May 17, 2012 at 1:13 PM | by | Comments (0)

Are you psyched for Memorial Day yet? It's Monday, May 28, in case you hadn't yet penciled it into your iCal, and with the nice weather the US has had so far, it's going to be a doozy for traveling.

We know Foursquare is already beyond excited. The location-based social networking app is bracing for all the airport, airplane, turnpike, backyard BBQ and lobster shack check-ins that are sure to come from the long holiday weekend, and they've just shared with us the most popular airport (and other travel centers) from past Memorial Days, including the most checked-into city pairs!

Why You'll Want to Check In at Cathay Pacific's SFO Lounge...on Foursquare

April 6, 2012 at 2:52 PM | by | Comments (0)

Flying out of San Francisco International anytime soon? You're going to wish you were on the other side of the sliding glass doors that lead into Cathay Pacific's brand new Business/First Class lounge, and not just because airline lounges are awesome, but because Cathay is running a Foursquare special this month for flyers who check in to the lounge using the location-based social networking app.

If you're a flyer with access to the lounge, be sure to fire up Foursquare on your phone and show your checkin to the lounge receptionist. For that, you'll receive a free Cathay Pacific "keepsake," as well as be entered to score an upgrade on your next flight if you leave a business card.

Amsterdam's So Hot Right Now: New Foursquare Badge and Floriade 2012

April 5, 2012 at 6:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

Pay attention for a second. There are two things you need today. Like, right now. And they're both about the Netherlands.

First, today marks the beginning of the Floriade, a massive festival of—you guessed it—flowers. The Holland Floriade only comes around every 10 years, so this World Horticultural Festival hasn't happened since 2002. It's not in Amsterdam actually, but near the German border in the Dutch town of Venlo. There you'll find themed mini-worlds (like the real World Expo), 100+ gardens, acrobatic shows, green architecture and technology exhibits, plus Europe's biggest indoor flower show.

There's no need to rush, so long as you hit the Floriade before it closes on October 7. The high summer will of course be the busiest time, but we'd imagine that September could be ideal. Here's the official site.

Finally, a Foursquare Badge for People Who Hate Taking Taxis

March 22, 2012 at 4:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

Update! One day after releasing the badge, Foursquare has made it an expertise one. That means "leveling up" is now possible. Yippee!

Foursquare, the location-based social app, has been on quite the run with issuing new badges for those who like to get out and explore beyond their city...but into the world. From Baltimore to Moscow, the focus has been on highlighting individual cities. Today, however, the table turns to transportation and how we get around those cities. Please put your hands together for the new Trainspotter badge.

It's essentially the train version of the popular Jetsetter badge, which has existed since the early days of Foursquare a couple years back.

March 8, 2012 at 12:35 PM | by | Comments (0)

Have you had heard enough of Foursquare's newest city badges? Tough—the flood is only just beginning as Foursquare announced yesterday that a slew of fresh world badges is on the horizon, via an international contest. There's 15 new badges up for grabs, and Foursquare wants to bestow them upon three cities each in Africa, the Americas (minus the U.S.), Asia, Europe and Oceania.

Alas, the prize for winning isn't monetary; just fill up a list of the favorite things in a city and, if it's really good, it'll earn that city its very won Foursquare badge. You have until March 23 to list the cool stuff, but the news of the contest also comes with this exciting tidbit:

"Bangkok, Rio, Buenos Aires, Amsterdam and Jakarta: we already have badges planned for your cities in the near future (yay!)."

Yay indeed! Now, how to submit? Here you go, straight from Foursquare:

February 8, 2012 at 2:56 PM | by | Comments (0)

So, while Foursquare was churning out all those shiny new international city badges, they were also thinking about good ol' America, and the fact that there are plenty of towns with awesome venues that would benefit from the exposure and tourism that comes with a special badge. A contest pitted individual Foursquare user-created lists against each other, and the winners were named today.

These winners, and therefore the next cities to have their own Foursquare badges, are: Baltimore, MD; Richmond, VA; Des Moines, IA; Oklahoma City, OK; and Stamford, CT.

Some pretty random choices in there, but they must pack a punch considering other cities in the running were Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Portland and Nashville. Personally we're all about a Detroit badge, but it seems we'll be waiting a little longer.
