Video Interlude: Australian Surf, Sand, and Sun in Stunning Time-Lapse

September 10, 2014 at 1:36 PM | by | Comments (0)

As the temperatures drop and days shorten, the folks at Gold Coast Tourism really want to remind you that the opposite is happening Down Under in Australia's. Gold Coast's beach metropolis is synonymous with endless summer, and is the star of this new gorgeous time-lapse video.

From sunrise to sunset, the "glitter strip" comes alive with waves crashing on the shore, lots of SPF and plenty of shots that show off the beauty of the area. With obligatory shots of Q1 skyscraper (with its highest building climb in the southern hemisphere), and plenty of surfers catching some swells, this four-minute spot is a must-watch for a dreary day.

Yesterday, we gave you a first hand account of our Aussie contributor's impressions on his first ride in a Dreamliner. Now we can finally show you the photos inside and out of the newest Jetstar aircraft to take to the skies.

This is the first 787 for Australia and it has understandably created much fanfare down under. For the first few weeks, the plane will be carting Aussies around the country between Melbourne, Cairns, and the Gold Coast, but will then transition to flights to Bali-Denpasar.

Last week we brought you the inaugural of Jetstar's newest little toy, a shiny Boeing 787 Dreamliner. As the first 787 in Australia, the plane is affording a new batch of travelers their first taste of modern aviation innovation, and our Aussie contributor is one such flyer. Here, he shares his impressions of a first flight on the Dreamliner:

As soon as Jetstar announced their newest bird would be flying from Melbourne to the Gold Coast, I jumped online and purchased tickets, psyched to finally fly this state-of-the-art aircraft for myself, after watching what felt like every other continent get their chance. Sandcastle Airplane!

Where: Australia
February 18, 2013 at 4:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

While most of the the US is still shivering and donning scarves, it's the height of summer in Australia and Qantas will not let us forget it. In fact, they've set up the ultimate sand castle display right in Sydney's Circular Quay.

The 'Flying Kangaroo' recently (re)launched flights from Sydney to Gold Coast and wanted to draw some unique attention to it. Since the "glitter strip" is well-known for its beach culture —we're talking about the Surfers Paradise— what better way to turn some heads with a sculpture meticulously carved into the shape of a plane full of passengers heading to soak up the sun.

Just in case you haven't walked within a few feet of the greeting card section of your local drugstore, this week is Valentine's Day. Consider this fair warning if you haven't already scrambled to buy chocolates or flowers, but if you don't have a special one just yet, Jetstar has the solution to your problem. "LoveJet"! (cue the cheesy music)

The Australian low-cost carrier has hooked up with Aussie dating site, RSVP, to bring the world some real (multi-)mile-high dating. Last year, we saw KLM try to pair passengers looking for interesting conversation and a possible love connection, but Jetstar is actually planning on making the relationship magic happen.

Count Your Winnings: The Four Giant Casinos of Australia

Where: Australia
December 10, 2012 at 12:58 PM | by | Comments (0)

Travelers are flocking to Australia to do more than pet a kangaroo or snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. Apparently the majority of tourists are going Down Under to scream "Winner, winner, Chicken Dinner!" Yeah, we're talking about placing big bets.

Gambling and casinos are legal in Australia and the pastime has become part of the fabric of the culture. Think of it as a smaller-scaled Vegas, but an entire country. Just like their counterparts in the US desert, many casinos in Oz are mega-resorts that attract the entire family, but with areas dedicated to high-rollers wanting more than the thrill of winning (or losing).
