Surprisingly Yummy Airline Meals: American's Airlines Unique Take on French Toast

January 6, 2015 at 11:01 AM | by | ()

We have all had a terrible meal on a flight before. In fact, we have shown you some of the sadder trays slid in front of us. With this new series of amazing airline meals, we can revel in the airline culinary delights and give kudos to the airlines that got it right.

Domestically, we were on an American Airlines in first class out of Chicago O'Hare to Fort Lauderdale and scored an awesome egg-less alternative to breakfast-- French toast strata with warmed peach compote. (Unless you're lucky enough to fly on Singapore Airlines in the premium seats, always steer clear of egg dishes.)

Cartagena, Colombia Heats Up with Yet Another New Route from JetBlue

November 24, 2014 at 3:53 PM | by | ()

Cartagena's so hot right now. New flight routes and a fresh focus on safer tourism in Colombia means more international visitors are arriving to this city of colonial charm and coastal allure. This week we're exploring how to reach and enjoy this city, nicknamed "Door of the Americas."

Winter weather may be a headache for airlines and travelers both, but the change of seasons brings with it one big plus: seasonal routes to sunny destinations!

On October 29 JetBlue stuck another line on their route map with an inaugural flight from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport down to Cartagena Rafael Núñez International Airport in Colombia. That was a busy day for Fort Lauderdale; it launched in tandem with a Las Vegas route out of FLL.

Book Flights to Brazil for Under $200, but Beware the Fine Print

Where: Brazil
November 10, 2014 at 4:36 PM | by | ()

Brazil is about to get a little early Christmas present. The country's third largest airline, Azul, started by JetBlue founder David Neeleman, has announced it will begin flying between the United States (Fort Lauderdale and Orlando) and Brazil as early as next month.

Our friends at The Flight Deal have discovered an unbeatable Azul deal for December, from Fort Lauderdale to Brazil, for $193 one-way in Economy or $510 one-way, in Business Class (reclining, not lie-flat), taxes included.

We're been a bit hesitant to promote the deal, since it's definitely going to be a headache for travelers who aren't completely confident in their ability to "hack" budget flights. In order to take full advantage of the Azul flight deals, you'll need to book through their Portuguese site, hunt-and-peck for valid dates, use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, already have or obtain a Brazil visa ($160+ pp), be okay with arriving to an "alternative" airport, and be prepared to either pay much more for the return flight, or book a one-way home on another airline using frequent flyer miles.

Scared? Don't be. Just keep in mind that this is the infancy of budget flights between the US and Brazil, so the situation will only improve.

What to know to grab this deal:

Beyond the Beach: Fort Lauderdale for LGBT Travelers

October 22, 2014 at 3:53 PM | by | ()

You guys, the temps are starting to drop as fast as crimson and golden leaves from trees, so it's high time to daydream about sand beaches, sunny skies, and fruity cocktails. We already talked about how hot the city of Fort Lauderdale is for the average sun seeker, but more and more it's overtaking Miami as an LGBT destination.

The city was recently named the "The Destination of the Year" by ManAboutWorld, as the top city for gay, lesbian and transgender visitors. Broward, the county that Fort Lauderdale calls home, is one of the most progressive in the U.S., from electing openly gay officials to passing same-sex domestic partnership benefits and barring discrimination based on sexual orientation and identity.

Fun fact: Fort Lauderdale was first US city to have a dedicated travel page for LGBT tourists, even integrating gay-friendly images to their mainstream tourism campaigns.

You Won't Believe Where Southwest is Building an International Hub

December 13, 2013 at 9:43 AM | by | ()

We’ve known for quite some time that Southwest Airlines has visions of international destinations dancing in their head, and now it looks as if that they might have picked out exactly where they want to start things up. The lucky recipients of this kind of attention are the residents of the Sunshine State, as Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is scoring quite an airport upgrade.

All in all Southwest is spending more than $300 million on terminal and concourse improvements, as they try to get things ready to go for an influx of international departures and arrivals. Things should kick off at some point next year, and the construction equipment will head offset when 2017 rolls around.

The Food Network Takes TV to the Airport with Its First Restaurant

November 13, 2012 at 10:02 AM | by | ()

It might not be your favorite television channel, but we all have a special place in our hearts for the Food Networkhy. Turn it on, tune in, and just like that you’ve wasted at least an hour of your life. Well officials with the channel’s marketing team must be hoping that the same thing will happen at that airport—at least more deliciously—as their expanding the network’s reach right into the airport.

The very first Food Network Kitchen is now doing its thing at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for all your pre-flight dining needs. The place calls Concourse F within Terminal 3 home, and Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services hopes that their partnership with the Food Network brings instant brand recognition to their latest restaurant.

