Stalking the Empire Asparagus Festival: OMG. ASPARAGUS BEER

May 22, 2012 at 3:44 PM | by | Comment (1)

Here at Jaunted, we spend considerable time and (virtual) ink drooling over weird food festivals. So, this summer, we've decided to visit a few. All this week our Michigan embed Lara Zielin will report back from the Empire Asparagus Festival.

I’ll be honest: If I were going to an asparagus festival and they didn’t have asparagus beer, I’d be pissed. After all, the tangy, bright flavor of asparagus is an ideal complement to beer’s bready body. So good thing Right Brain Brewery agrees with me and stocked Empire, Michigan’s ninth annual Asparagus Festival with an asparagus beer that gives you the best of a good beer without losing the flavor—and flare—of the weekend’s favored vegetable.

Right Brain Brewery’s asparagus ale is light and potable. Maybe even a little too potable, judging from the numbers of people who quaffed a glass (or five) at the festival’s Friday night kickoff, then grooved to the sounds of local musicians, The Benzie Playboyz. The band’s name is possibly awful, but you don't need another pint to appreciate the fact that they have not one but two members who play a washboard. And one of the players is under age twelve.

The Latest News from Delta Will Nurse That Cinco de Mayo Hangover

May 7, 2012 at 8:34 AM | by | Comments (0)

It’s been quite some time since we heard about Delta and their partnership with Avión Tequila, but it sounds like all must be going well as the spirit is headed toward the in-flight beverage cart.

The two companies are hooking up to offer some tasty drinks aboard plenty of Delta flights, and the new beverages made their debut over the weekend. If you flew between JFK and LAX, you may have just been part of a little Cinco de Mayo celebration as flight attendants also passed out some complimentary chips and salsa.

If you’re flying this week however, you'll miss out as it sounds like the planes won’t be loaded up with the new drinks and mixers until later this month. Delta is promising that that the tequila and margaritas will be available on plenty of flights heading around North America, the Caribbean, and Central America for the summer months. We hope they stick around into the fall as well, because we’re pretty sure margaritas are equally tasty no matter what the calendar says.

The Ice King: Richard Branson's Face to Grace Virgin Atlantic Ice Cubes

May 2, 2012 at 8:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

Whoa whoa whoa. Listen to this: Virgin Atlantic just announced that not only have they totally revamped the Upper Class seats and onboard bar, but travelers who belly up to said bar for a nightcap will be greeted by the smiling face of Richard Branson...as an ice cube.

We checked the calendar and it is not April Fool's Day. This is not a drill. Virgin Atlantic is actually going to serve ice cubes made from a mold of Sir Richard's head, sans guillotine. VS explains: "The mould for the ice cubes took a team of four skilled designers a painstaking six weeks to create using detailed photographic techniques and laser scanning technology to create the perfect likeness of Sir Richard."

An Awesome Day on Bali: Sinking to a Cliffside Sunset

April 27, 2012 at 9:51 PM | by | Comments (0)

BALI. For some, the word conjures up images of infinity pools, surfing beaches and tropical temples. For others, it's a nightmare of topless tourists and sweaty sightseeing. Well, we just got back ourselves and we, with the help of tips from friends and locals, did something in between...something that turned out to be awesome. Put on the SPF, hire a car* and join us this week as we reveal an An Awesome Day on Bali (Jaunted-style).

Our awesome day on Bali comes to a close with the sunset. It's not just any sunset, you see; it's a Bali sunset and Bali sunsets are legendary. Therefore, to see a Bali sunset you should have somewhere completely fabulous to sit. We found that place in The Rock Bar at The Ayana Hotel, just south of Jimbaran Bay.

It actually came as a recommendation to us from @Asia_Surf, who's making a nomadic, surf-and-party living on Bali just fine. In other words, he's a reliable source for these things.

Virgin Atlantic's Revamped Upper Class Bar is Crystal-Covered and Pretty Kinky

April 23, 2012 at 4:59 PM | by | Comments (0)

Look at the image above. Now scroll down and look at the image at the very bottom. Now glance back and forth and we dare you to tell us that the new, improved onboard Upper Class bars on Virgin Atlantic aren't crazy awesomer. Yeah, we said "awesomer." Things like this call for words like that.

Let's handle all this goodness bit by bit: yes, Virgin Atlantic has a bar onboard each of their planes. They're only for Upper Class passengers, however, but all the drinks are complimentary and a bartender will shake that Vesper Martini no problem. Yes, the revampment of Upper Class means the bar has been overhauled and now it looks like something torn from a Starship Enterprise-themed kink club or Tron's cut scenes, and we're more than cool with that.

