Finally! JetBlue Releases Its First iPhone App: The Full Review

February 3, 2012 at 11:11 AM | by | Comments (0)

Alright. What's the one thing you've been waiting forever for from JetBlue? Duh, in-flight WiFi...besides that. Yes, a freaking iPhone app!

Well, late last night while thoughts of Terra Blue Chips and direct flights to Santo Domingo danced through your heads, the airline's very first iPhone app quietly snuck out into the iTunes app store. It's free of course, and blue and orange, but is it any good?

To keep our opinions short and sweet, yes—it's sooooo good. Like, spread-the-word good. Even if you've never flown JetBlue and don't have any upcoming flights booked, we'd say get the thing for its well-designed flight search and booking (wanderlust fodder right there) and cute little extras, like the ability to use your iPhone photos to create funky postcards, shared straight from the app.

Four iPhone Photo Apps We're Freaking Out Over Right Now

Where: Singapore
February 1, 2012 at 12:33 PM | by | Comments (0)

Three Singapore art deco buildings we captured and then combined using Diptic

Okay, sure we're totally obsessed of late with iPhone photo-sharing app Instagram (find us by searching for user "jaunted" within the app!), but it's been a thing for us that, before embarking on a big trip, we'll not only download the best city maps and guide apps for our destination, but we'll also look around for new photo apps to up our iPhoneography game.

Thus, before hitting the road to Singapore, we bought four awesome iPhone photo apps that really worked so well, we were spreading their gospel by word of mouth. Now it's time to share them with you:

· Diptic
Perhaps you've seen these uploaded into Instagram and wondered "what the heck?" Yea, this app essentially allows you to combine several photos from your iPhone into one, combined spread much like setting up one of those old-school family photo frames that ends up dusty on a mantle. The layouts are flexible, and you can adjust each picture for size, color, brightness, etc before saving the finished triptych. See another example here.
- Cost $0.99 at the iTunes store

Some of our recent shots on Instagram

Yo. We already told you last week that we're now on Instagram (username: jaunted), but we thought we'd give you a fair warning that things are about to quadruple in awesome as we prepare for a late winter and spring insanely packed with international travel. That means more awesome, behind-the-scenes travel shots on Instagram from our writers...wherever they may be on this blue globe of ours.

Airlines and Travel Brands to Follow Right Now on Instagram

December 27, 2011 at 1:09 PM | by | Comments (0)

And just like that, social photo sharing app Instagram is super hot. Sure it's only just celebrated its one-year anniversary as an iPhone app, but recent contests and exposure given to it by brands and influential figures in social media have pushed it over the edge. Heck, we jumped in head first! And we're freaking loving it. (Follow us by searching "jaunted" & "hotelchatter" in the app).

It's not just people posting images of their kids eating birthday cake or close-ups of kitty paws, either; Instagram seems to be spreading most rapidly among those interested in design, architecture, analogue photography, nature and—of course—the rest of the world. This is where travel images enter the game, and the airlines are paying attention.

We ran a fine-toothed comb through Instagram to find the airlines you need to follow now, and who else to watch:

The Latest on the Alec Baldwin, Words With Friends, American Airlines Insanity

December 12, 2011 at 8:25 AM | by | Comments (0)

Stop us if you've already seen this, but Alec Baldwin took his Words With Friends cause to SNL's Weekend Update on Saturday night to, well...apologize to himself.

In case you've been living in a cave the last several days, the story goes a little something like this: Baldwin was sitting on an American Airlines plane at LAX, playing the mobile app word game "Words With Friends." The plane door had already been closed (the cue to turn off electronic devices), and Alec refused flight attendant demands to turn off his device. He continued playing the Scrabble-like game, even retreating to the airplane bathroom in anger. So the plane kicked him off.

Alec tweeted his frustrations before being placed on a later flight, vowing never to fly American Airlines again. This was followed by a media flurry over the whole juicy ordeal, Alec mysteriously closing his Twitter account, and an offer from Greyhound to come play Words With Friends with their CEO on their buses.

So, back to the SNL video....

Delta Brings Live Baggage Tracking to Your Phone Just in Time for Turkey Day

November 23, 2011 at 9:43 AM | by | Comments (0)

If Aunt Edna’s Bean Salad isn’t really exciting you this holiday season then there’s a new option from Delta that may be somewhat entertaining—and useful. We knew that Delta allows one and all to follow their checked baggage throughout its journey, but now they’re bringing the feature to their mobile apps.

With the latest version of the Delta app, you’ll now be able to see where your bag is—and where your bag has been—through its journey from check-in to drop off on the baggage carrousel. It’s just like tracking a package from those guys with the brown trucks, so expect status updates every time your bag is scanned and transferred from one spot to another.

Know Your Boeings from Your Airbus? Play Lufthansa's Card Game App to Prove It

November 1, 2011 at 1:35 PM | by | Comments (0)

Alright. How well do you know your airplanes, specifically from the Lufthansa fleet? Sure, the Airbus A380 is easy to spot and there are a few simple tricks to telling the difference between a Boeing and an Airbus, but what about when we're talking DC-10s or CRJs?

For the true #avgeeks (aviation geeks), Lufthansa has just released a new free iPhone/Android app card game called "Lufthansa Top Trumps." Top Trumps is simple and quick to play, and is a test-your-knowledge game requiring you to choose the right stat for a given airplane. Example: a photo of an Airbus A330 is shown. Pick which of the listed stats is correct (answer: 221 seats). There may be more than one correct stat, so keep that in mind.

CNN Peers into the Future of Airline Mobile Apps

October 11, 2011 at 1:52 PM | by | Comments (0)

Not to be immodest, but we we think we've worked out a pretty good system for guessing when mobile and social media travel apps will work out. It's not particularly complicated. If an app helps people do stuff they want to do, in the way that people want to do that stuff, we lean toward success.

If it's based on the hope that people will start doing things in totally new ways—e.g. sharing their travel itineraries with everyone they know from high school, college, and work—we tend to express less enthusiasm.

So for instance, when we found out that Delta was planning to sell tickets through Facebook, we predicted troubled times because there's no reason anyone would book tickets that way. And wouldn't you know it, the airline ended up trading over one million unique website visitors during a three-month period in exchange for just over 1,000 Facebook fans (concluded Delta's VP for eCommerce: Facebook "clearly is not going to be our biggest channel"—no kidding).

Alaska Airlines' iPhone App Will Hook You Up With a Mobile Boarding Pass

September 14, 2011 at 8:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

It’s been a little bit of time since we saw the very first mobile boarding passes, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to join the party. They’ve got WiFi all over Alaska, and now Alaska Airlines is bringing mobile boarding passes to their latest version of their travel app for iPhone and iPod Touch users.

Next time you’re flying up north or to the islands, don’t waste that valuable toner or ink; it’s all available online and in your pocket. Alaska Airlines thinks the new app is awesome and that it’s like a personal concierge service—though that may be a slight exaggeration—but it’s still pretty darn snazzy and definitely worthwhile.
