The 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival
The Palm Springs International Film Festival has been hiding in the shadows of another famous January fest for nearly 20 years but it looks like some star wattage is helping it come into its own. Tonight the festival officially opens with a screening of "Last Chance Harvey", starring Dustin Hoffman, and ends Jan. 19 with a "best of the fest" star-studded event.
Tuesday night, the PSIFF annual gala honored Sean Penn, Dustin Hoffman, the cast of "Revolutionary Road," and director Gus Van Sant. The gala also drew A-Listers Anne Hathaway, Dakota Fanning, and Amy Adams. But be prepared, if you are going to be surrounded by celebrities, you may be tempted to live like one.

Back of the Envelope Guide: Vancouver International Film Festival

The film festivals keep on rolling in. In fact, the Vancouver International Film Festival is only about a week away: It starts September 25 and runs through October 10.
Now in its 27th year, the festival is set to show more than 300 films from more than 60 countries. Organizers were certainly overwhelmed this year, as the festival received over 150,000 admissions, making it one of the largest to take place in North America.
The VIFF seeks to stand out from the rest by screening the largest number of East Asian films outside that region. Also, it has one of the largest collections of Canadian films in the world as well as a documentary program called Nonfiction Features.

Film Festival Travel: Brief Glimpses at the São Paulo Short Film Festival
Now that a combination of big-budget blockbusters and sunstroke has sapped our attention spans, we feel violently resistant to sitting still in the dark for the last few weeks of summer. But television premiere season is just around the corner! We found our perfect bridge in the São Paulo Short Film Festival, opening Thursday and presenting eight days of Latin American short works.
The fest, held at the Associação Cultural Kinoforum which screens Brazilian and other directors' works year-round, will pack in hundreds of movies which compete for audience awards and a jury prize. They aren't just home movies either: Six out of the 10 movies nominated for Oscars for best fictional and animation shorts last year were screened at Kinoforum first.
Between programs, mix and mingle with your fellow film fans at daily Cinemateca happy hours. And if your attention span has improved enough, see one of three classic documentaries about Brazil at the Cachaça Cinema Club.

Kick-Push Travel: Afro-Punk Takes Over Brooklyn
New York City has a festival for just about everything, so it's no surprise that Brooklyn is currently hosting one dedicated to Afro-punk culture. But you might be surprised that the week-long event is expected to bring in more than 30,000 people.
The majority of the Afro-Punk Festival, which features 40 bands, 15 film screening and an art exhibit, is taking place this week at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. There's also a pop-up skate park in the parking lot across the street, with demonstrations from pro skaters and BMX riders, as well as live bands and DJs throughout the week.
You'll also find a film screening in Fort Greene Park Saturday night, and a party in Williamsburg on Friday. The best part, of course, is that all the events are free.

Air-Conditioned Travel: Chicago's Gen Art Film Fest
As sunburns mount and the mercury rises, the allure of the local multiplex grows. But, seriously, you aren't going to see "The Love Guru" are you?
Support indie filmmakers at the Second Annual Gen Art Film Festival in Chicago this weekend and you can do penance for both "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "Sex and the City."
A $20 ticket gets you in to one of the new films and that night's after-party. We're liking fest opener "Bart Got a Room," a teenage nerd fable co-starring Alia Shawkat ("Arrested Development") along with William H. Macy. Ensemble drama "Explicit Ills" on June 27 looks good, too.
