Neighborhoods You Need To Know And Go: Chicago's Lincoln Square

October 29, 2009 at 12:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

When tourists come to Chicago, oftentimes they don't venture beyond downtown. Because this common, but easily remediable mistake, they miss out on of Chicago's best assets: its diverse neighborhoods. Lincoln Square is one such 'hood.

Once the city's German enclave, the North Side nabe now is known for the hip shops and cool cafes, restaurants and bars that line Lincoln Avenue. Plus, it's the best place to hear folk music in the city and belly up to the bar for a foamy brew. Be sure to let us know in the comments if you love Lincoln Square as much as us, and if you have any favorite spots we should know about. But for now, let's get to the meat of it with our top picks for what to do now in Lincoln Square:

Jaunted's Gems Of Al Fresco Dining In Chicago's Old Town

Where: Wells Street [map], Chicago, IL, United States
August 28, 2009 at 1:24 PM | by | Comments (0)

Since we're officially in Indian Summer, with the cool days of late September on our minds and the scorchers of early August already forgotten, we're attempting to spend as many evening as possibly out, dining al fresco. For anyone hitting up Chicago yet this seasons, a perfect area for finding different sidewalk dining every evening is in the Old Town neighborhood, nicely sandwiched between the yuppie cool of Lincoln Park and the grand piano-in-window style of the Gold Coast.

Walk up to here from shopping on Michigan Avenue by going north on State Street, and cutting a left at Goethe or Schiller streets (really, any street named after a dead German poet) for a couple blocks until the fake gaslights and wrought iron gates of Wells Street open up before you. This neighborhood really gets buzzing with liquored-up (yet classy) street fairs several times a summer, and another big one—the Old Town Wine Crush—is coming up on September 12-13; mark your calendars!

The Hotspot 'Hood: Where To Dine And Shop In Chicago's Wicker Park

July 31, 2009 at 2:34 PM | by | Comments (0)

Although everyone knows about Chicago's Michigan Avenue, it's gotten to be a bit like a mall over the last five years. And when you're in town for a visit, why would you want to shop and eat at the exact same places you have in your homtown, albeit a tad larger? So we depart for the neighborhoods of Wicker Park and Bucktown, just west of downtown and as easily accessible by bus, the El or even by car since there is parking available.

Instead of a TGI Fridays and GAP like on Michigan Avenue, out near the intersection of Milwaukee, Damen and North Ave you'll instead find locally-owned boutiques that truly curate their wares and restaurants of the gastropub variety. This is also the area that Marc Jacobs chose for his first Chicago shop, and there's no shortage of lifestyle shops.

So get our your moleskine and jot down a few of our favorite Wicker Park locations, and discover some true local secrets ...

Sun, Sand and Deep-Dish Pizza: Chicago's Top Three Beaches

July 29, 2009 at 2:49 PM | by | Comments (0)

When you think of Chicago, LA-style beach culture isn't usually what comes to mind, but boy oh boy are the Lake Michigan beaches buzzing during the hottest days of summer. And they're true sand beaches even, with volleyball courts, snack stands and families toting mini Weber grills. With the expansive shoreline that Chicago has, it can however be difficult to settle on exactly which beach you'll be wiling away the day. We're going to help you make some decisions with our list of The Top Three Chicago Beaches:

3. Montrose Beach
Skirt the lakefront by driving north on LakeShore Drive to Montrose Harbor, and you'll discover the north side's best sandy secret: a stretch of beach frequented mainly by locals and friendly to dogs. There's easy free parking at the beach and harbor, and it's one of the surest stretches for some secret after-hours skinny dipping.

Chicago's Millennium Park Piles On The Culture With New Pavilions

Where: Millennium Park [map], Chicago, IL, United States
July 28, 2009 at 2:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

Forget the mirror-finish "Cloud Gate" sculpture, otherwise known simply as "The Bean" by Anish Kapoor, Chicago's Millennium Park has blossomed into something even greater than a sanctuary for great architecture and green space—it's become a work of art all it's own.

From all sides, Millennium Park is the place to visit in Chicago; the north holds Frank Gehry's Pritzker Pavilion auditorium and lawn, the south end is the Art Institute with its new Modern wing, the east edge of the park is the lakefront and harbor, and the west edge pulses with Michigan Avenue. Everything within the park continues to grow; from a huge garden of indigenous-to-Illinois plants to the sculptures scattered throughout.

The absolute freshest addition to this garden of al fresco delights, aside from a wading stream, are the two Burnham Pavilions being built to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the city plan. The first (pictured above), designed by Ben van Berkel of UNStudio, has been up for almost a month now and will remain until late October. It's neighbor by architect Zaha Hadid, however, lags severely behind.

Eggs Benedict And Olafur Eliasson At Chicago's MCA

Where: 220 East Chicago Ave [map], Chicago, IL, United States, 60611
July 27, 2009 at 12:19 PM | by | Comments (0)

We luckily escaped New York City this last weekend for Chicago, just missing tornado warnings, hail, and the threat of having to stay inside for two days. Instead, on the lakefront here in Chi-town, we found a paradise of sun, brunch, and modern art. More specifically, we made a bee-line for Sunday brunch on the terrace at the Museum of Contemporary Art, which currently has an exhibition of Olafur Eliasson's works.

Olafur, in case you missed his waterfalls on the East River last summer in NYC, is something of a large-scale, light-and-color genius, and so pairing his 360-degree light room, prism hallway, and misting waterfall with eggs benedict is our highest recommendation for summer brunching in the city.

The exhibit, entitled "Take Your Time," spans fifteen years of Olafur's art, utilizing his architectural, engineering and lighting skills for constructions which, "at once eccentric and highly geometric, use multicolored washes, focused projections of light, mirrors, and natural elements such as water, stone, and moss to shift the viewer's perception of place and self, foregrounding the sensory experience of each work." It'll be on display at the MCA until September 13, and is way better than the waterfalls in our humble opinion.
