Now that the election's over, Mom's going to start asking you about your love life again. (Or Dad! We support the right of fathers to ask personal questions, too.) Why don't you start a campaign to get the next person who catches your eye to go out with you? Jaunted hint: Why not take them to Vidalia? You can impress them with your insidery know-how, especially if you're between administrations.
Beacon Bar and Grill: Rooftop martinis? Check. $17 pasta specials? Check. Literate guys? Check. 1615 Rhode Island Ave. NW
Rocketbar: This Penn North sporting bar boasts shuffleboard, pool and darts, but in the sport of conversation, you're on your own. 714 7th St. NW
Apex Nightclub: A gay club established enough to be listed in Fodor's, it varies by the night, so take your chances on Hot Asian Guy. 1415 22nd St. NW

In honor of our Live Arts In Brooklyn series, find a date to see the best of Brooklyn with our hot spots:
The Levee: This dive bar bills itself as an alternative to hipster Williamsburg, so if you're so uncool as to still like Halloween parties (like us!) look no further, 212 Berry St.
Brooklyn Masonic Temple: We weren't able to cover this Ft. Greene concert hall in our round-up, but if you can drop Broken Social Scene lyrics, there's a girl here for you. 317 Clermont Ave.
Kitchen Bar: Looking for an epicurean to watch "Top Chef" with? This place gives new meaning to the word dive bar, and also apparently to "nice conversation." 687 6th Ave.

Apothecary: The Trendiest Cocktail Bar Name on Earth
October 21, 2008 at 10:45 AM | 2 Comments
The word "mixologist" has been around long enough now that even people who say it with a straight face are starting to think it's a little much. (We suggest bringing back "bartender.") But that doesn't mean haughty cocktail lounges are going out of style!
In fact, drinks are getting so complicated that Apothecary is the hottest new bar name, recalling the earliest days of the cocktail when barflies would excuse their excessive boozing by claiming the bitters and tinctures in their brandy worked medical wonders.
From Philly to Adelaide, check out the haughtiest, trendiest bars anywhere with our Apothecary Map.

Drinking Travel: Worldwide Hunt for the Best Bartender
October 15, 2008 at 9:06 AM | 0 Comments
We've never heard a bartender referred to as a "liquid chef" before, but we definitely agree that a good bartender is a very important thing to find when we're on the road. So the Best Bartender in the World contest is one we'll definitely be keeping an eye on.
It's sponsored by alcohol giant Diageo which will test bartenders on speed, accuracy, originality and creativity in their efforts to create the perfect cocktail.
The official World Class website is due to launch later this month before drink-making heats around the globe, finishing up in London with the grand finale in July 2009. By which time the judges will have drunk so many cocktails they probably won't really be up to deciding which one is perfect, we suspect. Can we volunteer our services?

Dive Bar Travel: Boozing with Bourdain in NYC
October 8, 2008 at 3:30 PM | 0 Comments
Global economic collapse only means one important thing to alcohol fiends: Lose the martini lounges; bring back the dive bars.
That's why the New York media world is still mourning the lose of Siberia Bar, the absolutely-no-frills Midtown watering hole where in the old New York, you could sit down for shots with New York Times editors, transvestites and 90-year-old barflies on any given weeknight.
Celeb-chef Anthony Bourdain waxed poetic about Siberia Bar in his poor-chef-in-seedy-Manhattan memoir Kitchen Confidential. Now that the Travel Channel star is back in NYC for the upcoming New York City Wine & Food Festival, the New York Post asked him where he's drinking away his riches these days.

More Post-Ike Travel: Where's The Only Open Bar in Galveston?
September 17, 2008 at 2:15 PM | 0 Comments
As Galveston residents packed to flee last week ahead of Hurricane Ike, a biker bar along the seawall called the Poop Deck boasted it would defy official warnings and not close. We haven't read of its fate yet, but sadly any establishment facing the Gulf of Mexico along Seawall Blvd. probably sustained major damage.
But six blocks away, the party continues at Robert's Lafitte, a gay bar known for its tight door and drag shows. Despite losing all its windows and drawing three feet of water in the storm, Robert's Lafitte re-opened Monday to pass out food and celebrate the career of Tina Turner, gaining converts beyond the usual barflies:

Missed Connections in Montana: John Irving Edition
September 12, 2008 at 12:15 PM | 1 Comment
Before he made his triumphal entrance into the Democratic National Convention, Barack Obama did a tour of Montana. But the city of Missoula got even more attention this week for being the site of a bizarre bear-bike hit-and-run incident.
This story has a happy ending because the bicyclist, middle-school science teacher Jim Litz, was picked up by his wife who happened to drive by the crash site. That's so romantic!
When we get married, we hope our spouses will rescue us from that moment when the bike hits the bear. Find that kind of collaborator at one of our hot spots:

So Tom Brady is done for the season thanks to a torn ACL, and his New England Patriots are trying to regroup. While some will consider this the most epic event in sports since OSU won a national championship in 2002, most of you who care about such things are likely gonna need a drink.
Boston is awash in pro-Pats pubs, but what if you find yourself in enemy territory? Find a friend and drown your sorrows at one of these Boston-loving bars.

To fans of the New England Patriots, a new season means a new chance to go undefeated and make Eli Manning's Boy Scout face go far, far away. For us, it's an opportunity to see if Foxboro retailers' bid to liven up the town around Gillette Stadium actually works.
The regular-season home opener for the Pats is Sunday. Since Patriot Place hasn't opened yet, if you hit our hot spots now maybe you won't need glove warmers--'cause you'll be holding hands with someone who isn't Pat Patriot!

OK, so the romantic weepie starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling was pushed on us when we were terribly ill and couldn't fight back. But even if you believe it's a load of Hollywood hooey, the reunion of the movie's It Couple can make you believe, unlike Gena Rowlands, that love will find you again.
And with the Toronto Film Festival just a few weeks away, don't you want to be seduced in the dark?
