Ashley Olsen's Life at Risk During United Airlines Cockpit Fire

May 24, 2010 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (0)

Airplanes make unscheduled emergency landings every now and then, but we usually don’t even mention them since they are somewhat routine. Pilots are professionals who are trained in safety and prepared for all kinds of situations, but a recent incident really caught our attention because it involved both flames and celebrities.

Recently, a United Airlines flight was scheduled from New York to Los Angeles when it was forced to divert to Washington-Dulles due to a cockpit fire.

The flight crew was all over the in-flight fire immediately, using fire extinguishers to get things under control while returning the airplane safely to the ground. The captain actually had to discharge two different fire extinguishers as the fire continued after the first extinguisher was used. We’re really happy that everyone made it home safely, but we’re especially glad that all the celebrity cargo made it back to their mansions as well.

So who's life was at risk?...

Not Fair. Spoiled WAGS Get to Fly First Class on Emirates

April 7, 2010 at 9:05 AM | by | Comment (1)

WAGS--wives and girlfriends of UK football players--have become our newest obsession, largely because we've become bored with antics of trashy Americans. Make a sex tape, apologize, go on a reality show, rinse, lather and repeat. So we look to the WAGS across the pond to fulfill our tabloidy needs. Somehow it's more bearable to follow the travails of people you've never heard of before.

Like Danielle Lloyd. Officially a model and "TV presenter" Lloyd started out as a pageant queen who was crowned Miss Britain in 2006. Later, she was stripped of the title for posing in Playboy and for having an affair with one of the judges, who was a famous footballer. She then appeared on the UK's "Big Brother" where she joined in with Jade Goody on making racist comments to Indian actress Shilpa Shetty. So you know what kind of person we're dealing with here.

Jersey Shore Cast Pulls a 'Robbery' On TSA Checkpoint

January 19, 2010 at 3:45 PM | by | Comments (2)

We fear we could get in trouble with the TSA for that headline above so lest you jump to conclusions, we want to clarify that a "robbery" in Jersey Shore-speak is a term for stealing another dude's girl. Examples: Vinny pulled a robbery on their boss Danny, by hooking up with the girl that Danny had taken out to dinner just hours earlier. Down in Atlantic City, The Situation pulled a robbery on Vinny's girl in the night club.

So robbery is really just a more macho way of saying "sloppy seconds." Except when it applies to airports. Then it means clogging up the security checkpoints and setting off the metal scanners with your Prince Albert piercings. Which is exactly what the Jersey Shore kids did at LAX on Sunday.

Where The Party At? The Top Inaugural Bashes

January 16, 2009 at 4:30 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's no secret that LA and New York are shipping the entirety of their bold-faced names down to Washington for Obamapalooza. But this is also (supposedly) a party for the people. Here's a round-up of the good, the amazing, and the so-amazing-you’ll-never-get-in.

For the people: Tickets are still available (to the tune of $250) to party with Jessica Alba, Samantha Ronson, John Legend and Jamie Foxx at the Declare Yourself “A New Birth of Citizenship” party on Sunday night. On Monday, the Beastie Boys and Sheryl Crow express a sentiment that many of us have been feeling with their Rock the Vote gala “Hey, America Feels Kinda’ Cool Again.” Tickets are sold out, but it’s worth trying your luck on craigslist.

On the big day, you can avoid the masses downtown in favor of the Common Man’s Inaugural Ball at The Wonderland, one of our favorite DC bars.

Potential President Travel: Do Hawaii Like Barack Obama

August 17, 2008 at 3:08 PM | by | Comment (1)

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has been laying low in Hawaii for a couple of days, taking a break from campaigning to soak up the sun and surf of the state where he spent his most formative years. But while the guy clearly has a bit of money and a few connections, his trip has been anything but extravagant. The AP has the lowdown on what the Obama family has been up to on Oahu, and how you too can experience the island like the nominee.

Obama did some bodysurfing in the waves off Sandy Beach Park on the island's south shore, a cheap and fun pastime to be sure. Take care if you try to swim in his footsteps, though: park officials warn that strong currents and dangerous shorebreaks make this a place for "experienced shorebreak bodysurfers" only. In keeping with the water theme, Obama also went snorkeling with his daughters at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, and had a family picnic and swim at Ala Moana Beach Park. Sounds fun to us.

On dry land, the family dropped by Aloha Tropical Farms (we definitely dig macadamia nuts), the Valley of the Temples, and visited his grandfather's grave at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

We could go on, but it sounds like the guy knows how to have a good time, even if the itinerary seems a tad bit over-scheduled. Oh well, I'm sure they found a few moments to chillax amid all the action.

Richie the Friendly Ghost

April 18, 2008 at 12:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

We can barely see Nicole Richie behind the giant white cape she used to shield 3-month-old daughter Harlow on Wednesday at LAX. Mama and baby were there to greet daddy Joel Madden who was returning from his European tour with Good Charlotte.

Seems dad really loves him some baby Harlow, and later that night at a G.C. concert he proclaimed Harlow as "my one and only true love."

Nicole was also there too but got no shoutout. Must have been hiding behind another white cape.

Ok, Seriously: What's Up With Clay Aiken's Feet in Airplanes?

July 11, 2007 at 8:31 AM | by | Comments (3)

Apparently Clay Aiken didn't learn his lesson about keeping his feet (and their smell) to himself after we mentioned it last month. According to People, when Clay was on a Continental flight to Tulsa on Saturday, his foot ended up in a stranger's lap. Ok, hold up here. His FOOT ended up in a stranger's LAP? A head on the shoulder, even a hand on the leg, that we can understand. But a foot on the lap? Are this kid's legs as flexible as his voice?

The best part is that because the woman woke Clay up with a "hit to his chest," the FBI was called in. Apparently, they didn't find any bombs in Clay's foot, so no one was charged with anything. Clay, meanwhile, has promised that he's "taken steps to prevent any foot wandering in the future." Still, we're not going to sit next to him on a plane. Even if he is famous.
