Pay to Play Global Scavenger Hunt's 'Amazing Race'-Like Contest

October 28, 2009 at 2:54 PM | by | Comments (0)

Update: We apologize for calling Global Scavenger Hunt a TAR clone. It actually debuted in 2000, one full year before Amazing Race.

The Amazing Race has spawned yet another clone. The Global Scavenger Hunt, similar to companies like Competitours, sends wannabe TAR contestants in a race all over the world. Thing is, instead of a million-dollar prize, you'll have to settle for a "World's Greatest Travelers" trophy and free race entry next year to defend your title. You'll also have to pay to play; the race costs $9,900. It's a lot of dough to play your favorite TV game, but it does include all international airfare, hotels, about 40 percent of meals and special event gear.

All the details and the little bit of charity, after the jump.

So How Did It Go? The Winner Of The Jaunted-Competitours Challenge Speaks

August 10, 2009 at 1:55 PM | by | Comment (1)

Back in June, we announced the winner of our Jaunted-Competitours Travel Giveaway, where a team of intrepid travelers who the change to participate in the July 28 European Competitours departure.

The lucky reader was Daniel Anderson, who won the contest by suggesting the creative challenge of having locals teach racers the national anthem in the country's language and then making them perform it. He chose to take his mom with him to Europe, and although they didn't win the big prize of Starwood nights and airline tickets, they did come in fourth with memories and stories to last a lifetime.

Some of Daniel's reports from the Competitours road:

So, Who Won The Competitours Contest?

June 30, 2009 at 11:07 AM | by | Comments (0)

The Competitours Contest ended last week and we had a ball looking through all of your suggestions. There were so many good ones to choose from and we highly suspect that producers of the next season of Amazing Race might be cribbing from some of the challenges you all submitted.

But alas, we can only choose one winner. Our panel of judges has ruled that Daniel Andersen with his National Anthem Challenge had the best Competitours challenge idea. Here's what he submitted:

The objectives of the challenge would be for the team to find a local who was willing to teach them that particular countries national anthem in that countries language. Once they've got a grasp on it, along with their local, they must find a flag from that country and perform underneath it for the people passing by. This could be done in any country and would be hilarious.

Daniel and a travel partner will now be on their way to Europe on July 28 to compete in the next Competitours adventure throughout Western and Central Europe where he compete against Amazing Race Season 9 Winner Tyler MacNiven and his Mom. The grand prize? Up to 40 Starwood Hotel Nights, airfare for up to four people and up to $6500 spending money.

The itinerary is still a secret at this moment, but Daniel and other Competitours teams will be exploring major European cities as they accomplish a series of fun, quirky and surprise challenges. Good luck Daniel and make sure to keep us updated on the trip!

Tyler MacNiven and His Mom Will Be Waiting For You at the Competitours Finish Line

June 8, 2009 at 4:22 PM | by | Comments (0)

This week, we were lucky enough to catch up with Tyler MacNiven, one half of the Amazing Race 9 winning "hippie" duo. He'll be competing with his mom on the upcoming Competitours experience this summer. If you want a shot at dethroning this AR champ, here's your chance - but you are going to have to bring it!

He's still very much the same guy we came to know and love on the Race: smart, affable and quirky. Since winning his season of Amazing Race with teammate B.J. Averell, he's pursued filmmaking and continued to travel the world, including visits to Iran, Mongolia and Paris, just to name a few. In Iran, he attempted to run the entire 1,000 mile length of the country, but was busted and kicked-out after only 100 miles. You can check out his take on the experience here.

Wannabe Amazing Racers Listen Up: Competitours Explained

May 27, 2009 at 6:18 PM | by | Comments (10)

Do you know someone that's tried out for Amazing Race and didn't make it? Of course you do. The show has a rabid following of fans that say, "We can do that!" Only actually getting on the show is near impossible.

We personally know three "teams" of people who've tried out, creating quirky audition videos to showcase their love of travel, sense of adventure, willingness to accept tough challenges and in some cases, a totally dysfunctional relationship.

But they never made it on the show, despite repeated submissions.

Fortunately for them, there's Competitours, a travel outfit that sends folks on adventures throughout European cities. Much like Amazing Race, Competitours are asked to complete different challenges and activities each day, depending on the city they are in. But unlike the travel tours your grandparents favor, there's no walking tours involved, no one's sitting through a boring bus tour and there's no rigid 8am to 8pm itinerary of things to do.

"This is for people who like sight-doing and not sight-seeing," said Steve Belkin, founder and president of Competitours.

And for those who love the competitive edge of Amazing Race, the Competitours trips allow teams to compete against one another for a grand prize that includes at least 25 nights in a Starwood hotel, airfare, and up to $3,500 in spending money.
