Plane Spotting Isn't the Wurst at Hamburg Airport's Coffee To Fly

Where: Holtkoppel 100, Hamburg, Germany, 22415

If you're ready for the big leagues of plane spotting, then the place to do with a cup of hot cocoa in hand is just outside the fences a Germany's Hamburg International Airport, at a little food stand called "Coffee To Fly." This shop, which also will happily sell you little sandwiches, muffins, beer and even a 2 Euro glass of Glühwein (a hot, mulled wine), occupies prime plane spotting property on a hill known as the "Fotografenbrücke," or "photograph bridge." From here, Hamburg's runways are laid out in front of you.

If, on the day you go spotting, there's a some exotic aircraft expected, like perhaps a giant Antonov cargo plane or a surprise visit from an A380, you'll be elbow-to-elbow with photographers for whom this a true passion. Read a great story about these guys here.

Behold! The First Pictures of Lufthansa's New Airbus A380

May 19, 2010 at 4:58 AM | by | Comments (4)

It's nearly 6am here at Hamburg Finkenwerder, the private airfield (which is more like a mini-city) of Airbus, and we're writing this in the middle of the press conference to hand over the first A380 to Lufthansa.

In only a couple more hours, after the pomp and circumstance dies down, we'll be boarding the superjumbo for her inaugural flight from Hamburg to Frankfurt. Be sure to stick around and follow along with us, but right now, we can't wait to show you what are the first unofficial photos of the Lufthansa A380, which we shot ourselves only moments ago as the first group of press to arrive on site here at XFW.

Check them out, after the jump!

Follow Along With Us On Lufthansa's First A380 Flight Tomorrow!

Where: Frankfurt International Airport, Frankfurt, Germany

A tail stands guard over Lufthansa's headquarters outside of Frankfurt Airport

While you're safely snug in your beds and snoring away tonight, we'll be rising bright and early on Germany time to hop from Frankfurt Airport to Hamburg's Finkenwerder Field, otherwise known as the private airport of Airbus. What're we doing there, you ask? Naturally, we've hoofed it overseas for the First Flight of Lufthansa's new Airbus A380, which goes down tomorrow at 2pm CET (8am EST) when the airline takes delivery of the plane, currently the largest commercial airliner in the world.

If you're awake, the festivities will begin far before then, and thanks to the rumor that Finkenwerder will have WiFi, we'll be tweeting and blogging live from the event. And it doesn't stop there! Although we're one of more than 2,000 guests who get to bask in the A380's presence, we're also totally hopping onboard the plane as part of the 560 on the first flight from XFW to FRA. Know what that means? We'll have exclusive first looks at their ridiculously luxurious new first class cabin, business class and economy...all kept tightly under wraps until tomorrow.

How to follow along, after the jump!