Fort Lauderdale Airport Is The New Bunker Hill

November 20, 2009 at 5:09 PM | by | ()

When the Colonials learned that British forces were planning to send troops out of the city to the surrounding unoccupied hills, they acted. The colonials set up shop at the top of Bunker & Breed's Hill and picked off the redcoats sending them retreating towards Cambridge. Seems to us that FLL is the new Bunker Hill, though we will leave it to you to determine which airline wears what uniform.

By now we all know how Virgin America launched their 10th destination earlier this week at FLL and we have the photo gallery to prove it. However, what really struck us about our jaunt to meet them in FLL was the obvious jockeying for position that was going on there between JetBlue and Virgin America.

The feud deepens, after the jump.

Jetblue Will Also Fly Direct From SFO To Fort Lauderdale

August 11, 2009 at 4:12 PM | by | ()

Talk about stealing someone's thunder! This morning, Virgin America announced their plans for twice-daily roundtrips from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale, beginning in September. By this afternoon, JetBlue had countered with their own suspiciously similar news; they'll be flying one daily roundtrip from SFO to FLL also beginning in November.

We can just imagine Jetblue reading the VA news and exclaiming "oh no you didnt!" Jetblue's flights will begin one day ahead of Virgin's, on the 17th of November versus VA's 18th. Tickets are not yet available for Jetblue's FLL flights. Despite Jetblue's jumping on their route and even a day earlier, Virgin America will have more flights, the whole LAX route as well, and not to mention their precious, precious in-flight WiFi.

Perhaps they'll even race each other in the air?

Virgin America To Service Fort Lauderdale in November

August 11, 2009 at 7:28 AM | by | ()

Who's ready for spring break?!?!!? Okay okay calm down, because you've still got another eight or so months before you can decamp with your whole camp down to Florida's beaches for barely legal fun. But for you snow birds and West Coasters looking to trade the clubs of LA for the clubs of Miami, the partying will start in November as Virgin America has today announced that they'll be flying nonstop from San Francisco and Los Angeles to sunny Fort Lauderdale.

Jaunted thought this would be a VA destination long ago, though we were leaning MIA over FLL.

Tickets went on sale today for flights beginning November 18, and with two direct roundtrips daily from each city, including the only directs between FLL and SFO, we expect them to go like hotcakes. True to their LCC nature—who thinks of them a low-cost carrier anymore, with their WiFi and great service?—the tickets will start out rather cheap. We're talking prices from $99 each way for economy and $499 and up for higher classes (those with the white leather massage chairs).

Zoom Airlines Coming to Florida, California

December 19, 2007 at 11:00 AM | by | ()

Zoom Airlines, which already flies between London and JFK, is expanding its low-cost transatlantic flights to the United States. Service between London Gatwick and Fort Lauderdale begins May 22, 2008, and flights between San Diego and Gatwick start June 20.

While Zoom offers super-low one-way fares like many of the UK's LCCs, the company also has the nasty habit of tacking on vague surcharges. A round trip between Fort Lauderdale and Gatwick, for example, is listed at $398, until "departure taxes, fees and fuel surcharges" bring the price up to $750. Still a good deal, to be sure, but a little transparency in the booking process wouldn't hurt.

The Fort Lauderdale flights are also interesting in that some of them stop over in Bermuda, making the Atlantic island easier to reach for flyers leaving London. We're not sure about traffic the other way, though. Are Floridians really clamoring for a chillier golf environment?

Travel Snapshot: Seen at the Fort Lauderdale Airport...This Guy

November 21, 2007 at 3:00 PM | by | ()

We had a connection last week in Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (don't ask) and as we deplaned and made our way to the baggage claim in Terminal 3, we saw this public art sculpture. It was so strikingly weird that we snapped a picture right away.

Once we got back in front of a computer, we tracked down the meaning of this thing. Titled "Vendor with a Walkman" the piece was done by late sculptor Duane Hanson in 1990. Here is the official description from the Broward County Cultural Division:

Featuring a seated thirty-something male in a red T shirt and blue pants, listening to a walkman radio/cassette during a break. The installation accessories give additional clues to the narrative of the artwork: toy airplane, various signs and announcement for the shop, janitorial supplies... Hanson again presented a slice of Americana in the most unexpected locale.

Interestingly enough, the picture on the Broward County website shows the vendor with a Miller Lite hat. Our picture has the guy wearing some other sort of trucker hat. Looks like not much has changed since the 90s here. Oh well, we guess it's less shocking than sheep in formaldehyde.
