London's Most Popular Summer Film Event Goes Underground for Winter with 'Lost in Translation'

Where: Chalk Farm Road, United Kingdom, NW1 8EH
December 1, 2011 at 1:52 PM | by | Comments (0)

London-based film buffs most likely heard about—and frequented—this summer's Rooftop Film Club screenings, hosted at popular East End hangout Queen of Hoxton. Most shows sold out long in advance, with tickets to Wayne's World, Clueless, and Top Gun, disappearing almost immediately after being released online.

Sadly, a few of these screenings were rained out owing to the city's crappy fussy weather, much to the chagrin of many a Hoxton hipster. Just in time for the blistering cold holiday season, however, the Film Club has gone underground—literally. Migrating to Camden, the newly dubbed Underground Film Club at the historic Roundhouse

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Film Independent, which produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, announced last week that they were launching the Film Independent at LACMA Film Series. This series will mix classic and contemporary films, conversations with artists, and special guest-curated programs.

The film screenings kick off tomorrow night with Jackie Brown, but the event everyone is talking about is Thursday night's live reading of The Breakfast Club, directed by Jason Reitman. A carefully selected cast, including James Van Der Beek, Mindy Kaling and Patton Oswalt will read the movie's entire script—on the fly—in front of a live audience.

London's Silent Cinema: Film, Sans Cell Phone and Chatty Audiences

July 12, 2011 at 2:25 PM | by | Comment (1)

The site of the next Silent Cinema happening

One of the most popular, perplexing entertainment trends to catch on in Europe—particularly the U.K.—in recent years is the Silent Disco, whereby partygoers don wireless headphones and dance to different DJed channels. To an observer sans headphones, the sight of clubbers shimmying en masse without an obvious music source is unnerving—ridiculous, even.

The Cannes Film Fest Was More Like the Festival du Sean Penn

Where: Cannes, France
May 23, 2011 at 2:07 PM | by | Comments (0)

It looks like this year's Cannes Film Festival turned out to be Festival de Sean Penn. Not only did Penn have two winning films in the fest, he was also honored at the first Cinema For Peace inaugural dinner for his charity work in Haiti.

On Saturday, This Must Be The Place, in which Sean plays an aging rock star, won the festival's prestigious Ecumenical Jury Prize. And on Sunday, the Cannes Film Festival awarded its highest prize, the Palme d'Or, to The Tree of Life, a film by Terrence Malick which also stars Penn, along with Brad Pitt. Though the movie won top honors at the fest, there's some questions about how regular Joes (a.k.a. the rest of us) will embrace the movie, especially since it features dinosaurs, little dialog, and Sean Penn as Brad Pitt's adult son.

Where to Watch Films Alfresco in London This Summer

May 19, 2011 at 3:33 PM | by | Comments (0)

Londoners are notoriously weather obsessed, wont to conjecture if the clouds will break to reveal a sliver of sunshine, the tiniest hint of pleasant warmth in contrast to its typical cold. It's a fallacy that the city is always bathed in grey, however. We recently had a long-time resident tell us, "summer in London makes all those months of chilly hell totally worth it." That said, if you happen to visit from May through September, we highly suggest seizing the opportunity to do anything alfresco.

Outdoor film screenings are an ideal way to enjoy the temperature rise, which can range from ever-so-slight to overwhelmingly muggy. After the jump, we've rounded up some of the best ways to catch a flick with the sunset as the backdrop.

L'Affable: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's Hard-Partying Cannes Restaurant

Where: 5 Rue de Fontaine, Cannes, France
May 17, 2011 at 2:47 PM | by | Comments (0)

We knew Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were going to have a good night in Cannes, but we didn't think it would be this good! After premiering Brad's new movie, the highly anticipated Tree of Life, at the Palais des Festivals, the couple joined a few of their celeb friends, including Naomi Campbell, at the L'Affable restaurant to celebrate.

L'Affable is a pretty affordable place when it's not Film Festival season. A prix fixe dinner menu runs 39 Euros, whereas lunch of a few courses is only 25 Euros.

Though Brad and Ange looked flawless when they arrived at the place, by the time they emerged a few hours later, he had an ear-to-ear grin and she looked completely disheveled, with messy hair, smeared make-up and glassy eyes. We're not sure what happened inside the party, but based on the looks of Brangelina, we're guessing a lot of alcohol was involved!
