The Flight That Brought a Girl Home to Become Queen Elizabeth II

May 14, 2012 at 12:34 PM | by | Comment (1)

Listen to The Beatles' "Back in the USSR" today, and pay special attention to those first couple lines:

Flew in from Miami Beach. BOAC. Didn't get to bed last night. On the way the paper bag was on my knee. Man, I had a dreadful flight.

BOAC. British Overseas Airways Corporation. This airline still exists today, believe it or not; with rebranding, you'll recognize them as British Airways. BA wasn't just a favorite airline of the Beatles, as you'll see in these photos sent to us by British Airways.

That is Queen Elizabeth II arriving at London-Heathrow on February 7, 1952, the date of the Proclamation of her accession to the throne, following the death of her father, King George VI. She was in Kenya with her husband, beginning a tour that would stretch from Kenya to Australia and New Zealand, when she became Queen overnight, necessitating this BOAC return flight to London.

Enter American Airlines' Contest for First Class Seats and a Taste of Bublé

May 8, 2012 at 9:22 AM | by | Comments (0)

Just a warning before we continue, as you’re going to need to look through the cheesiness if you want to participate in the latest contest from American Airlines. The airline is offering up some swanky flights that will make you feel like a celebrity, and you’ll actually even get to meet one once your VIP experience finally touches down at LAX.

American Airlines is giving you a chance to enjoy their "Five Star Experience," premium service that’s usually only reserved for those with cash to burn. But, if you’re the lucky winner, the one-on-one airport attention will be all yours. You’ll be greeted with car service, a curbside reception, you’ll be escorted to your gate, and of course have access to pretty much any and every Admirals Club lounge on your journey.

The winner will even score his or her very own personal Five Star Service representative, and we wouldn’t be surprised if this also came with a private golf cart trip through the terminal.

Milla Jovovich Pays Tribute to Adam Yauch at LAX

May 7, 2012 at 3:10 PM | by | Comments (0)

Milla Jovovich paid a personal tribute to Adam Yauch at LAX yesterday.

The Resident Evil star sported a faded Beastie Boys t-shirt while boarding a flight out of Los Angeles. Yauch, a member of the Beastie Boys and leader in the cause for Tibetan freedom, died Friday after a three-year battle with salivary gland cancer.

Apparently faded t-shirts are the new favorite fashion for flying celebs. On Sunday, Kristen Stewart was also spotted at the LAX in a worn striped tee as she caught a flight to NYC for tonight's Met Costume Institute Ball.

May 4, 2012 at 12:20 PM | by | Comments (0)

Look what we found! Why, it's a June 1962 edition of United's old in-flight magazine, Mainliner. This week, we'll be flipping through the pages and learning a thing or two about the United of the dawn of the jet age.

Yesteday we introduced you to a Mr. Rotunno, professional photographer with a single beat: Chicago's airports. Rotunno captured the arrivals of famous actors, actresses, political figures, musicians and more with his lens. He was the modern-day LAX paparazzo, just more distinguished and at ORD/MDW.

Today we see a few of the famous faces Mike photographed, featured here on the last page of Mainliner.

Instead of heading off on a romantic honeymoon, Kate and Wills spent the first couple of weeks following their wedding in Anglesey, off of northwest Wales, where William was working as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot at the Royal Air Force Valley base.

Paul Wesley and Joan Rivers Weather an Airplane Lightning Strike

April 17, 2012 at 11:05 AM | by | Comments (0)

Frequent flyers know it isn't unusual for a plane to be struck by lightning, but Vampire Diaries' star Paul Wesley had to learn that lesson the hard way.

On Friday, while en route to an appearance at Toronto Comic Con 2012 with his wife Torrey DeVitto, Wesley realized his plane had been struck by lightning.

"There was a huge burst of light and this loud [sound]," he explained during an interview on Live! With Kelly.

April 11, 2012 at 1:11 PM | by | Comments (0)

Last week, Jimmy Fallon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Simon, and Tina Fey all participated in a fundraiser for the Hole In A Wall Camps, founded by Paul Newman more than 20 years ago.

What started out as one camp, is now the SeriousFun Children’s Network with more than 28 camps and programs around the world. The association's mission is to create a place where kids with serious illnesses and their families only have to focus on having fun.

And, though they might need all of that money raised by celebs, they also need regular people to pitch in and help keep the camps going.

Prince William and Princess Kate Fly...EasyJet?

April 9, 2012 at 11:20 AM | by | Comments (0)

What shows the world that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are just normal people? Flying commercial airlines of course. What makes that statement even bolder? Naturally, flying low-cost carrier EasyJet. Prince William decided to whisk his princess bride off to a ski holiday in the Swiss Alps and the airline just happened to have the perfect route.

The trip was meant to be a romantic week vacation after the Prince was away for Valentine's Day on official Royal Air Force duty, but it wasn't a total couples retreat; they traveled with Kate's parents, who paid for the getaway. It does sound as if someone splurged for the "speedy boarding" option; the royals had a police escort to the empty orange bird in Geneva, Switzerland. After the rest of the passengers boarded the aircraft, most were completely surprised to see the royal couple belted and ready for departure to Manchester, UK.
