February 7, 2012 at 3:27 PM | by | Comments (0)

New York's semiannual Fashion Week has begun! Full daily schedules of runway shows will last through this weekend and well into next week, while the city enjoys the big spending of foreign fashion editors and industry heavyweights. But we can't forget about the models! With over a hundred shows happening, you can bet that a sea of beauty has just washed into NYC. Here are The Five Best Places for Model-Watching During NYC Fashion Week:

· The subway, specifically lines that touch the west side of Manhattan:
The trains to travel on, if you want to sit across from models clutching their iPad portfolios or show schedules, are the E, C and 1 trains. These travel closest to Lincoln Center, the fashion offices of the garment district, the west side galleries where parties and shows take place, the better hotels in Soho and Tribeca, and the photo studios of the far west side. The model spotting on these lines starts earliest of all, like 1.5 weeks before fashion week, as models swarm the city on appointments and fittings before the big event.

Air Chanel: Karl Lagerfeld Constructs 'Jet' Set for the Haute Couture Runway

Where: Paris, France
January 24, 2012 at 9:44 AM | by | Comments (0)

Less than 12 hours ago in Paris, the semiannual Chanel Haute Couture runway show took place, helmed as usual by designer Karl Lagerfeld. As photos of the looks trickle onto the web, we see that we're not the only ones watching Pan Am; Karl's collection turned out look after look inspired by flight, the glamorous 1960s, and the old way of getting dressed for travel.

But wait; there's more. Not only were the fashions jet-appropriate, but the entire show went down inside a set like the fuselage of a commercial airliner. Guests sat 3-4 abreast on either side of a central aisle, and were greeted by a trolley serving juices and champagne. The fauxplane inside Paris' Grand Palais, dubbed Air Chanel, took builders five days to construct.

Says the Telegraph UK of the end result:

As Fashion Week winds down in New York, London's Somerset House is gearing up to welcome waifish bloggers, international journalists, and dedicated style aficionados to the recently erected tents in its courtyard, where shows will be staged.

In recent years, Topshop, the U.K.'s homegrown answer to H&M, has made quite a name for itself among fashion industry experts, from edtrixes who proudly cop to pairing their mass produced separates with designer threads to teenaged shoppers trying to achieve the Alexa Chung look on a dime pence. Starting tomorrow, one of Topshop's central London outposts is where a majority of #LFW action will go down for the public.

Dolce & Gabbana Take Over Milan's City Hall for 20th Anniversary Menswear Exhibit

Where: Piazza della Scala, Milan, Italy
June 22, 2010 at 3:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

Hot men and haute menswear is dominating Milan this week as Men's Fashion Week wraps up, but although the runway and cocktail hours are private, invite-only events, they are often held in the best, most normally tourist-friendly areas. This way, even if you aren't among the select fashionistas to walk the red carpet, you'll still be able to visit and enjoy the scenery on any other normal day.

Case in point: Dolce & Gabbana, the Italian designer label by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, recently celebrated the 20th Anniversary of their Menswear Collection, and they did so in grand style with a giant fashion show and after-party at Palazzo Marino, Milan's City Hall, which spilled out into Piazza della Scala.

Fashion Week in Berlin Brings Out the Best in Green Design

January 21, 2010 at 4:20 PM | by | Comments (0)

Can you feel that electricity in the air? It's fashion...or rather, it's probably the static electricity of fashionistas donning their trendiest wool ensembles for winter fashion weeks around the world.

Just yesterday began the short-but-sweet Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Berlin. They won't be driving cars down catwalks, no, as Mercedes is only a sponsor, but Berlin is a welcome start to the fashion week season as the city climbs in cool factor.

Armani Says Rome No Longer a Fashion Capital

Where: Rome, Italy
February 4, 2009 at 12:16 PM | by | Comments (0)

You know, we never quite understood the popularity of shopping trips to Rome; the luxury stores are the same you can find in any big city, and any other interesting store in the center has fallen to the tourist trade or believes their great location justifies inflated pricing. For once, Giorgio Armani agrees with us; he's saddened by and kind of angry at the state of Rome's fashion scene.

According to New York Magazine's fashion blog, The Cut, good old Georgie-boy said that Rome "has killed high fashion by showcasing people who didn't merit it." This is in reference to Rome's very own miniscule Fashion Week, which ended yesterday and which we didn't know existed. In fact, Armani's anger at Rome is probably the best thing that has ever happened for the event, as it succeeded in convincing the coordinator to remove the amateurs as well as getting some press for the poor thing.

If you are, in fact, hoping to jet off to The Eternal City soon for some retail therapy, we suggest skipping the stalwarts on Via Condotti in favor of the alleys of the Trastevere neighborhood, where you can find true local style in family-owned shops sandwiched between osterias smelling of gnocchi alla romana. Until Rome's Fashion Week shapes up per Armani's suggestion, we'll happily stick to our clothes scented with spaghetti.

Kanye West Shows Off At Paris Fashion Week

Where: Paris, France
January 27, 2009 at 8:48 AM | by | Comment (1)

It's been years that Kanye West has been threatening to unleash his talents on the world of fashion. He finally made good this week when kicks he designed for Louis Vuitton hit the runway at Paris Fashion Week.

While on his blog, Mr. West seemed more concerned with dispelling rumors that he wants to do porn, the Louis Vuitton Don was all smiles with Marc Jacobs, who designed the collection featuring West's bright high-tops and loafer-style sneakers. Nor is he stopping there: West also designed a collection for Nike called Air Yeezy, expected to hit stores this spring.

The KWLV's won't be available till June, but if you've got the connections, you still have one more day to catch Paris Fashion Week: Today's remaining shows include Christian Lacroix (3:30 local time at the Centre Georges Pompidou) and Givenchy (7PM at 15 rue de l'Ecole de Médecine). Tomorrow, Fashion Week closes out with Elie Saab (12:30PM, 13 avenue du Président Wilson) and Jean Paul Gaultier (2:30PM, 325 rue Saint-Martin).

Fashionable Travel: Gaultier's Paris

Where: Paris, France
October 2, 2008 at 12:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

This week in Paris, women bearing little resemblance to, uh, women have been strapping on their heels and climbing onto long elevated platforms as top designers unveil their spring 2009 collections at Paris Fashion Week.

Earlier this week, an amalgam of actresses and singers took front from at Christian Dior's Ready to Wear show. The group included one-hit wonders Lily Allen and Katy Perry and Marilyn Manson's ex.

The International Herald Tribune's Henry Alford used his time in Paris a bit more wisely, skipping out on some of the shows to let Jean-Paul Gaultier guide him through his favorite Parisian haunts. Check out a summarized version of what the guy who invented Madonna's cone bra considers Paris' crème de la crème:
