Delta Adds a Few 'Trip Extras' to Their Booking Pages

March 20, 2012 at 8:26 AM | by | Comments (0)

We’re not really big fans of upselling at the airport, but it seems that the airlines won’t quit when it comes to offering up this and that for a fee. Delta has long been charging for checked baggage—just like all the other legacy carriers—but now they’re moving some of their extras right into the airline booking page. This is hardly something new for the airline industry, but Delta is quick to advertise it as a cross between a convenience and a perk.

Things like Priority Boarding are now available to be added onto your base airline fare—kind of like an order of fries—for as low as $9 per segment. Sure it’s a nice option to have, and we guess it’s best to take care of things all it once. However, we’re usually kind of fine with pushing and shoving ourselves to the front of the boarding line, and then just tossing our carry-on up and over an elderly grandma before finding our middle seat—we’re kidding of course.

Everybody in the Delta SkyClub Getting Tipsy...on Top-Shelf Booze

October 19, 2011 at 9:20 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last time we were hanging out in one of Delta’s SkyClubs, we were enjoying a little bit of premium tequila, and now it looks like more of the top shelf stuff is coming to an airport lounge near you. All the booze that has been free will remain complimentary in the clubs, but there are some new fancy drinks and upgraded spirits that will now set you back some extra cash; better find a buddy with an expense account, and quick!

The rollout of what Delta is calling the “Luxury Bar” has already begun, and the plan is to have the new booze available in New York—both JFK and LGA—as well as Boston, Newark, Palm Beach, Seattle, and Washington. They promise that the offerings are coming to other airports sooner than later, so don’t worry if you call Los Angeles or Atlanta home.

Guzzling Some Avion Tequila During Delta SkyClub's Thursday Happy Hours

August 9, 2011 at 9:38 AM | by | Comments (0)

To celebrate the arrival of Avión Tequila at Delta SkyClub airport lounges, Delta and Avión have been hosting happy hour shindigs from 5pm to 7pm on Thursdays. We just happened to be in the neighborhood last week, and we’re already looking forward to another layover filled with agave spirits.

While killing some time in Atlanta we made our way to the SkyClub in the center of Concourse A near the Chili’s—after stopping at Chick-fil-A obviously. We got there a little early and warmed up with a glass of Sweetwater Pale Ale and waited for 5pm to arrive.

Inside the Delta SkyClub at Miami International Airport

Where: Miami International Airport [map], Miami, FL, United States
August 5, 2011 at 10:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

We recently found ourselves at Delta’s SkyClub at Miami International Airport, and we have to admit we were pretty impressed—at least when comparing it to other domestic lounges. This place is clean and comfortable, but it’s got nothing on some of those swanky overseas lounges we’ve been lucky enough to visit.

Delta has been remodeling its clubs slowly but surely—like the one in LAX—but the club at MIA has it’s own unique style that sets it apart from its SkyClub siblings since it hit the scene in 2009. The architecture—think wavy ceilings—is featured in the club just like in other portions of the terminal, and the tying together of elements wasn't lost on us. Plenty of soft seating surfaces look a little more chic and cool than the usual office furniture placed inside an airline lounge, so we say thumbs up for that.

Why Delta's Celeb Chef Michelle Bernstein Loves Warm Nuts

April 27, 2011 at 11:37 AM | by | Comments (0)

Before you're even ready to take a bite of her food, Chef Michelle Bernstein will make your jaw drop. Her credentials are enough to get foodies quivering, as she's owner of several heavily awarded restaurants, a James Beard award winner, an Iron Chef winner (versus Bobby Flay), a Food Network personality with her own cookware line, and an author. Ah yes—and she's Delta's celebrity chef, formulating special courses to be enjoyed in-flight by those in BusinessElite or First Class on select flights.

We were fortunate to meet Chef Bernstein on Monday night, as Delta rewarded their most loyal flyers—the Ryan Binghams of this world—with a private dinner at New York's JBF LTD, a one-month pop-up restaurant from the James Beard Society. What did we want to know of the decorated chef? Only her official position on warm nuts—the warm nuts you're served before an in-flight meal, that is.

Where to Find Delta's Pop-Up 'Cube' Experience Around London (and Win Business Class Tickets)

Where: Terminal 5, London Heathrow Airport, London, United Kingdom
March 27, 2011 at 6:06 AM | by | Comments (0)

Wait...whoa. What's Delta doing squatting all up in British Airways' territory at London-Heathrow Terminal 5? It's not a mirage, but it is temporary. The pop-up "Delta Cube" in T5's departure hall is what's next from Delta, an interactive environment to flaunt their new lie-flat business class seats right in the faces of those flying their competitors, right that second.

Now look closer: there's a dude in there. No, he's not being held captive from BA's cabin crew; it's actually quite the opposite, even if some oneworld Alliance folk have been giving the Delta Cube's crew dirty looks. The man will spend all day, everyday through tomorrow (Monday, March 28) chilling in one of Delta's extremely new BusinessElite seats, experiencing it as if he was really winging his way from London to New York in an airplane, not in a bomb-proof Cube being gawked at by envious economy travelers.

The Cube isn't just for looking at—no. It's for winning stuff too, specifically winning two round-trip BusinessElite tickets for an international Delta flight.

How to win and where else to see the Cube...

Join Netflix, Get Frequent Flyer Miles on These Three Airlines

March 25, 2011 at 10:45 AM | by | Comments (2)

It's rare to run into someone these days who doesn't have Netflix, especially now that their Instant Streaming isn't all movies like Logan's Run and Cruel Intentions 2, but new sign-ups stand to benefit nicely from airlines who've partnered with Netflix to offer miles.

Here's three airlines with whom you'll get closer to the skies just by watching TV:

Delta SkyMiles:
Delta just got down with the Netflix-for-miles idea recently, and it's a pretty good deal. New sign-ups can earn 1,500 SkyMiles, no matter which plan you pick. Just be sure to have your SkyMiles number ready, and a list of what you'd like to add to your queue first. You can sign up for the Delta promotion HERE.

Delta is Totally Cool With You Checking In on Facebook for Your Flight

March 22, 2011 at 9:31 AM | by | Comment (1)

We’re thinking that someone in Delta’s social media department is certainly looking for a promotion, or at least a fat raise when the 2011 review period rolls around. Last year Delta was the first airline to sell tickets through its Facebook page, and earlier this month they just started up offering all kinds of traveler assistance both through Facebook and Twitter.

Well now they’re practically bringing their whole website right into Facebook, as you can now do pretty much everything while checking in on your friends and family—you know, like your grandma that joined last week. Delta’s Ticket Counter allows you to check-in for your flights right there in Facebook, and apparently they’re like the first airline to do something like this.

Tweet of the Week: Unlimited Delta SkyMiles for Everybody!

February 15, 2011 at 4:38 PM | by | Comments (0)

We love Tuesdays. Why, you ask? Because the day brings many travel tips and quips as "Travel Tuesday" on Twitter, and we're going to share our favorite with you. Got an avid travel twitterer we should follow? Let us know.

More and more lately, we've actually enjoyed the tweets of airline accounts. There's a voice, and typically tons of useful news like deep fare sales or bits like what @Delta dropped today. They're ending the expiration of frequent flyer miles in their SkyMiles program, which means you can just keep flying, and amassing miles, and letting your account grow and grow until you reach the number of miles needed for that reward you've had your heart set on forever. For us, that's a round-the-world, multiple-stopover ticket...but you know that'll take a while.

Inside Delta's Revamped and Remodeled SkyClub at LAX

January 28, 2011 at 9:51 AM | by | Comments (0)

Delta has recently been opening up their wallet for all kinds of projects with the hopes of improving things for passengers both on the ground and up in the air. We’ve seen a few advancements in their SkyClub offerings—although still nothing compared to those swanky overseas lounges—but it’s still a welcome escape from the madness of the main concourse.

The SkyClub at LAX was under construction for much of 2010, but the ribbon was finally cut to welcome those willing to pay for the privilege during the second half of the year. We recently got the chance to swing by during a layover, so we thought we’d take a look around for ourselves.

Inside the Delta SkyClub at Tokyo-Narita Airport

Where: Tokyo-Narita International Airport, Tokyo, Japan
January 6, 2011 at 9:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

15-ish hours. That's how long a flight it is on Delta direct from Tokyo-Narita International to New York-JFK, and trust us when we say that you'll feel every one of those hours passing by in the air. So it's all the more important to make the most of your time on the ground before take-off, by eating, finishing up your work, or just plain chillin'. All that is exactly what we recently did at the Delta SkyClub, taking advantage of a Groupon deal where we paid $25 instead of $50 for the Day Pass.

What'd we get for that $25? Well, a glass of green tea and a few finger sandwiches, and the feeling that comes with being part of those who are admitted to the Business Class lounge. And what a feeling that is. Sadly, since the Narita Express train took its damned time getting us to the airport, that feeling lasted a brief 30 minutes until we had to board the plane.

In the meantime, however, here's what we loved and hated about the Delta SkyClub at Tokyo-Narita:

Eat Cookies, Earn Delta SkyMiles

January 4, 2011 at 3:48 PM | by | Comments (0)

What, if you had to guess, if one of the things we look forward to when flying on Delta? Their direct flights from JFK to places like Berlin and Tokyo? You're getting warm. Their SkyClubs? Colder. Earning SkyMiles, maybe? Ooh ooh you're getting hot! Eating the free Biscoff cookies both onboard and in the SkyClubs? BINGO. Those cookies have harnessed some sort of voodoo magic to taste so good, and our friend, who happens to know our intense obsession with them, forwarded along a way to eat them and gain SkyMiles without having to fly anywhere.

Apparently Delta's partnership with Biscoff goes pretty deep, so deep that if you order anything from the Biscoff site and input your Delta SkyMiles number, you'll earn 250 Bonus Miles with every purchase (plus 1 Mile for every $1). Or, just go for the cookie gold and spend $75 and to reap 500 Bonus Miles, plus the 1 Mile for each $1.
