Hair Color Travel: Good Deals for Redheads Down Under

9/30/2008 at 9:30 AM
Tags: , , , (all tags)

We love getting stuff for free, but apparently the red-haired people of Adelaide, South Australia would rather pay to get into the Adelaide Zoo at the moment.

The zoo started a promotion using the Aussie slang term "ranga", a nickname for redheads that derives from the color of the average orangutan. The deal offered free entry to the zoo for all "rangas," but they've toned down the deal now after some complaints.

The good news is that despite the complaints, the zoo decided just to drop the "ranga" title. So red-haired visitors (including those with dyed red hair!) can still get into the zoo for free for the next week. Apparently less than 2 percent of people are redheads but if you're one of them then rush down to Adelaide now. And don't be offended--we're just jealous we can't get in for free.

Fall Culture Travel: Run with the Sheep in Idaho

Last year, no one was nuzzled to death: The Trailing of the Sheep festival in Ketchum and Hailey, Idaho (October 10-12) allow our four-legged woolly friends to walk the streets in honor of the region's long history of sheep herding.

Idaho used to be as well known for its mammal population as the Australian outback, but now towns like Sun Valley are better known for their Polarfleece-clad ski denizens than wool production.

Sing sheep-shearing songs with Wyoming poets and Navajo singers, or prove that your sheep dog is a top herder to win $3,000 on Saturday. We'd recommend the lamb tasting fair, too, but don't take your flock to it.

Animal Travel: Attack of the Sea Eagles

Though the skies are clear and the air mild for tourism in the hills of Scotland this time of year, right now is a lousy time to be a lamb there. Farmers in the Northwest highlands are reporting that 15 whitetail sea eagles, an endangered species, have wreaked havoc on the region, devouring more than 200 of their littlest sheep.

Seattle Airport Is Newly Fond of Farm Animals

9/09/2008 at 10:00 AM
Tags: , , (all tags)

While part of Florida is having serious issues when it comes to goats, Seattle has invited 'em over en masse.

Sea-Tac has contracted a local company called Goat Trimmers to provide about 200 animals to organically trim weeds on airport grounds. Says the outfit's website:

Skip the mowers and get your goat. The scrub grass we loathe is like French fries to billies, so rent a few four-legged lawnmowers for pesticide-free weed-clearing.

There's no word on how long the critters will be grazing at SEA, but it likely won't be for more than a couple days, so get there now if you like your farm animals with heads attached!

Update: LA is also doing this!

Dangerous Travel: Watch for Caimans in Rio

9/04/2008 at 9:15 AM
Tags: , , , (all tags)

Police making what a local newspaper called a "mega-operation" on the Rio favela of Coréia discovered two caimans, which they say drug traffickers used to intimidate enemies--and dispose of bodies. Says one cop:

The caimans are a symbol of power of the traffickers. When they catch a rival, they kill him and give him to the caimans.

The crocodile-like reptiles aren't exactly big, but we still wouldn't want to get near 'em--or the drug lords that put the critters to work. Still, a two-foot-long caiman has got to be less intimidating than a ninja gangster.

Killer Beaches 2008: New Smyrna Still a Shark Paradise

Tags: , , , , , (all tags)

One of our Killer Beaches for two years running, New Smyrna Beach, Florida just counted its 18th shark victim of the year. The 26-year-old surfer was bitten twice on the left leg while sitting on his board, but escaped with "only" a dozen or so gashes that needed stitches.

Earlier this week, a shark nibbled on a swimmer off the coast of New Smyrna, though he too escaped with minor injuries. Still, the beach town is on track to match its annual record of 22 incidents, set in 2001--or what locals call "The Year of the Shark."

Four months to go!

Embedded Travel Guide Cambodia: The Cardamom Mountains

Where: Cambodia

8/25/2008 at 4:00 PM
Tags: , , (all tags)

This week, our Cambodia embed, Tim Patterson, is giving us the inside scoop on the country.

The Cardamom Mountains of Cambodia are perfect habitat for Javan rhinoceroses, Indochinese tigers and Asian elephants. Gibbons sometimes serenade at sunrise and Barking Deer yelp at the edge of the jungle. Siamese crocodiles, once thought extinct, have even been seen in the rivers.

But perhaps the oddest animal of all in this wild bit of Cambodia is the spot-bellied eagle owl. Seriously: It's a real bird! Of course, when I saw one, I didn't take a photo to prove I had.
