All Singapore Wants for Christmas is a Hello Kitty Airplane

August 19, 2014 at 12:33 PM | by | Comment (1)

If we’ve learned one thing about the world in the last few years, it is that Hello Kitty is only gaining in ubiquity. From airport shops and her own Los Angeles convention to kitty-print toilet paper and every accessory under the sun, the cartoon cat missing a mouth has steamrolled beyond Barbie, the X-Men, and more in her quest for world domination.

Since 2005, that success has included airplanes, with Taiwanese carrier EVA Airways debuting Airbus A330s (and, last year, an extra special Boeing 777-300ER) covered tip to tail in Hello Kitty imagery. When we say tip to tail, we mean even the interior; the Hello Kitty flights, of which there are 6 regular routes originating in Taipei (Los Angeles, Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Fukuoka, Hokkaido), please passengers with Hello Kitty-theme in-flight shopping, in-flight entertainment, and in-flight meals.

There's New Routes This Week from EVA Air, United, and Frontier

January 10, 2014 at 7:57 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· United:
It’s cold—we get it—and that means it’s time to book a little bit of a winter escape, and one of the easier options just has to be a trip to Florida. United is ready to take you there, as they just started up new nonstop flights between Denver and Fort Myers. Initially things were limited to just a few flights per week, but as of the other day these flights are now a daily option until around the beginning of April. There’s room for about 150 of your closest friends and family aboard the Boeing 737s that are set to serve these new routes. So grab a ticket, a seat, and enjoy your time in the Sunshine State.

· Qatar Airways:
Those carriers from the Middle East are always busy heading to new and exciting destinations across the globe, and this week is no exception as Qatar Airways is once again headed into the skies. We’ve heard that this is destination number 121 for the carrier, as its planes are now connecting Doha with Hangzhou over in China. Airbus A330s are doing all of the flying between the two countries, and as of now these flights are an option four times each and every week. With connections out of Doha to pretty much anywhere across the globe this just might be a great option for that around-the-world itinerary you keep dreaming about.

Cheers! These 13 Airlines Aren't Afraid to Pour the Good Champagne

January 2, 2014 at 1:36 PM | by | Comments (3)

Just because the confetti is cleaned up, Auld Lang Syne is retired in your iTunes playlist, and your outfit from New Year's Eve is at the dry-cleaners doesn't mean we still can't talk about one of the best parts of ringing in a new year: a champagne toast! Since 'popping bottles' is for such special occasions, we can't think of a better way to sip some bubbles than when on a plane heading for a new destination.

While some airlines have a knack for feeding passengers fine food like lobster and caviar, there are thankfully more still taking sparkling wines just as serious. If your 2014 travel plans include flights in First or Business Class on the following carriers, be sure to reach for that PDB (pre-departure beverage) and ask for a flute of these fine pours:

September 25, 2013 at 11:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

You probably know by now that Los Angeles International Airport has lifted the veil off its billion-dollar makeover of the Tom Bradley International Terminal. While that means improved facilities for all travelers, premium passengers on Star Alliance flights will also benefit from a gigantic new lounge complex, opening today—Wednesday, September 25.

We attended the ribbon cutting by Star Alliance CEO Mark Schwab earlier this week to give you all the details on the 18,000-square-foot spread. Come in for the shower suites and the wine wall, stay for the outdoor terrace with fire pits and tarmac views.

MEGA Photo Gallery: 77 Pics of EVA Air's Hello Kitty 777 Party

September 19, 2013 at 5:27 PM | by | Comments (0)

"This Hello Kitty jet is for everyone. On it, every day is a happy day. We are spreading a message of happiness." - EVA Air's Chairman (and Captain) K.W. Chang

In 2005, EVA Air painted Hello Kitty on the side of a plane. Then they did it again in 2006. The two planes turned frowns upside-down for a few years, but went away in 2008. Then, in 2011, we showed you the return of the Hello Kitty planes, though these newest versions only flitted around Asia at the time. Now, the US finally gets in on the kawaii action as the airline debuts their first Hello Kitty Boeing 777 and a first trans-Pacific route for the cute Sanrio character: Taipei to Los Angeles.

"Other airlines only do the exterior job [of theming a plane], but we've done it all," says Chang. "We want everyone to share our world," before connecting to other Star Alliance flights and returning to their world. You've already read the 11 coolest facts about these airplanes, but see exactly what Chang is talking about in our 77 original photos of outside, inside, and all around the new 777:

11 Incredible Facts About EVA Air's New 'Hello Kitty' Airplane

September 19, 2013 at 12:21 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's not every day you see dancing on the tarmac at Los Angeles International Airport, but when that dancing is to celebrate the arrival of a Hello Kitty-themed airplane, it's completely warranted.

Slipping into a gate alongside the tails of 787s, 747-8s and A380s yesterday was EVA Air's brand new Boeing 777-300ER, its body painted all over with the cheery cartoons of Sanrio's Hello Kitty and friends.

Over 70 Hello Kitty enthusiasts were on the inaugural flight, joined by a troupe of Hello Kitty dancers, characters, artists and Hello Kitty's creator herself, Yuko Yamaguchi. The arrival marks the beginning of regular, nonstop flights between LAX and Taipei-Taoyuan for this aircraft, which is arguably the most kawaii addition to aviation since Pokémon showed up on some 747s. Even as Alaska Airlines' Mickey Mouse plane passed by, all eyes remained on EVA's Kitty.

Before booking a flight, however, there's some things you should know about EVA Air's Hello Kitty 777:

What's Up with Star Alliance in 2013

March 14, 2013 at 9:58 AM | by | Comments (0)

As we mentioned yesterday, there has been quite a shake-up in the world of aviation lately, all of which is leaving some airline alliances bidding fond adieu to some airlines while welcoming others with open arms. Let's take a look at what 2013 has in store for Star Alliance, and what effects it might have on your own travel.

The world's first and largest airline alliance is set to lose at least two airlines this year with US Airways and TAM leaving after the mergers discussed yesterday, both of which see them switching to Oneworld. This leaves smaller carriers like Avianca, TACA and Copa Airlines to pick up the slack in South America.

Where: Taiwan
May 22, 2012 at 10:14 AM | by | Comments (0)

New and improved business class seats seems to be a thing this year among airlines, and Taiwan-based EVA Air is next up, revamping their premium cabin and announcing that it'll be coming to US shores first—to New York, specifically.

As a complete service overhaul, EVA re-named business to Royal Laurel Class and will now offer a fully lie-flat seat to stretch your legs on the 16+ hour non-stop from JFK to Taipei. New modern seats, upgraded menus and increased entertainment and comfort are all part of the spruce-up.

Even More Photos of EVA Air's Three New 'Hello Kitty' Airplanes

November 2, 2011 at 8:52 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last week, in a frenzy of excitement, we broke the news (for English-language press, at least) that Taiwan's EVA Air would celebrate their 20th Anniversary by bringing back the old, immensely successful Hello Kitty-painted airplane. Instead of only one as before, however, there'd be three A330s, each with a unique paintjob and the full treatment of Hello Kitty-ization on the inside and out.

That alone was awesome news, and now we have more. Although the Hello Kitty plane routes only operate from Taipei-Taoyuan International to Tokyo, Fukuoka, Hokkaido, Seoul and Hong Kong, EVA Air has just begun long-haul flights from New York-JFK to Taipei. Switching operations from Newark to JFK means it's now that much easier for American travelers to hop an EVA flight and connect at TPE to one of the Hello Kitty jets.
