Sugar High, Up High: Five Exceptional Airport Candy Shops
If you’re flying next week, beware the red and pink cheap chocolates of the Hudson News airport outlets. While sending something in advance of Valentine’s Day is probably the best idea, you can always grab something nice for him or her on your way home from the airport, and no we're not talking about flowers from an arrivals hall vending machine. Here’s five airport candy shops that should satisfy any sweetie’s sweet tooth:
Sugar Pop - Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport
Even if you don’t need something for the upcoming Hallmark holiday, it’s worth it to stop in at Sugar Pop within the mall section of Terminal 1-Lindbergh. The place is loaded with different colors and sugary options, and they even have some teddy bears and other cuddly critters to go along with all those calories. This isn’t exactly the place for gourmet confections, but if you’re looking for oversized lollipops or personalized treats, it'll more than do.
Candy Empire – Singapore-Changi Airport
Sitting within the basement level of Terminal 3 is the spot you need to visit for chocolates, cookies, and everything in between. They promise stuff from Australia, Europe, and the United States, so if you can’t find something that fits your needs, you don’t know what you need. A few pieces of foreign candy from Candy Empire should hopefully smooth over any sort of trouble caused by not being home on Valentine's Day.

American Airlines Shows Off Upcoming New Seats Via Instagram
Last week we told you about the slurry of airlines using this year to refresh their aircraft cabins and service. Not a few days later, American Airlines dropped some major news as well, and they supplemented it with Instagram shots of the goods.
AA will take delivery of their first Boeing 777-300ER late this year and, from photos posted on Instagram last week, the big birds will look pretty flash on the inside. Since the airline is the first US carrier to take delivery of the shiny, new aircraft type, the introduction will surely be huge.

Mobile Coupons Are Just One Thing DFW is Gifting Holiday Travelers
If you’re flying through Dallas-Ft. Worth anytime soon—like for the holidays—be sure to keep an eye out for some of the new tech toys that have recently debuted at the airport.
Airport officials have installed some large displays here and there—think of them as gifts—with Microsoft Tag codes slapped right onto the sides. Scan away with your mobile phone, and you’ll be rewarded with coupons and other deals to various restaurants and retailers around the airport. They’re location-based as well, so the airport knows to give you a deal at the nearby Sbarro—not the one that’s like two terminals away.

TSA Launches Faster 'PreCheck' Security Lines, But There's a Catch

TSA has been a veritable mad scientist's laboratory of experiments lately, all aimeddepending on how cynical you areeither at improving security, getting the public to stop whining about intrusive security measures, or some combination of the two (hint: it's some combination of the two).
They're going out of their way not to pat down babies, they're launching Israeli-style security screenings, they're rolling out gingerbread man scanners, and now they're launching a new program to speed frequent fliers through security. Ambitious!
The new program, dubbed PreCheck, is in its pilot phase at ATL, MIA, DFW, and DTW. Selected frequent fliers who shared their information with TSA before they arrived at the airport are being offeredin exchangea line that allows them get through screening much more quickly. It's kind of "basic trade-off," as the Associated Press writeup so eloquently puts it.

Spend Your DFW Layover at the American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum
If you’ve got some time to kill before your flight out of Dallas-Ft. Worth there’s no need to visit the airport bar—although that isn’t necessarily the worst idea. Instead keep the rental car for a few extra minutes, and take a visit to the American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum right on the outskirts of the airport complex in Fort Worth, Texas.
In a nutshell, the aviation museum shows off the history of American Airlines, and there’s plenty of interactive exhibits that keep you from dozing off during your visit. The museum’s Flightlab reveals how exactly airplanes stay up in the air, along with explaining all other kinds of stuff related to aerodynamics and flying machines. There’s even a Flight Simulator where you can test your skills in the cockpit, but just be sure to call ahead—(817) 967-5904—to ensure it’s open during your visit.

DFW Airport Now Offers Deals, Thanks to Foursquare and Your Smartphone
We already know that Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport isn’t a fan of paying taxes—well, kind of—and now they’re looking to offer even more savings to those looking to spend some coin in the terminals and concourses.
The airport is teaming up with Foursquare and Facebook Places—clearly they’re not playing favorites—to offer up all kinds of location-based deals and steals when you and your crew are killing time before your flight.

