassing everything from nudie scans to tarmac delays. Needless to say, we're ready for 2011, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2010 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

First off, we have to say that there will be no award for Best International Airline because we simply haven't been on all of them to even come close to judging them. However, we have flown every domestic American airline, including many that don't even exist anymore, so we're concluding our run of 2010's Jaunted Travel Awards by declaring JetBlue the Best Domestic Airline of 2010.

How did good ol' JetBlue manage to steal back the title after three straight years of dominance in this category by Virgin America? Well, by keeping it real...but also by making 2010 the year they blazed trails and truly, truly focused on what passengers want...

Forget that whole story about the honeymoon murder that happened in the slums of Cape Town, because we're pretty convinced that it was a set-up made by the husband, and plus it is soiling what has otherwise been a banner year for South Africa, our Destination of the Year 2010.

Sure, they had the awesome World Cup, but the energy began earlier in the year when we named them one of the top three places for a medical vacation, owing to their reputation as a mecca for plastic surgery and recovery. Then The Bachelor's Jason Mesnick chose South Africa for his honeymoon, as did Chelsea Clinton, and Kim Kardashian made her inaugural visit to the country with sister Khloe in tow.

And then there was the World Cup...

First, let's be honest. We really, really wanted to name the "pay-to-pee" and standing passenger concepts from Ryanair's Micheal O'Leary as 2010's worst idea, but there's just one problem...all that happened in 2009. Regardless, there were plenty more bad ideas that happened this year, and the winner for 2010's stupid airline idea is Spirit Airlines' carry-on fees.

The Craziest Travel News Story Of 2010 Is...

August 2010 was one of the hottest months of the year, and it was also the month that a certain JetBlue flight attendant reached his boiling point with argumentative passengers. Steve Slater, now forever better known as "Slip 'n Slide Slater," responded to a disruptive passenger by completely going bonkers. After arriving at JFK Airport, Slater got on the PA system to cuss out the passengers, then grabbed two beers and his luggage, opened the cabin door and deployed the emergency inflatable slide, and took off down it and across the tarmac to reach his car.

Last December we awarded the 2009 Biggest Villain Jaunty to the TSA. As we closed the post, we predicted that, if the agency kept up their nonsense, "2010 could become the year they become synonymous with Big Brother tactics and general ineptness." Prediction confirmed.

And thus does TSA rack up another Biggest Villain Jaunty.

The Naughtiest Flight Attendants Of 2010 Are...

What is with flight attendants? We just can't seem to go even a few months without a gaggle of them stripping for a calendar shoot or doing risque things to airplane tires in the name of advertising the airline. Recently, British Airways took naughty onboard photos of themselves , the men and women of Cebu Pacific danced to Katy Perry in the aisles, and Air Comet, Mexicana and Ryanair all did the calendar thing. And yet, none of those stunts equal the super sexed-up antics of Russian flight attendants.

2010's Celebrity Traveler Of The Year Is...

December 30, 2010 at 1:08 PM | by | Comments (0)

For someone who's only "real job" is being a reality star, Kim Kardashian sure has had a busy year.

She kicked off 2010 by outing an air marshal on an American flight when she tweeted, "I'm on the airplane...love wifi! I am sitting next to an Air Marshall! Jim the air marshal makes me feel safe!" She may have felt safer but the rest of us, not so much.

We write about travel all day here at Jaunted, and rest assured we're out there living it as well. We're a very mobile group of writers, all afflicted with the severest wanderlust, and thus it's no surprise that our archives are full of "Field Trips." Jaunted Field Trips are what we call week-long series of travel writing, where a Jaunted writer reports back from all corners of the globe, complete with photos, anecdotes, and tips to help you plan a trip to the same spot. The vast majority of these trips come out of our own pockets, and any exceptions are noted.

Of the many great series from 2010, the one that stood out for us was our front- and behind-the-scenes trip to opening day of Universal Studios Orlando's The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

The Sweetest Travel Deal Of 2010 Is...

Had you been willing to part with a cool $499 or $699 at the start of this last fall, you would have had the chance to join hundreds of other travelers in scoring the Sweetest Travel Deal of 2010: JetBlue's All You Can Jet Pass for one month of (mostly) unlimited travel on JetBlue's and lo. 2010 was AYCJ's second year of filling fall's empty seats with intrepid little traveler butts for the small three-digit sum, at a price most other airlines woudld't even charge for one flight in regular business class

The Worst Travel Experience Of 2010 Is...

December 30, 2010 at 1:07 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2010 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics, encompassing everything from nudie scans to tarmac delays. Needless to say, we're ready for 2011, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2010 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

Nobody likes spending 7 hours on an airplane only to end up going nowhere. But that's exactly what went down in late 2009, and the public outcry over conditions inside airplanes stuck between their gates and the sky was loud enough to get the Tarmac Delay law passed, which officially went into effect in April. So in 2009, the worst travel experience would have been enduring an 8-hour-plus tarmac delay, but in 2010 it's the runaround of on-the-tarmac, back-to-the-gate, on-the-tarmac caused by the resulting delay law.

Although it's designed to help passengers essentially help captive in cramped conditions on planes, occasionally it's quite the nuisance. We've experience it firsthand when, while on a flight that sat for 3 hours at JFK, we had to return to the gate although the go-ahead for take-off came not 10 minutes after the plane went through the trouble of heading back. And what's more is that any passengers who wanted to get off, would be off for good. That's no good.

The Hottest Travel Innovation Of 2010 Is...

This year, travelers were hugely spoiled with easy and affordable access to in-flight WiFi. After all, Google was giving it away for free to celebrate the holidays! Our only wish was that the magic of internet at 35,000 feet could be extended to places like the middle of the ocean or above the North Pole. Thankfully, Lufthansa knew what we wanted when they delivered the year’s hottest travel innovation: long-haul in-flight WiFi.