Oh, and there will be Swarovski crystals. *cue the Marvin Gaye*

Where to Drink During the Miami International Boat Show, Starting Today

February 16, 2012 at 3:35 PM | by | Comments (0)

The Miami International Boat Show kicks off today, and you can already tell, from the ghastly traffic. (Hint: take a scooter or a DecoBike—or even, dare we say it, a boat.)

Aside from the opportunity to gawk at power boats, mega-yachts and all the tanned, leathery rich people who own them, the five-day event is a great excuse to drink alongside sailors and said tanned rich people. After all, you never know when you may get an invitation to party on someone's yacht.

Here are our top picks for where to drink during Boat Show weekend:

1. Monty's: This outdoor raw bar with a pool is located at the Miami Beach Marina, making it an awesome year-round choice for tiki-bar drinks and stone crabs. This weekend, it will be a zoo, but in the merriest of ways. Considering the cost of some of the boats docked alongside it, Monty's is refreshingly laidback and often rowdy.

American Airlines Will Be Comping Your In-Flight Booze and WiFi, For Now

January 23, 2012 at 8:43 AM | by | Comments (0)

Those shiny metal airplanes from American Airlines aren’t having the best start to 2012; you know—because of that pesky bankruptcy and the surrounding financial issues. However, American Airlines is still moving full speed ahead as it looks to grab travelers from all over the globe. Their latest move probably costs some money—they’re giving stuff away—but in the end the bean counters must think it’s worth it.

American Airlines is pouring complimentary booze on all of their international flights, and the in-flight party starts on February 1. Passengers sitting in the main cabin—also known as coach—will get beer and wine free of charge on most flights between the United States and Asia, Europe, and parts of South America. Other airlines like Delta already offer a similar service, and of course back in the good ol’ days of air travel this was always the case.

Foreign Grocery Friday: The Ponche Crema of Venezuela

Where: Venezuela
December 23, 2011 at 10:11 AM | by | Comments (0)

When we travel, one of our favorite things to do is to pop into a local grocery store and check out the food products and candies we'd never find anywhere else. So we're trying out this new feature, Foreign Grocery Friday, where each week we'll feature some of our (and your) favorite overseas treats. Got a recommendation? Let us know!

Hope you like rum. Since Venezuela is the producer for some of the world's best rums, it only makes sense that they've have a far better version of egg nog than most of the rest of the world. Their boozy, creamy holiday drink is called the Ponche Crema, and it's not just limited to Venezuela either; this is a drink enjoyed in the southern Caribbean as well, and since so many travelers head to spend Christmas break in the balmy weather, a Ponche Crema or two may be part of the holiday feasting.

Your First and Last Stop in Palm Springs Should Be Pinocchio's

Where: 134 E Tahquitz Canyon Way [map], Palm Springs, CA, United States, 92262
December 19, 2011 at 5:29 PM | by | Comment (1)

Tis the season to head for sunnier, warmer climes. For many this means the Caribbean and Mexico while for others, they're keeping it closer to home in Palm Springs, CA. Since we know many who'll head to the desert on Virgin America's new route to Palm Springs, we're thinking it's time to let you in on a few of our own personal favorite PS secrets.

There's nothing quite like driving into Palm Springs, or flying in for that matter. From every which way, the scenery is beyond stunning. This is truly a desert paradise, and a playground all the same. It's not too difficult to understand the way we feel about the city, if you watch the bodacious Ann-Margret do her thing from 0:55-1:45 in this scene from The Who's Tommy.

"Today it rains champagne," indeed, and nowhere more so than at Pinocchio's, a restaurant in "downtown" PS that specializes in monster brunches washed down with $3.95 bottomless champagne.

Foreign Grocery Friday: The Glögg Mulled Wine of Scandinavia

Where: Sweden
December 16, 2011 at 1:26 PM | by | Comment (1)

When we travel, one of our favorite things to do is to pop into a local grocery store and check out the food products and candies we'd never find anywhere else. So we're trying out this new feature, Foreign Grocery Friday, where each week we'll feature some of our (and your) favorite overseas treats. Got a recommendation? Let us know!

With only so much time left before the holidays, it's now that we get serious about winter treats. Gingerbread houses and candy canes are all well and good, but going farther afield to foreign Christmas traditions yields such yummy drinks as Glögg. This mulled wine is a decidedly Scandinavian tradition, but Iceland and Estonia like to get in on it as well.

Since Glögg is essentially just one version of mulled wine, other country's attempts at the beverage are also totally fine if Glögg isn't available. Germany/Austria/Switzerland's Glühwein is, for instance, an excellent substitute, as is the vin brulé of Northern Italy (especially the ski resort towns). Just be sure to serve it with a bit of gingerbread or a few ginger snap cookies on the side.