Instant Tax Refunds Arrive at DFW, But Only for Foreign Visitors
Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport is starting a program where Texas sales tax can be made optional to those visiting from overseas. Sure the tax needs to be paid up front, but afterwards they’re making it pretty easy to get a little percentage back on that Tony Romo jersey or bottle of BBQ sauce.
Apparently it’s one of the first big airports in the country to do this, and it’s all available through a little kiosk in the North Ticketing Hall inside Terminal D. TaxFree Shopping is the one running this new system, so be on the lookout for their sign if you want a little bit of money back. Sure you’ll need to show receipts for what you bought, but the refund here is instant—and via cash, PayPal or check—so there’s no waiting period or need to deal with overly confusing paperwork or mailing stuff in.

Awesome Video Alert: Hanging Out at the Airport, After Dark
Do you ever wonder what happens at airports...after hours? Well, if it's a small airport, it likely shuts down, but if you're lucky enough to be stuck at one of the major ones, like Dallas-Fort Worth, then it's a playground. Case in point: two travelers, Larry and Joe, had a layover at DFW and found their connecting flight cancelled. Instead of moping about and sleeping while uncomfortably stretched across chairs, they whipped out their cameras and got up to some old-fashioned mischief.
We won't spoil the video above for you, but let's just say that the part around 1:35-1:45 is our favorite. That takes more than just a pair of a balls; serious creative processes are at work here.
As a fan of airport spelunking, we usually find it easier to engage in hijinks in European airports. Kudos to these guys for having fun, documenting it and not inconveniencing other passengers while doing so.

Next Stop, Havana: Eight More US Airports Get Go Ahead to Fly to Cuba
Oh wow. Steps towards the re-opening of Cuba are coming quicker and quicker now, and the latest advance is a huge one: Eight new US airports have been given permission to operate charter flights to Cuba. It was only back in January that Obama and Congress re-allowed educational and religious groups to travel to Castro's island, but their departure points were limited to NYC, Miami and Los Angeles.
With the news that eight more airportsdeemed to have sufficient customs and immigration facilitiescan now begin their own travel agency-arranged flights, you can expect to see many more "My Cuba Trip" photo slideshows from your neighbors. The new airports are: Chicago-O'Hare, Baltimore, Dallas-Fort Worth, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Atlanta and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Virgin America's Groupon Deal Did So Well, They've Brought It to Dallas
About two weeks ago, Virgin America managed to do an outstanding thing. They announced that service between Chicago-O'Hare and LAX, SFO would begin in late May, but more to the point, they sold out a crazy Groupon deal in a matter of a couple hours. The bargain was pay $7 and get $77 in airfare towards a roundtrip purchase on Virgin America’s new ORD routes, and the deal was good on Groupon's Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco sites...all of whom ate it up.
Well, the deal is back. Except this time it's a bit modified, and it's for Virgin America's Dallas-Fort Worth routes. DFW is still a new destination for VX, seeing as how they only kicked their spurs into the place back in December. Here's the details behind the airfare discount they've offering today (and keep in mind it's a limited thing!):

'Dismal Failure' as TSA Agents Let Guns Slip Through, Followed By No Real Consequences

An undercover TSA agent tested the new DFW full-body scanners by putting a pistol in her undergarments and repeatedly walking through security. She got through screening without a problem "every time she tried." TSA officials jumped into action by removing literally zero of the TSA screeners involved in the massive security breakdown. All of them are still working scanners today.
So someone leaked the story to the press. A journalist writing it up got Larry Wansley, former head of security at American Airlines, to go on the record describing the affair as "a dismal failure." That really forced TSA to go into action, and this time they put out a statement telling everybody to calm down because advanced imaging technology is "an effective tool to detect both metallic and nonmetallic items hidden on passengers." Good to know!
How many times are we going to play this game? The one where TSA sets itself up for failure, then fails, then insists that everything's going according to plan? Seriously.

Five Things to Do on Your Layover at: Dallas-Fort Worth Airport
We’ve all had layovers that were a little longer than initially expected. Mechanical delays, weather emergencies, and all kinds of other issues make that tight 45-minute connection turn into something extraordinary. We can’t get promise your flight will depart on time, but we can offer some time killers at the airport.
Five picks for spending a few extra hours within the terminals of DFW Airport:
· Hit The Club:
For the extended layover it might just be worth it to plop down a few bucks to gain access to the airport’s very own club. The Club at DFW doesn’t require a pricey annual membership or elite frequent flier credentials, because as long as you’re willing to pay the entry fee you’re welcomed like a VIP.
Just $35 will get you access to the lounge, and you’ll be living the comfy life of a white collar corporate drone. Expect a lot of the usual airline lounge offerings here, including free drinks—both soft and hard—as well as snacks, newspapers, televisions, WiFi, and computers. There are even some shower facilities if you’re hanging out before or after a long-haul transatlantic flight. There’s even a separate smoking section within the lounge, which might be worth the price of admission if you’re dying for a smoke.
