May 28, 2010 at 8:38 AM | by | Comments (0)

There's only so many ugly ties and lame golf-related paraphernalia you can buy dad for Father's Day before it becomes a joke. We don't know about you, but we're always stuck on what to get our pops, since he doesn't really wear ties or golf anyway. But we realized that the perfect gift for any dad is a vacation. Who doesn't like a getting away? This year, treat him to a Guinness...in Dublin.

For our Father's Day travel picks, follow us after the jump.

Uighur Travel: Bermuda Raises Its Profile by Taking In Four Ex-Gitmo Prisoners

Where: Bermuda

First Palau, now Bermuda? Bermuda tourism has been on the decline for several quarters, with visitors passing over the sophisticated Atlantic island in favor of cheaper and glitzier destinations in Florida and the Caribbean, but a surprise deal with the U.S. has given it four new visitors that locals weren't expecting. In a move that has annoyed British authorities to no end, Bermuda agreed to admit four ethnic Uighurs from the U.S.-run Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba. The former inmates were cleared of any wrongdoing years ago, but their status created a political hot potato because officials believed they'd face repression if returned to China, and no U.S. state would agree to accept them.

Bad Fare: Nash's Bridges

May 17, 2006 at 3:13 PM | by | Comments (0)

Jaunted Bad Fare: Nashville-Atlanta, $318 RT on Delta

Since when did flying between Tenessee and Georgia get so expensive? Eastern TN, like Chatanooga, is practically walking distance to Atlanta, but once you get further afield, it all goes out the window.

This fare is also an excellent example of how the hub and spoke system of travel that many airlines are so intent on defending hurts the average traveler. Delta has a huge hub in Atlanta, and these are the kind of fares that you'll get coming from Nashville, if you're lucky. No wonder Delta and AirTran don't get along--AirTran's coming between Delta and huge revenue stream when they underprice Delta out of the ATL.

Rise up! Throw off your shackles of hub-dom! How, we're not sure. But it'll happen, probably around the same time SRO seats come into service.

Bad Fare: Bermuda Shorts Visitors

May 10, 2006 at 2:06 PM | by | Comments (0)

Bad Fare: JFK-Bermuda, $129 OW on jetBlue

This fare is a bit tricky. It's not that the destination, the carrier, or the fare itself are problematic. It's when you're flying: the second half of May. Summertime in Bermuda is toasty indeed, and summertimes starts--you guessed it--right about now.

So this fare isn't about jetting away to Santo Domingo in a it's-so-humid-yet-sexy way, it's more a hot and humid, I can't breathe and don't want to move situation. It's the same as Florida--who's headed to Miami at the beginning of June?

That's why we recommend Montreal this time of year. Forecast for this weekend: Rain with low temps in the upper 40s. At least after that you'll be crying out for Bermuda and will be able to truly appreciate it.
